  1. Gloin scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

The smell is really good, multi-layered and independent, the finish is very nice, the taste is slightly different from the other two impressions, but not much. Unfortunately, the first impression in the mouth is a bit too spicy and alcoholic. Still a nice whisky.
    • Nose
Smoke, bright fruit, slightly sour, grapefruit, medicinal, herbs (only which?), Sweeter, a little cut grass, wood, dry white wine (Chardonnay), cinnamon, the smoke is always there, but not dominant, more restrained than at younger / other Caol Ilas, hardly any alcohol in the nose
    • Taste
Slightly on the go, a little alcoholic, the second sip is better, smoked wood, citrus fruits, milk chocolate with orange peel
    • Finish
Heavy smoke, cold ashes, but this impression disappears after a while, then remains slightly bitter sweetness, slightly soapy, but not unpleasant, somewhat astringent, longer

    Very good Caol Ila bottling.
    • Nose
Peaty, maritim and mineral aromas at first nosing. There are notes of paraffin, smoke and green apples as well. A lovely nose.
    • Taste
Smoked apple with pepper and salt at first mouthfeel. Very spicy, dry and peaty. An oily licorice aroma and notes of ashes are coming up. Very nice and tasty.
    • Finish
Long, warming from deep inside with notes of ashes and peat and a dry, dusty aftertaste.

Very promising in the nose, but can not hold in the mouth and then mutates again to a typical Caol Ila, albeit one of the better. Definitely better than the 2014er
    • Nose
Strong alcohol notes, kumquats, phenolic smoke, some ashes, oily, vanilla, some caramel
    • Taste
sweet, phenolic smoke, vanilla, tannins, here too the kumquats, but more restrained, some oak and herbs, above all lies a liquor mist
    • Finish
light smoke, fading and oak, quite long

[June, 2015]  I had this dram during a "Feis Ile 2015" tasting at Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90. I took no detailed notes.

again a really great Caol Ila, does not quite come to the 2013 Feis filling, but much is not missing. The high-end version of the Caol Ila Distiller's Edition.
    • Nose
Pure: unmistakably Caol Ila, marvelously maritime, but also the same dark, heavy sweetness from the Muskatellerfässer. Honeydew melon, banana and peach fall on as fruit notes. I would classify the smoke as more subtle. With a little bit of water he gets even more coastal. Honey notes increase, beautiful and round, a certain fruit acid reminiscent of white wine character. A great nose overall!
    • Taste
Pure: strong, sharp start with white pepper and a fair amount of salt. At the second sip already milder, white chocolate, spicy peat, bread, caraway. Delicious! With a little bit of water, the smoke takes something, even the sweetness comes through better, now nut flavors from the wine barrel. Benefit from the water.
    • Finish
      medium long, smoky, dry.

Amazingly mild start for a Caol Ila. This malt develops only after a few seconds in the mouth its power and its aromas.
    • Nose
cold smoke, orange tones, a little soapy
    • Taste
Barley malt, chocolate and a touch of pancakes with maple syrup and cinnamon
    • Finish
long, glowing and drier without losing the pancake sweetness, on the palate remains smoke with a dust note and a touch of damp wood in the sun

    My Ranking: 1.Abgang, 2.Nase, 3.Mund
    unfortunately an alcohol note
Nose and finish pleasant and complex
the mouth can not keep up
    • Nose
Immediately after pouring a Kuhstallnote then: slightly biting ash smoke with medicine note
      in the smoke apricot
subtly warm herbs (coriander) and cereals
      hay
      weak cardamom note
      Cinnamon and orange
      salt
      dry wood
      sweet cereal
a very light Caol Ila stinging in the nose: (

The nose is very complex for a Caol Ila
    • Taste
a bit spicy and slightly alcoholic on the go
becomes very chocolaty on the palate ..
      ashen and smoky
      yellow fruit

      in the throat slight sharpness
    • Finish
      long and moist
      getting sweeter
      with wood, smoke and ashes
      Orange with cilantro

the finish is very mild and pleasant

Nose: surprisingly lightly smoky for a Caol Ila, wet charcoal, very "green" in the nose (floral and a little hay), salty butter, with the time come also brightly cooked fruits. Is a NEN Caol Ila like I never had it in my nose. Looks very complex but also a bit dry.
Taste: now the coal is lit, warm and smoky spreads in the mouth, hay and freshly threshed grain, some pepper and dried fruit. On the finish very dry with bitter oak, pepper and a little nut.
Huih certainly not for everyone. But very interesting and idiosyncratic. That is exactly how a festival bottling should be. It has to stand out from the OAs and that creates the here!

Seriously complex nose on this: coal, wet leaves, vanilla, creme brûlée, strawberries, ripe cherries, freshly cut timber, wood varnish, engine oil (like an old steam train), sea salt, all enveloped with beautifully soft peat smoke. A drop of water helped the nose to open up even more. More straightforward on the palate, with salt, white pepper and peat to the fore, although sweeter fruits linger in the background alongside roasted nuts. Medium length finish, with a slight bitter dryness. Clearly an experiment (just how many casks does a good base spirit need to see?), but one that works for me.
