Whisky Reviews for Jones Road Distillery 1942 CA

Probably the rarest whiskey I have ever tasted (there are very few bottles of this Distillery known, let alone available), but also one of the weirdest. The nose is gorgeous (mid 90p), the whiskey however has spent too long in a cask to be really enjoyable. But it is very interesting indeed and not totally undrinkable. This miniature is the last known whiskey from Jones Road distilled in 1942. According to Brian Townsend magnificent book 'The Lost Distilleries of Ireland' it is likely that the Jones Road Distillery stopped full time distilling in 1926, but that have continued distilling irregularly until 1945. Tasted together with Aby at our 'Irish Extravaganza'.
    • Nose
Beautiful nose to start with. Prunes and raspberries that comes out first. Followed by raisins, menthol and terpenic aromas. Polished wood and hints of cured ham. It's all very sappy with hints of cough syrup, tobacco and old leather.  Absolutely brilliant. Comparable with the best Glendronach's from the 1970's I tasted.
    • Taste
Bloody hell, what is this! Truckloads of mint, pine and eucalyptus. Heavily concentrated tannins and very very resinous (like biting in wood). Later on associations with diesel-oil, rubber, plastic and chemical factories. I have had many different whiskies in my life, but I have never tasted something like this before. Adding water doesn't make things better.
    • Finish
Very long and extremely dry. Surgical spirits and turpentine. Bitter almonds and dark espresso coffee. Spices of black pepper. Menthol. Needless to say that this whiskey is complete out of balance.

nose is sensational (92p), taste is very concentrated with lots of wood and something plastic (80p).

    Tasted at 'Irish extravaganza'
