A playful and lively dram, reminds me why I love older Highland Parks!
    • Nose
      88 88
Luscious sweet aromatic peat smoke, we're talking Highland Park! Some vanilla, honey and a bit of mint.
    • Taste
      90 90
Richer and thick on the palate. Medium aromatic peat smoke, with orange marmelade, chocolate and passion fruits. Becomes more oily and spicy after a while.
    • Finish
      89 89
The oiliness continues, now with a drier kind of peat. Tends towards an oaky spiciness before the sweet passion fruits and chocolate take over again.

such variation among reviewers..! and within my own nosing and tasting experience with just a 3 cl small sample, too.

it began with a slight disappointing first contact echoed by hs305’s review.. but then it slowly picked up speed along the way.. it started with a notably deep and long, vibrant finish.. then the taste became classier and more complex.. with violet notes, honey and slightly bitter smoke.. and in the end a very inviting, heathery nose.. i simply cannot understand the comparison with the 18.. it is a much more potent and expressive spirit.. then the dryness in the finish grows stronger and the bitter in the taste more unnerving.. the fruits are slowly dying.. it lives, it grows then and it dies in the glass.. how should one score a life? which mark should count more.. that of the feeble beginnings.. the glorious mid-years or the decrepit end? how about no score at all?

occasionally it flickers back to greatness..

Not sure everyone is speaking of the same bottling (this one came to UK airports back in the end of 2007, got mine in Jan 2008).

A stellar HP, tastes older than the age statement says? Oh well. All of that heather-honey, spicy oak, citrus, dark fruits, dry finish..Superb. So soft, so well balanced. The oak in the end hints at age (more than 21?). This is a solid, respectable and old-fashioned dram to sip slowly in the evening.

It's been a while: I don't remember trying HP 21 since Jan 2013, and that was at a whisky fair, where one friend had filled his glass with the 18yo and another with the 21yo, and together we 3 preferred the 18yo. Have things changed? YES.
I find the nose with its raspberry jam after some time in an oven to be delightful. Sweet and tastefully sherried, elegant and soft without being toothless. The body is plain joy on the tongue, and the taste and the waxy, sherried finish leave me wanting for more. I tried it with some water, but it didn't seem to work as well as without.

  16. Snerik scored this whisky 87 points Expert Junior

It's a (dried) fruit bomb with less smoke and punch than the 18yo. And it's enjoyable!
    • Nose
Loads of fried fruit; mango, papaya, peaches. Spices, like clove, lemon zest and cumin. It's less smokey than the 18yo, although there's a peated note. And leather, yes.
    • Taste
Lovely, more minerals, more smoke, and more lemon and less dried fruit.
    • Finish
Long. Again, more smoke and lemon than the nose. But the dried fruit comes again, with notes of cacao and leather.

  17. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Was a positive surprise for me, too bad he ran out. Acts very mature and yet crisp for his age, goes exactly in my direction.
    • Nose
Nice crunchy, nuts, bitter orange, grapefruit, burned butter, leather, pipe tobacco, books, nutmeg, herbal honey, heath meadow, marzipan
    • Taste
Interesting sherry-bourbon mixture, cherries, lavender, very full, orange peel, tangerines, fennel, heather, cocoa, then take out tannins and some salt at the back, slightly roasted malt, some tobacco, herbal honey, nutmeg, ginger
    • Finish
Dry, salt, malt, ginger, nutmeg, bitter orange, medium to long

  18. Calmar scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Very nice mole, restrained-noble, rich, well-balanced, deep enough and complex.
    • Nose
Open, dry, smoke-peaty notes in the frame of soft sherry, burned pine branches, lapsang suhong, old furniture, furniture varnish, prunes, fried nuts, lemon zest, new leather goods, polish, dry herbs, honey.
    • Taste
Saturated, oily, there is more sherry, smoke-peaty in the background, raisins, prunes, creamy confectionery notes, dry grasses.
    • Finish
Soft, spicy, sour prunes, a little sulfur shades - burnt matchheads, metallic sour, cola, a little ash and peat in the background

    Enthusiasm: Nose 3/5 Mouth 4/5 Final 2/5 Whisky n ° 1698
    • Nose
Sweet and discreet, slightly fruity. Barely peated.
    • Taste
Well fruity and spicy, there is pep and relief.
    • Finish
Unlike the mouth, the finish is rather flat and watery, what a pity!

