I miss something the class at him ... mmh, I like them indeed
    • Nose
an open garage on the coast
      You are getting closer
salty rainwater that smells smoky of exhaust fumes and old engine oil
      the workshop is flooded
the apprentice probably had a secret snack and the master liked to drink some dry sherry
      You can smell it
      Truffles and caramel
      dry sherry
      Hello
      nobody there
      You have to smile
on the water floats a raisin
the others are still on the wooden workbench
      ____

a black radish juice note resonates
the violent flavors you get something clapped in front of your forehead
      but delicious
beautiful is the salty maritime smoke
and the dry Sherrynote, which integrates well
    • Taste
      soft start
      then wow
      salt
fiery chocolate with a lot of spice
      nutty
      barrel
      sherry
in the beginning very sweet a lot of caramel
before he gets hot on the tongue
with a lot of dark chocolate, sherry / raisin

Chocolate with some seasoning and salt
Barrel and chocolate> gets really dry

I am still odorless in my flooded garage
    • Finish
      medium and dry
Chocolate, barrel, dark fruit, the barrel comes well and also brings the sweetness of baked apples

Quite simply the best of the almost-a-hundred Bunnas I own.

  6. markjedi1 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    Peanuts

Bunna keeps releases malts with impossible names… Rubha a’ Mhail should be pronounced ‘roo-a-val’ and is the name of one of the lighthouses close to Bunnahabhain, some 6 kilometers to the north on the northern coast of the island, lit for the first time in 1859. I digress. The bottle was one of the two released by the distillery for Feis Ile 2015 and matured on Manzanilla sherry casks.

Hello? That is a weird nose. I get sweet sherry notes in the guise of plums and sultanas, but also salted peanuts and baby breath that dominate the nose. Nice and creamy but at the same time pretty yeasty as well, if you know what I mean. Chocolate with praline filling. Some wet earth and… err… rotting grapes (not an off-note!). Weird and probably not for everyone.

Creamy on the palate and pretty dirty, while the sherry kicks in with orange peel, candied ginger and rich honey. Midpalate a fiercely salty note appears as does some woodsmoke. This is not for the faint hearted, I can tell you that.

The finish is medium long, on honey and fruit, but at the death it’s mostly nuts – peanuts! – that rule.

Intriguing, but not easy. This was work. But worthy.

This is great whisky we had the Auld acquaintance bought years ago at Inveraray 6 bottles I remember tasting that and drinking 2 but and selling the rest at 450 to 700 each that is great whisky as well and this babe is not far behind that I have the auld Aquantence at 96 points no less this in my opinion is a 94 pointer it is near exact the same profile as the great Auld A bottled in 2000 it’s got the burnt caramel the long smooth feel that actually gets smother near the end ,it’s not quite as rich as the Auld A yet is has more layers ,Though this is an 11 year old it is set to be a sure star of the future I tipped the whisky exchange off on the Auld A in 2005 I will now give them a ring re this stunning whisky forget what’s on the label =11 it means zero here . This needs bought guys before it’s silly money cheers Symon brown
    • Nose
See Auld A notes it’s near same it’s to me an Auld A reincarnation I asked for an Auld A style for that fest 2015 they delivered cheers guys
    • Taste
See Auld A notes just slightly less rich yet more layers
    • Finish
See Auld A notes same finish long smith sweet

Indeed a very intriguing dram. Well controlled, with an inviting nose
and a delightful taste. A good solid whisky with layers of complexity
and not overpowered by the sherry casks. Big, spicy and then a lingering
savouriness. Rich and mellow and no need for water. A serious autumnal
    dram.

    • Nose
Sweet start on the nose with sherry, plums and raisins, followed by dark
berries, cherries and caramel. Smooth and slightly spicy with cinnamon,
oak and a delicate nuttiness (walnuts) in the back, nicely wrapped in
fresh sea air and a whiff of earthy tones.
    • Taste
Bold on the palate. A mouth watering start with dry sherry and oak,
slightly astringent. Then the sweetness arrives with dark cherries,
plums and dark grapes. This is complemented by a delicate spiciness of
oak, pepper and nutmeg. Becomes slightly bitter and dry towards the
finish with walnuts, grape peel and tannins.
    • Finish
The finish is long, pleasantly warming with lingering (bitter) walnuts,
spiced oak and espresso. Becomes very dry on the tail accompanied by
      earthy notes.

WITH WATER: There's more dark fruits on the nose with a
few drops of water. Sweet sherry flavours nicely mixed with earthy
tones, damp moss and leather. Strong but significantly tamed on the
palate with a slightly sweetness and gently warming spiciness. Walnut
and hazelnut flavours are dominating towards the finish. The finish is
still long, warm and dry with walnuts, mocha and spiced oak.

