    Next up, an old ‘Jewel’ from the Old Man’s treasury.

    N: With a luring murky sweetness overall, we’ve any number of waxy dusty garage notes and condensed fruits. I have less time than this one deserves but can’t wait to try it.
    T: A sublimely concentrated fruit hit, sweet, soft, condensed and oaky with a herbal/spearmint chewing gum note [only hinting at medicinal].
    F: Surprisingly big on vanilla [though nothing like today’s bourbon monsters], before Springbank’s signatory ashiness and sugar barley finish. It lifts off thereafter.
    C: A classic Springbank. Not dissimilar to contemporary releases but those years have been very kind. A jewel indeed!

    Excellent whisky, complex, complex, very deep and rich, not static, constantly changing in a kaleidoscope of shades and tones, berry and mineral, salty and sweet, industrial and pastry, perfectly balanced, amazingly strong.
    • Nose
      Restrained, moist, first nose - oak and vanilla; dry boards, mineral notes - wet stones, stone dust; wool, animal tones, lemon peel, orange peels, vanilla, sweet pastry shades - cakes with jam, fruit pastille; crushed berries - strawberries, red currants; herbarium, burning leaves.
    • Taste
      Thick, saturated, tart oak, sweet fruity notes, marmalade with sourness, jam, some bitter berries - viburnum, mountain ash; young bark, astringent mineral-industrial tones, machine oil, pastry shades.
    • Finish
      Spicy, slightly astringent, invigorating, young bark, oak, berry notes - red currant, mountain ash, black tea, lemon peel.

    This was followed by a stellar Bache-Gabrielsen 1971-2016 vintage Cognac served by WhiskyLovingPianist (thanks !!), which actually served as a nice transition since this one has definitely a Cognac element in the finish, in my opinion.

    What a great day it was in any case !

    [Tasting session - n°5 - quick note] This just crushed any contender that we had in the line up so far. An instant benchmark.
    • Nose
      93 93
      Superbly soft and fruity, with a sublime polished quality, this has some fragrant leather, various creams, apricots, pomgrenate, raspberry. Magnificient. Later on, goes on dark grapes and violets. How refined !
    • Taste
      93 93
      Magnificient, the wax makes a splendid appearance delivering a ton of melting Yankee Candles (the whole range) with various flowers, dark grapes again, green melon, sublime balance and texture.
    • Finish
      92 92
      Superb prolongation on Cognac and pink toothpaste for kids (Theramed anyone ?).

      Very loud and fresh sherry, ice cream, dates and red fruits.
    • Taste
      A lot of dates and Christmas cake, hard candy, mints and crushed red fruits, fruit cake, then some bitter oak
    • Finish
      Long, very bitter, Christmas cake

    Tasted with Aby and JJ.
    • Nose
      Wax, smoke and dusty. Fruity - exotic fruits, herbs and some peat.
    • Taste
      Peat, wax, citrus - lemon and a some smoke.
    • Finish
      Fruity and coastal.

    Fabulous nose and gentle palate, but it fades a bit after that.
    • Nose
      Stewed fruit compote, rhubarb, strawberry jam, almond nuttiness and gentle smoke.
    • Taste
      Strawberry jam with lashings of sugar, cinammon, cloves. Some wood, but surprisingly fresh.
    • Finish
      Masses of spice generates a bit of heat, but its not very long.