  20. PatSch23_12 scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

A wonderful standard. A pity that he will not exist anymore.
    • Nose
very dense, eucalyptus, clearly flowery and fruity (pear, grapefruit, orange), ginger, smoldering hay with herbs (Highland Park smoke, wonderfully integrated), spicy-sweet honey, marzipan, salty caramel
    • Taste
oily, creamy, dry herbal smoke with light chocolate, orange and pear skin, spicy pepper and intense herbs (rosemary and thyme)
    • Finish
      Very dark, warm and long

  21. hs305 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

[March, 2018] Quite a while ago I did my last head-to-head tasting so I lust after another one, this time it is this 21-years old HP versus the 25-years old HP (WB id 79566) both from very recent batches. To verify the results I repeated this tasting some days later.

Oops, this was unexpected. The usually very consistently great 20+years bottlings of Highland Park seem to have degraded substantially. This rather light texture/oiliness cannot match the big mouthfeel and finish of older HP drams (did they hurry the distillation too much?). Both the nose and taste are way simplier than previous batches and somewhat unbalanced with too much wood influence and missing many delicate fruity and peaty aromas of older HP's (according to my taste buds, maybe others see this different).

To be honest, I would rather buy older batches at auctions than these new editions - even if the older design is not that fancy...

[July, 2021] I re-tasted this dram tonight and I am even a little more disappointed than with the first time. Tonight I score this dram two points less at 85 because of a bitter-astringent mouthfeel / finish and a simple, unimpressive taste which is mainly wood-driven. As I drinker I am not willing to spend more than 50 Eurobucks on a bottle of such average quality only, but why should I buy such a bottle at all?
    • Nose
      88 88
The colour of the 21y is burnished and the 25y is two shades paler at deep copper. The texture of the 21y shows small tears with medium fast legs while the 25y has bigger and more sticky tears with medium fast legs. Not really a good oiliness on both drams, unfortunately. The 21y offers a nice nosing profile of mainly autumn floral, herbal and spicy wooden aromas that is balanced but not overly complex. Some barley sugary sweet aromas pop up after a while. The nose of the 25y is more complex as it adds fruity and heather honey aromas to the party. Clearly I prefer the 25y on this dimension but to be honest: I had much better HP noses in the past...
    • Taste
      86 86
The taste of the 21y is very wood driven with spices and herbs in a rather bitter setting. This is too unbalanced for me as the sweet and fruity flavours hide in the background and are hard to detect. The 25y is better on this dimension but again without being truly great (like older batches). Still this is a fine and complex taste with lots of different flavours, for sure. But I cannot score this above 90 points as this would be unfair to many other fine drams. Some water opens up both the nose and taste of the 21y nicely (a two points difference in my score) but it is not recommended with the 25y as this dram flattens out quickly when reduced by water.
    • Finish
      87 87
The 21y arrives warming and (just a little) coating on the palate with significant astringent moments from heavy tannins and a slight bitterness. This is not my favourite mouthfeel, unfortunately. Luckily the mouthfeel of the 25y is better but still it is not really coating (I expected this from the rather weak oiliness already). At least there are no astringent or unpleasant bitter moments. But where is the trademark great mouthfeel of HP gone these days? The finish of the 21y adds some sweet flavours (sugars) during the medium finish that are highly welcomed because they at least somewhat balance out the drying bitterness. The finish of the 25y is just of a medium length too (the light texture takes its toll) and it dries out at the end (cold ashes, papers).

This is the result of an HP tasting yesterday:-

    1st -highland-park-30-year-old 48.1%

    2nd - highland-park-30-year-old 45.7%

    3rd highland-park-25-year-old 48.1%

    4th - highland-park-25-year-old 45.7%

    5th - highland-park-18-year-old 43%

    6th - highland-park-21-year-old 47.5%

The 30 year 48.1% is the best but there is little between the 25 year and 30 year offerings.   The 18 year is good and better value than the 21 year.

I have reviewed this before but this is a different batch.

Its nice enough but in a straight comparison I prefer the 18 year.

This is more complex and has more power than the 18 but I just prefer the simplicity of the 18.

A very fine Highland park, and the youngest of those I really like. Of course, the 25s and 30s are miles away and much more intense, but this 21er is the first big throw in the standard range. First-class harmonious, very elegant, the HP style, which is mainly based on the axis heather honey orange chocolate, is here in great balance and down to the smallest detail as you love HP: fine flavors, not too much barrel influence, Fruit, sweetness and the just right touch of spices make for a completely successful Malt - schöön! Too bad that this standard has now been (re-) listed.
    • Nose
Orange blossoms, clover blossoms, lilacs, the HP-typical light heather, acacia honey, nasturtium, dried spicy papaya seeds, oranges, dark and also milk chocolate, sweet pipe tobacco, vanilla, nutmeg, bookstore (very new and very old books), light smoke, Nut cake, marzipan, very light mint, Toblerone
    • Taste
oily-sweet, creamy, viscous, orange and tangerine, intense and sweet exploding, over it dissolving dark chocolate, also milk chocolate, orange blossom tea, lime blossom tea, orange pekoe tea, acacia honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, nasturtium, baked apple, papaya, candied Oranges, nut cake, a touch of sweet tobacco, Amaretto, mild smoke - nice warm mouthfeel, everything very harmonious - towards the end the barrel flavors are getting more and more beautiful, really great everything
    • Finish
long, honey, tangerines, chocolate, honey, vanilla, marzipan, the chocolate dresses the entire mouth, very lightly at the end mint and cucumber and anise ... and again honey and orange blossom ... wonderful!

