Whisky Reviews for Kilchoman 2010 SMWS 129.7

  1. Donwaldorf scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Very pleasant surprised by young c Kilchoman. I'm not a big fan of this distillery but I really liked this dram. A mix between a "dirty" whisky and a more conventional whisky.
    • Nose
The first fragrances are "dirty" and farm.
Then it's rather cool on peat oil and camphor. There are notes of lemon, citrus and solvent. The earthy peat and farmer comes back from time to time.
    • Taste
Attack rather sharp, but not alcoholic. There is a nice balance in the middle of the mouth on peat oil, spices with a very medicinal side. Finally, some notes of cocoa, citrus and vegetal mingle with the whole.
    • Finish
Very nice length on milky smoke, chocolatey, salty and fruity. There are also notes of fresh grass.

(Notes from the SMWS; http://www.smws.nl/index.php/shop/whisky/islay/129.7-new-1-bottle-per-member-detail )

Our artist walks on the beach wet with driftwood crushing seashells underfoot. Hey, the thick hemp rope from the groyne and pushed his boat to sea. Smells from the local maltled with oily seaweed. He sucked a Fisherman's friend while squeezing his acrylic paint on a steam newspaper and wiped his brush with turpentine. A heavy rainstorm brought him back to shore and into the boatshed. Everything became toasted and honey glazed: marshmallow, popcorn, charcoal and chocolate. He'd caught no fish so instead baked sweet soda bread in the dying ashe watching the rain. Our artist walks across the wet beach, which is littered with flotsam - the shells crunch under his feet. He knots the thick hemp rope and pushes his boat into the water. Smells of the local malting mingle with oily seaweed. He takes a Fisherman's Friend, smears acrylic paint on a damp newspaper (he's a poor painter) and cleans his brushes in turpentine. A heavy shower brings him back ashore and into his boat hut. Now everything is roasted and glazed with honey - marshmallows, popcorn, charcoal and chocolate. He has not caught any fish and instead bakes soda bread in the outgoing ashes and watches the rain. Alcohol: 64.7% - Distilled: June 2010 - Outturn: 272 - Age: 4 Years - Cask type: First Fill Barrel