Very impressive and sherry-heavy, but not intrusive or fake, but also doesn't seem boring, has something wild and impetuous, but also flatters. Great. I love it!
    • Nose
Dried plums, leather, sherry sweetness, a bit oily, light smoke, alcohol tingles in the nose, a slightly sour fruit note, herbs and a raw meat note waft by
    • Taste
Prunes here too, raisins, dry, a bit oily, smoke, the whisky appears 'hot' and warming, thyme and the mushroom note typical of Manzanilla and very creamy
    • Finish
very light smoke and clear sherry with the mushroom notes remain, very creamy

    • Taste
strong (also at the start); first sweet then drier with the salt almonds; (Heather) honey
    • Finish
hot warm; strong; remains dry with roasted almonds; long; Baked apple with marzipan but not too sweet

N: Dense, creamy, oily, cake-like malt
T: Just like the nose - intense and sparkly.
F: …… bitter-oak, sour-mouldiness, peppery and lively to the last.
C: This ‘engineered fun’ initially compares well with the 25yo WB, although this Feis ile is more upfront and immediate. However after a short while it does becomes a little tedious,..

The smell is expressive, independent and multilayered, but also very direct. The mouth is very intense for such a young whisky and looks very ripe. The barrel has done a very good job. The finish is long but not eternal. I really like the whisky.
    • Nose
Sour cherries, Black Forest cake, mixed with grassy notes, dry sherry in the background, spicy, salt, machine oil, slightly chemically, but not unpleasantly, after a while it becomes really sweet, cocoa, no alcohol
    • Taste
Silky soft mouthfeel and prickling on the tongue, it starts with sweet caramel, at the same time a salty pungency, dry sherry and dark chocolate with pieces of cherry, my tongue is in a pleasant way in flames, the whisky feels almost syrupy viscous, bitter oak
    • Finish
The finish is long and warm, warm oak spice spreads on the palate, the glow comes only very slowly to extinction, at the end it is once again sweet, but also dry, the cherries show up one last time

For me, Bunnahabhain is the Islay distillery that stays somewhat off my radar. When people think of Islay, they think of heavy hitting peatbombs. Bunnahabhain shows Islay whisky can also have a softer side, bottling mostly unpeated whisky.

Ruhba A' Mhail is one of the Feis Ile 2015 bottlings. It has aged for 11 years in Manzanilla casks and there are 1200 bottles available. It's bottled at 57% ABV.

    Color: Quite dark, amber +1

Nose: Whew, this one will take some time to dissect. The sweet sherry notes are most obvious, plums and raisins. It's bit nippy on the nose, but this smooths out after some time in the glass. Some earth and mineral notes start appearing, alongside some citrus. There's also a yeasty note.

Palate: It starts off very oily, mostly diesel with a filthy side. Then comes the sherry influence in the form of orange peels. The earthy note from the nose is still present.

Finish: Medium long with lingering diesel and earth. At the end some lemon comes out.

It's an intriguing dram, you need to spend some time with it before it shows all it's colors. If you can get your hands on a simple, taste it. The quite unusual casks offer an interesting experience.

Fruits are coming through by adding some water to this fino streaked Bunnahabhain.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 6/10
    • Nose
Dry fino sherry, tabaco, fermented grapes, salt, plums, dates.
    • Taste
Dry fino sherry, salt, plum marmelade.
    • Finish
Nuts (different types), salt, sea, barley, fruit schnaps.

  33. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A perfect example of a Bunnahabhain. You have to like that and I do it!
    • Nose
is directly full throttle, very intense, classic Bunnahabhain with a lot of muff, superimposed by Manzanilla, rather dry and spicy, yellow fruit, licorice, damp tobacco, after long smells a hunch of sulfur, it is said to smell the taste in the mouth, interestingly enough I find nothing nutty in the nose even after the first sip, but the sulfur is clearer, wow with water, the Naser is really dirty
    • Taste
a little bit of sulfur, sherry, full-bodied, salt, a bit like seawater, nutty, even more nut, dry, the fruits are only to be guessed, here too water opens powerfully and helps the fruits a bit from the sinking
    • Finish
Nut, nut, nut and nut, it is quite dry, behind the back the salt comes again

  34. Noface83 scored this whisky 90 points Specialist

Nose: beautiful dry sherry (Fino character), orange peel, salty and maritime, typical dirty Bunna undertone, with the time even more fruity notes such as dried apricots and bananas. The alcohol is very pure and Esther-heavy (almost like a fruit schnapps)
Taste: wow- what a sweet taste, dry sherry, honey, salt and plum jam. In the finish then very dry with plum and a slight pepper note. The finish remains long with a delicate oak bitterness and the dry Sherry sweetness.
Ok manzanilla-heavy whiskys have always been mine and this one is a prime example of how to combine a brilliant distilling character harmoniously with the barrel influence of a Manzanilla sherry!

a very intense finoartiger Sherry influence, funnily, I do not like fino-sherry at all, but the Bunna Banana character with the dirty distress is wonderful. A unique, great dram! A shot of water should be pure.
    • Nose
Pure: immediately beautiful, intense orange, at the same time immediately there the salty, slightly dirty Bunnaflair, which only hinbekommt this distillery. Banana is also there, but dry figs dominate. With water: opens up beautiful, much fruity, now with honeydew melon and kirsch water, the coastal note is also intense and even saltier.
    • Taste
Pure: very dry, salty and sweet onset, light honey meets roasted almonds. Then clear pepper sharpness and plum compote, very strong dry sherry influence, full on the 12th with water: not so hot, still very dry (despite water ;-)), also here more salt, not so much fruit. Can you do that?
    • Finish
      long, syrupy, nutty, dry.
