Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 2004 GM

5 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.69 points

  1. Cubey666 scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

clean peat smoke, no dirty edge what so ever, clearly Caol Ila profile. This next to some lovely fruits: white grapes, lemon and banana.

In the taste a bit more spicy meatiness, with a pleasant alcohol burn.

Finish medium longupdate: after a lighter peated whisky this one shows it's sherry profile quite a bit more, even some raisins, perhaps some PX?

    Body: Light/Medium

Nose: Creamy and sweet. Quite light and ethereal with classic lemon, banana, pineapple and some mango. A mineral side that hints at Bruichladdich with some smoke and medicinal notes as well. Some light malt with brown bread.

Water: More malt, more brown bread then more citrus with lots of lemon and some lime. After a bit- More leafy and earthy with wet leaves, green apple and some young smoke. Toasted brown bread, smoked vanilla pod, a little biscuity.

Taste: Light arrival, prickling alcohol with lemon juice and peel, building oily smoke, light lemon, very mineral development (Reminiscent of an Octomore for me) with smoke and sea salt, a little scorched wood too, charcoal.

Water: Sweeter, fuller arrival. More prickling development with sour citrus, lemon and lime, then going smoky with very oily mineral notes. Peat smoke and salty lemon juice. More water: More sweet again, green apple, more peat smoke, peated malt. Even more water: Green banana, smoked pears, bonfire embers, a little hot with white pepper and ginger.

Finish: Medium/Long length. Light smokiness with salty lemon juice and oily mineral stoniness.

  3. Monsieur Dram scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A fiery young Caol Ila, who has a profile of Peaty Sherry on paper, but who, in the end, is far enough away ... He is atypical with sweet vegetal notes quite unusual for Caol Ila but he does not stay less a pleasant whisky to drink, with a beautiful aromatic complexity and a beautiful maturity.
    • Nose
it is directly on a rather spicy nose, with frank notes of pepper, chilli and turmeric. The wood is also very present, bringing at the same time some notes of mushrooms, mildew, but also of old wine. A marine side develops with seaweeds, raw scallops and salt. With the opening all this is arranged and gains in homogeneity: the eucalyptus is wrapped in a beautiful fat smoke, almost sweet, with scents of antiseptic, citrus, chocolate and yellow fruits. An atypical nose for a Caol Ila. It would almost remind us of a Laphroaig.
    • Taste
peat puts before a plethora of explosive aromas! A dry side, with antiseptic, smoke, a little wood, and then another pan, fresher and sweet with licorice, eucalyptus, a hint of honey, stevia for its sweet side vegetable, and then a nice fruity intensity: apple, pear, quince. The wood brings spices, but they are less present than the nose. Here, it's really the empyreumatic notes that dominate. The alcoholic notes are completely undetectable, everything is perfectly homogeneous.
    • Finish
intense, long. The fruits have a long persistence, but gradually give way to peat and dry wood.

Note by Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com:Caol Ila 10 yo 2004/2015 (60.1%, Gordon & MacPhail, Cask Strength, sherry butts)  A vatting of four casks. Colour: straw. Nose: the sherry’s light. Some sucrosity, gravel, grass, mint… It’s quite strong, so… With water: simple, easy, straightforward. Not one that will revolutionise Mankind, but it’s fine. Mouth (neat): very thick, clean, salty, zesty, with a honeyed roundness. Is that the sherry? Love its almondy side. Lemon-flavoured marzipan coated with Demerara sugar. Or something like that. With water: nice salty touch. Green olives, salted marzipan, smoked fish. Finish: medium, sweet and salty. Comments: very good. You don’t need an essay, do you? SGP:556 - 83 points.
