Interesting and, if you give it time, also complex.
I would not have come across the influence of the wine barrel blindly, but if you know it, you can feel it. But nicely integrated and delicious.
Only the slightly alcoholic taste (perhaps 50% would have been better) plus the cheesy initial smell prevent a rating of 90+.
He doesn't need much water, but becomes a little less alcoholic.
    • Nose
      87 87
Caramelized and honey-coated fermented fruit, tends towards the love apple, i.e. apple coated with candis. There is also a slight smell of alcohol and glue and a musty or cheesy smell in the background. Over time, however, the latter gives way and walnut and cherry notes as well as mahogany nuances are added. Followed by grapefruit, orange, bitter almond and a little cinnamon.
So quite a complex nose that also takes time.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet, but also with an alcoholic tingling that gets stronger. The sweetness is increasing and moving towards the sweet acacia honey. Plus orange, cinnamon and cedar wood.
    • Finish
      89 89
Nice combination of dryness and sweetness, with sweetness dominating. I like it so much. Nice interplay between the orange and the grapefruit.

    • Nose
Honey, caramel, roasted almonds, dried herbs, grass, a little cinnamon
    • Taste
Honey, cereals, caramel, very light apricots, some coffee, grapefruit, ash ... uh, where does that come from, must have been a really badly charred barrel
Ha in the 5th sip there is still some of the green bell pepper

soft, fruity, subtle sherry (apparently due to the wine), real vanilla, not so sweet, slightly bread-like
    • Taste

fruity, tastes of a slight sherry influence, slightly bread-like, gentle
    • Finish

Jura; one of the distilleries of which I have tasted not a lot of expressions, as far as I can remember. I would not be surprised if it will stay like that.
    • Nose
      84 84
Pretty shy on the nose. In the initial minutes I cannot recognize any real flavors. After some time, fruity notes rise up from the glass. But still not outspoken. I really do not have the idea I am dealing with an Island whisky.
    • Taste
      85 85
Also the taste is not very outspoken; but it's better than the nose. Spices are dominant, hints of citrus and a tad sour. But there is nowhere an explosion.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long finish where the flavors as described in the taste come back.

Had this one in a blind tasting. Funny to see that, not being a particular fan of Jura, my opinion about this distillery was confirmed without knowing it.
I really had troubles with defining specific scents and flavors for this one. Some ripe fruits, some spices, a bit of sour edge. Not very powerful.
It's all not that bad, but I guess just not my cup of tea.
    • Nose
      83 83
Fruity, ripe fruits, later on more alcohol, and something vegetal, 'green'.
    • Taste
      83 83
Now some power, pepper, fruity, a bit spicy, some hints of chocolate, a bit sour.
    • Finish
      82 82
Still pretty strong, fruity, drying mouthfeel. Some honey, somewhat sour. Not very long, a bit of tobacco as well.

    • Nose
      88 88
Mild and sweet sherry like fruit notes. Cherries, apricot, sultana's, some leather and nuttiness, toffee and cocoa butter.
    • Taste
      86 86
Quite creamy. More or less similar to the nose, but it's actually way drier and more leathery and spicy then I expected.
    • Finish
      85 85
Some fruit, quickly turning pretty tannic and dry with spicy leathery notes.

Part of the HWF second edition line up! This one was third. Nobody got close to guessing the right distillery despite of the fact that several typical flavors of this distillery were being described such as lactic acid and baby puke. Anyhow Jura is a distillery you love or find despicable. Since I’ve been there and was able to blend in with the small community on this also small island for a couple of days, I’m a little prejudiced I guess. As I said before in previous Jura reviews, this is one of those examples of ‘having been there will add to the appreciation of the whisky’.
    • Nose
At the start there is indeed that typical lactic asic, baby puke kind of smell. But this evaporates quite fast. After it did a very sweet but also fresh nose appears. It gives a lot of bourbon-like flavors in an amount that, when tasted blindly, one could almost think about a bourbon or Virgin oak maturation. But for me, the fresh/sour layer gives away it isn’t that. It just needs a little air time. I get those with oranges stuffed chocolates, cocoa and hints of leather. Also quite some vanilla and other Virgin oak kind of flavors. I guess this one was matured on an very active ex bourbon cask, before being finished in another type of cask.
    • Taste
Soft, creamy and a wee sour freshness. Initially you get quite a bourbon-like mouthfeel with a big load of oak influences. But also there is a freshness I can’t describe very accurate. It does remind me of those more dry/sour white grapes. Also some leather is on the palate. There is loads of caramel in the taste. Something that is quite recognizable for Jura. I definitely like this style of Jura. There is an extra in it without being dominant. I would have never guessed it being a sparkling wine cask finish but I do like the flavors this cask adds to the whisky.
    • Finish
In the finish some off notes are there. There is some sort of faint caramel note here. Fresh Mint leafs and something like anise. The finish is not bad but it isn’t outspokenly pleasant neither.