Immediately likeable with dense layers of aroma to attempt to discern. Sweet honey, toffee dark ripe fruits come out to play right away. In support there are nutty malts, leather, polish, heather and dusty smoke. Hiding away is a real umami flavour - balsamic vinegar maybe? along with sharp burnt orange and subtle wood spicing, particularly ginger and nutmeg. There's an awful lot going on.

I couldn't really find in this the virtues so obvious in the OB 18: it is quite round and benefits really from the higher strength but dryish, somewhat bitter and lacking in depth. I really like Highland Parks (though their recent pricing policies and new series are alarming indeed) and this is also why I expect a bit more...

I really like the Highland Park 21 better than the 18-year-old. The sweet, creamy and incredibly pleasant mouthfeel is a highlight. One wishes, the feeling would never pass away. The alcohol level of 47.5% fits perfectly, the newer, weaker version does not really convince. Unfortunately, just under 200 EUR are already a hefty price for this whisky ...
    • Nose
Tender smoke, burning herbs, a bit of salt and a delicate mineral note first come into the nose. Immediately followed by wild honey, limes, eucalyptus, almonds, marzipan and some sherry. Everything is here, what makes Highland Park good and lovable! Overall for 21 years pretty fresh and lively.
    • Taste
Now the whisky shows its age and reveals a downright consistency in the mouth. Wonderfully thick, oily and sweet. White chocolate, roasted almonds, orange marmalade and distinct herbal notes and intense spiciness. The creamy mouthfeel does not stop at all.
    • Finish
The medium-long finish is carried by marzipan, almond syrup, white chocolate and the typical, slightly herbaceous, smoke of Highland Park. Later, caramel and vanilla strengthen. Also on the finish is the still existing creamy and soft sweetness.

As soon as i tasted this i thought it was great. My first impression palate wise though was that it was a little thin but, i was comparing that to the 30yr which coats your tongue more. I found the alcoholic strength just right at 47.5% and wonder how reducing it to 40% has affected later bottlings, taste wise. All in all a fine HP and worth the outlay imho.

Drawing its incredible character from predominantly American oak casks which have been seasoned with sherry, our 21 year old is a truly dynamic whisky, with an intensely fruity and spicy centre, surrounded by complex layers of candied orange peel, dark chocolate and rich, slightly drier smoke. It is a malt whisky that rewards patience and delivers an experience like no other.

N: Oily and woody with the smell of distant cow pats wafting gently on the light warm summer breeze. Some cleaning detergent here, bleach maybe, creasote and a touch of salt. The nose is like watching a fish tank - consistent vista but with small and fascinating movements from time to time, a moving picture on the nose, fantastic.
T: Sweet, thick, woody arrival… stays bold…. then becomes more creamy, woody and then smoky, oily, a touch of brine and big vanilla notes.
F: And theres more - more oil with wood spices building [pepper and wood], sweeter caramel/toffee creams.  Now concluding itself as a creamy, malty, caramel finisher with smoke appearing with water.
C: A nose to spend time with and a long long development. After a long journey its a pleasant simple finisher. A better finish would make this HP a sensational malt.

    Scores a B+

I prefer it to the 18 in many ways and had a chance to compare the HP18 straight after:
HP18 - N: New make spirit! - Bananas and pear drops, a touch of sherry wood - so young compared its older brother, Oily, briny peat but over shadowed by the remnants of the HP21.  T: Weak arrival - gentle sweet wood spices which then flattens out further.  F:Woody vanillas and citrus.  C: Amazing to compare the 18 and 21 so directly. The 18 here comes across as sweet and tasty but a non-event in comparison to the 21yo.

    [TWE Show sample Oct ’14]

N: Delicious bourbon and sherry combo with vanilla, salt and grit - good stuff

T: Thick, malty sweet and salty but its a mild mouthful

    F: Milky sweet

    C: Another good HP batch

Blind tasting of a sample. I had not recognised this one as a Highland park, I miss the typical notes I associate with HP (ash, vanilla, caramel). Believe it or not, but I slightly prefer the 18 YO over this one.
    • Nose
Light and fruity with apple, raspberry, peach, marzipan and a whiff of eucalyptus.
    • Taste
Apple, orange, almonds, plums, honey and eucalyptus. Then a very clear
spiciness with a lot of black pepper, cinnamon and cloves breaks through.
    • Finish
Red apple, cloves, peach, plums, pepper and cereals.

