Whisky Reviews for Port Charlotte 2002 WhB

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.84 points

  1. KayMeertens scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Blind tasting of a sample. A fairly straight-forward Islay dram in which the cask doesn't have a very dominant role. I like it, but an average score of almost 90 is not deserved in my opinion. 84 in my book, maybe 85.
    • Nose
Peat, citrus, orange, vanilla sugar, strawberry, a little caramel and some spice. When comparing it to another peated whisky, I discover a strange sweetness like melasses or grape juice.
    • Taste
Peat, orange, citrus, pepper, vanilla and caramel. It can't handle water very well.
    • Finish
Peat, dark chocolate, orange, gingerbread and grape.

Very more-ish. These wine-matured Port Charlottes get better every year!
    • Nose
Salty and herbaceous, with dry earthy peat mud. Well-seasoned roast potatoes and sweet fried cabbage. Ready-salted crisps. Waxy jelly beans. Red apples, and juicy plum flesh. Fruit-flavoured rolling tobacco.
    • Taste
A sweet-yet-salty malt biscuit flavour starts, with a pronounced peppery peaty tang. Orange candy and citrus pith. Dry savoury notes of old bitter tobacco, leaf litter, and hazelnuts. With water the peat calms right down, the texture becomes soft and silky, and sweet white wine grape flavours come through.
    • Finish
Long, tingly and salty with a chewy mouth-coating peat residue, and a little cigarette ash. A touch of soap foam at the very end.
