Whisky Reviews for Balblair 1985 GM

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.74 points

  1. Murxus scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

First impressions of the bottle where at 91 points. Now diminuatively downgraded to 89 pts. Really not bad but, but too much diluted and if you compare it with a OA `97 vintage there is not much difference except the price tag ;-)

PS: upgraded again to 90 pts. I love it ... and I hate it. It´s so simple. And then again it´s so complex. Really confusing what elder casks can deliver.

Nice fruit basket in the nose and in the mouthfeel. Mainly cinnamon-apples, some mango, some citrus. Would really get more than 90 points, but for 3 downsides :

    1 : Price tag.

2 : 43% is a little low for this one and shows on the relative shortness

3 : Looses a lot of fruity notes with air. I'd really recommend to fill sample bottles after opening it in order to avoid loosing much of the enjoyment it provides when sipped without too much air. Might be a side effect of point 2, by the way.

All this being said : a very, very good Balblair.

  3. The Macallan scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

N: very fruity nose with sherry on top and rather locked then open

P: again the lovely fruityness is there with notes of caramel and warming

F: lovely caramel, sherry spiced fruityness

C: A fine Balblair but does not have the behaviour of a 30y old, nothing realy exiting there

This is a very nice Balblair, but unfortunately not great because of its 43% ABV (a bit to watery for my palate). Yes, there is an age statement telling you that this malt has been matured for 30 years but wouldn't it have been much more complex with 46% ABV? Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10

Mmmmmhhhh…. what a dram! One of the best I’ve tried in many moons. I’ve been saying it for many years: Take a great quality refill barrel and great quality distillate and give it many years of time. This complex, layered, elegant and gentle dram with fruits and not too shy an oak influence is the result of that simple yet effective recipe. Two words: Pure elegance.94/100
