  1. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 82 points Super Administrator

The Balvenie range has a rather good reputation compared to the mass-produced Glenfiddich. Their 12-year-old 'Double Wood' expression greets the nose with juicy oranges, creamy vanilla and hints of marzipan - very harmonic and distinctly elegant. Tastewise, the spicy arrival builds up steadily before turning honey-sweet and nutty. Altogether, it appears spirity and thin (too low ABV). The finish is swift and mildly bitter with notes of milk chocolate and cinnamon. A decent but not very exciting Single Malt that is begging for a higher bottling strength.

This is a nice straight forward whisky. Not particularly special, but still a dram you can drink at any given moment. So, if you have enough of the complex & overpriced whisky's thrown at you feet these days, pour yourself a glass of this Balvenie. The price is right as well. You won't regret it. No, I don't have shares.

The smell is pleasant, stimulating, but not particularly complex. I like it anyway. However, it is too thin in the mouth, both in consistency and taste. The exit is also too one-sided.
All in all, the whisky doesn't do anything wrong, but it doesn't do a lot either really well. One-sided whiskys can also appeal, but that requires more intensity. Unfortunately, there is a lack of both intensity and complexity.
You can drink it on the side, but if you concentrate on it, it shows too little.

    Colour: amber.
Nose: sweet with apples, honey, oak, dried fruits, christmas cake, spices, apple peel, vanilla, furniture varnish and caramel notes.
Mouth: sweet and dry with apples, light honey, oak and spices notes.
Finish: middle, sweet, spicy and dry with apples and vanilla notes.
The Balvenie 12YO DoubleWood is well balanced, smooth and simple whisky. It could be a good choice for daily drinking. I gave 81 points.

Nose - The nose seems to dissipate rather quickly, leaving a strong green apple, honey, vanilla, light fire smoke with some spice and wood characters. Quite harsh at first.

Mouth - Strong spice, green apple, menthol, oak and wood sap.

Finish - Oak and fennel smoke .

Thoughts - Had to give this whisky plenty of time of open up, first night it was extremely aggressive. But tonight after leaving in the glass for about 2/3 hours, has toned it down. I know Balvenie 12 can be good, but this bottle is not what I remember. 78 from tonight's tasting, give me a week ago, it would be around 74/75