Approval for Lukas_Kiene: The aroma is like a freshly opened bag of Haribo Pico-Balla. In my opinion, this effect is due to the fact that the aroma of the colorful fruit basket is overlaid by a slightly perfumed, superimposed character - but only very slightly! Very interesting.

Strong Jurassic! Very diverse and with extraordinary and delicious flavors.

    A very interesting change!
    • Nose
      88 88
First impression: a freshly opened bag of Haribo! (Maybe the Colorado Mix?)

This is followed by a lot of chocolate and marzipan. In addition, cocoa beans, marble cake batter with rum, refreshment sticks (the chocolate-coated sticks with liquid peach or orange filling), sweet nut notes, chocolate and raspberry tartlets and a little sweet lemonade.

The whole thing looks a bit fake, but is extremely tasty. Like in a candy factory or pastry shop.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very tingling and slightly spicy, again a lot of chocolate, cocoa, sweet and tart nut notes, fresh citrus notes and sweet fruits in the background.

Then comes some marzipan again, or a sweetish almond or nutty note. Also a bit bitter coffee.

The taste of the sweet confectioner's notes clearly merges into a much more tart and woody note.

      Very exciting experience.
    • Finish
      87 87
Pleasantly tart, delicate tart wood, some chocolate.

Tender fruits and the bitter wood notes remain.

      Quite a long finish overall.

The alcohol is very well integrated here. The whisky is sweet and spicy, slightly exotic and extremely complex. My ideas about the sparkling wine barrels were somehow different .......... but still a great piece!
    • Nose
Sweet on the nose with lots of flowery honey and syrup. Spicy herbs spread and meet nutty aromas of marzipan. The malt also has something dark berry about it, which looks slightly sour. Fruity citrus aromas meet exotic physalis, apricot and ginger.
    • Taste
White again in the mouth, slightly with floral honey, here is a little vanilla. Spicy old wood with deep nut aromas has a somewhat astringent effect, before fruity citrus aromas and orange peel are added. A little sweet apple and crunchy pear are also included.
    • Finish
The finish is sweet with a lot of blossom honey, spicy heat on the palate and slightly sour dark berries.

    it takes time
this is not an entry-level law; the cheese note discourages
if this is the first law, then it is also the last one to drink
    • Nose
Oak, cheese decreases, a strange note also decreases, light glue, dark, leather, Christmas cookies, red berries / fruits
      with water: more cheese again
    • Taste
      oily, soft on the palate
Leather, light cheese, oak, wild berries
with water: lots of oak, chocolate around 75%, tart berries towards currant
    • Finish
      Oak, herbs, tart becomes stronger
with water: currant, bitter, tannins, tart herbs increase and other red berries become stronger

    - a top painting from the island of Jura
    - very convincing
    - very successful annual special edition
    - one of the best TASTIVAL bottlings
    • Nose
very intense sweet smell of grapes dark chocolate, strong and strong (but not alcoholic!), no smoke or spice
    • Taste
slight burning sensation on the lip, velvety approach, lots of fruit (grapes, plum, sweet) and chocolate, all very surprising for the wine barrel
    • Finish
      very soft medium length finish;
medium-long harmonious fruity aftertaste with lots of fruit aromas

A very intensive, vinous, strong Jura - a wonderful wine barrel maturation - a Top Malt!
And anyway: finally not dyed, not cool filtered and filled with massive 52.0%, how cool is that?
    [Color] copper;
    • Nose
      intense grapes, dark chocolate, strong, sweet;
    • Taste
      velvety soft onset, powerful, juicy fruits, old wine, chocolate, spice, mouth-filling, complex;
    • Finish
      soft, warm, medium length finish; Appearance: long, chocolate, coffee;

I've never been a huge fan of Jura, but it all changed when I visited the distillery at the Feis Ile 2015. The people are just lovely and I adored the Tastival when I first had it there. It's my favorite Jura until now alongside the 1982/2014 we sampled there. Unchillfiltered, uncolored and >40% ABV Jura can be great.

I also like that they release a rather big batch of this every time, so this stuff is actually drunk and not constantly flipped. Given the ABV and age I think the price (around £ 65 if I remember correctly) was more than fair too.
    • Nose
      Leather, raisins, milk chocolate, fudge
    • Taste
Citrus, milk chocolate, all kinds of berries, with a salty/coastal side to it. There's no real obvious 'sparkling wine' influence to this but the whole is very fruity. The mouthfeel is nice and fat at 52%.
    • Finish
Blackberries, more citrus, a rather drying but pleasant finish at medium length.

[June, 2015]  I had this dram during a "Feis Ile 2015" tasting at Bonn.In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5. I took no detailed notes.

    n:dry sherry ,subtle sea breeza
m:toffish, raisins, black overripe cherries, beef and herbs bouillon cubes, but the whole profile is a bit refined maybe due to the sparkling wine casks and balance is achieved
f:average on the same notes, maybe a bit dry ,not my favourite style but I have to admitt is better and more refined than last year's ultra sweet Tastival
