  1. ASWhisky scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    definitely nothing to soften
    also nothing instead of liqueur for sweetness
    Moor, wood ash, bitter sweet fruit - all as naked truth
    a very long finish
    3 words: direct, brutal, dry

    1st nose, 2nd mouth, 2nd outlet

    Somehow very special
    • Nose
      moist herbs
      wood smoke
    • Taste
      tingling cough syrup and burnt charcoal
      Pommeranze (bitter orange)
      dark chocolate
      Wood smoke in the throat
    • Finish
      very long
      a lot of wood smoke
      with pomander notes
      the smoke is slightly bitter and burnt
      the sweet slightly sour

      Wood ash with caramel sweetness

    While he was still very sparing with the smoke in his nose, he shows clearly smoky notes on the tongue and in the finish. Coherent in itself, but the special kick is missing - and it also shows some youth.
    Branches, grass clippings.
    • Nose
      85 85
      Greets the nose with delicate smoke, herbs and raisins. At first, it still seems cautious. Slightly damp forest floor. The smoke note is now more intense, campfire smoke with peat and dry branches. Green branches, cut grass.
    • Taste
      86 86
      Mild onset, dry, much smokier than on the nose. Tart herbs, dark chocolate, espresso beans. Lemon juice. Wild berries, blackberries, but not very pronounced. Overall, rather sterile. Burnt caramel.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Long, smoky finish. Tart herbs, pine needles, forest floor, moist cardboard, green branches.

  3. Calmar scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

    Very pleasant, not rich in the number of derivatives, but very well balanced, precisely calibrated whisky, aristocratic.
    • Nose
      Open, dry, noble wood, dry boards, peat, light smoke, sweet coal notes, strange as it may sound, some dry herbs, light coniferous tones, cedar wood.
    • Taste
      Saturated, dense, smoky-woody notes, black pepper, sweetness mixed with bitterness, as if eating caramel half-burnt to coal, light creamy notes - toffee, boiled condensed milk.
    • Finish
      Spicy, warming, burnt cedar planks, needles, peat, creamy sweetness.

    [September, 2014]  I had this dram during an Ardbeg-Masterclass tasting at Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5.  My notes state a soft and smooth profile that is not Ardbeggish at all.  Nevertheless complex and easy-to-sip...

    Very green ardbeg

    Following on from the Ardbog, I’ve also tried this once before in the same place, back in 2015 - almost definitely the same bottle.

    N&T: A much cleaner experience than the Ardbog with its straight-ahead bourbon cask-delivered oily vegetal bright waxiness.
    F: Not a complex number but one that delivers well with plenty of chew on its fine distillate-led bourbon-aged barley juice.
    C: The yeasty bourbon youthful resinousness got a bit grating, but overall I liked this a lot. I think it’s aged well in the open bottle.

    Certainly a good Islay Malt .... but .... for that price ....
    I find that a bit overdrawn!
    [Color] honey;
    • Nose
      light citrus fruit, malt, sweetness, wood smoke, ash, salt;
    • Taste
      full of appetite, sweetness, honey, yellow fruit (peach?), malt, smoke, ash, salt, anise, oily, pepper (maybe ginger), unbalanced, young;
    • Finish
      medium-length, sourish finish; slightly bitter, alcoholic pungency;