Very sherry nose, but also with a marine / iodine touch. A lot of pepper on the finish.

It's very good, but far too expensive for what it is!

(Tasted in the living room, so not in the most optimal conditions)

Excellent HP. Around 115 EUR, which I will gladly fork
    over in in this case.
    • Nose
The nose is a bit aloof and somewhat sweet on all
kinds of fruits. Pears, banana, cherries and gooseberries. Loads of heather and
hay. Roasted almonds and sultanas. Apfelstrudel. Slightly floral, but very,
      very nice indeed.
    • Taste
Sturdy and oily on the palate, which took me a bit by
surprise after the soft nose. Citrus fruit, from lime to bergamot. Walnuts,
heather and honey. The peat gives it a smoky edge. Very tasty. Ginger is the
leading spice. Honey comes to the fore. Gains power.
    • Finish
The finish is long and warm and fades beautifully.

N: fudge, orange, white pepper, kiwi, iron and oily
T: full and complex taste with wood, spices, some peat and fruity - apple
F: spices, vanilla, sweet peat smoke, some ashes, later pepper, orange and fudge

The balance of this HP is superb, beautiful balance of aromas and a worthy representative of this distillery, includes all the characteristics of this one.
    • Nose
Complex and elegant nose. Attack on the fine peat, not medicinal, no fire of wood but a beautiful peat of heather of the orcades, very vegetable. This peat is mixed with marine notes on iodine, honey and some notes of discrete sherry, rather on dried fruits and orange.
    • Taste
The attack is done gently, the 47.5% are perfect for this HP. We find this beautiful peat of heather, iodine, honey and orange. The mouth evolves towards spices and chocolate.
    • Finish
Long enough finish on iodine, spices and honey.

Aromas of candied orange peel and spicy dark chocolate.
On the nose, he has beautiful,

spicy sweet aromas with a hint of orange peel and dark chocolate. The finish is long and

beautiful, with complex, not too heavy, smoky tones of orange and dark chocolate

As far as I have heard this one was bottled a few months ago (2012), available in the UK.
    • Nose
Mellow, sweet and very fruity at first nosing with lots of oranges. In additon I smell honey, caramel and hints of sherry. Quite nice and pleasant.
    • Taste
Smooth, surprisingly light and dry at first mouthfeel. White pepper, black tea and smoke with weak notes of sherry, caramel and liquorice. The fruityness and oranges have disappeared. Pleasant although the nose promised a little bit more.
    • Finish
Medium long remaining relatively dry, even a little dusty.

very good whisky, great upgrade from the 18.
    • Nose
great deal of (dark) chocolate. Fudge as well. Rather sweet with nice heather on the background. More pepper after a little rest.
    • Taste
notes of toffee and roasted hazelnuts. Again, a lot of chocolate on the palate. With more honey and heather on the background. Evolving to warm spices like paprika, pepper and clove.
    • Finish
long oaky finish with a lingering taste of chocolate till the very last bit.

Had the chance to try this today, fantastic! Went to let the owner of

this liquor store try the Balvenie tun 1401 #3 and he pulled this out.

He said it was given him to try from a friend from Scotland. I Liked it

and haven`t tried any of these before, well done!

According to Matestium, this is no longer for duty free, rather a new standard 21yo

  70. Dede scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A very round HP nose and mouth. It is unfortunate that it stiffens well in the final but make no mistake: it remains an excellent whisky.
    • Nose
The nose is very sweet, with a lot of honey. It is a fruit salad, with yellow fruits, orange quarters sprinkled with cinnamon, some floral notes (orange blossom). A discreet smoke frames the fruits. The whole shows a nice balance and a great elegance. The aeration makes it more greedy, mixing with honey notes of dried fruits reminiscent of oriental pastries (baklava).
    • Taste
No aggression at 47.5 degrees. The attack is all round, we find the honey found in the nose. On the other hand, the fruity is very attenuated in favor of the orange blossom, in spite of the acidic reminiscence of the orange quarters. The mid-palate is more spicy, peppered, even if one is far from the ardor of a Talisker.
    • Finish
Long enough, it is dry and more tannic than the mouth. Wood speaks here and dominates the debate to the detriment of the other components.

  71. CrilleVBG scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

This is a very good whisky. Very smooth for it's 47,5%.
    • Nose
Powerful, so many aromas, fudge, oak, grass, pepper and marmalade.
    • Taste
Smooth, nice oaky flavor. And a interesting lime taste is there as well.
    • Finish
      Long peppery finish.
