Whisky Reviews for Old Pulteney 12-year-old

  1. LDB scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Clearly a beginner´s whisky in the coastal department.
Not bad at all, and nothing wrong with is, just somewhat... boring in the long long run. And at 40% also too weak.

  2. Querky scored this whisky 80 points Expert Junior

    A very inoffensive, quaffable dram.
    • Nose
      82 82
Lemon sherbet, sweet green apples, vanilla, oat flakes.
    • Taste
      80 80
Light, almost cooling mouthfeel. Sweet orchard fruits, especially pears, accompanied by vanilla and honey.
    • Finish
      78 78
First a mild bitterness with a light fruitiness, then diluted vanilla. Medium length.

It's an interesting and engaging whisky. It's well made and matured in decent casks. It has a dry green-ness and sappy floral quality that some people might not enjoy, but, if you're looking for something to give you a break from sherry cask dominated whisky, this is definitely worth your perusal.
    • Nose
      Honey, bitter-sweet grain, and oak

      Bittersweet citrus and sea spray

hint of vanilla and sweet cream

      sea-salt caramel and a hint of wood-char

(10min) strange whiff of menthol and wood smoke

(15 min) Spirity mixed fruits replace citrus
    • Taste
      complex sweet

white-grape raisins, floral honey, salt/savory, and light
savory-sweet wood smoke (hickory or maple)

sweet lime and orange rind (salted preserved orange skin [Chen-Pi: Chinese medicinal ingredient])

(10-15 minutes) Smokiness comes to the front and becomes a little more like oak, dark chocolate shows up, and cherry cordial takes the place of the citrus rind.
    • Finish
The dram becomes dry, greener, and saltier as it finishes.

This is the whisky that started it all for me. its a very young whisky but has a very good taste, not to strong. Perfect to share with guests @ home.

For the price of 30€ i havent found a bottle that can compete with Old pulteny 12Y. For me this is the best whisky under 50€ you can find.

Perfect whisky to start and build more experience on what you like.

I wanted to try it for a long time (Ralphy praised it very much) and today I took a sample with me. The smell does not appeal to me right away, he is rather sprightly, I give him some time. He is fruity, smells more like grapes than sherry. A first sip does not make him better. The taste is ordinary, rather young, immature. Despite a lean 40% I add some water, trying to save him. But no, that will not work anymore. I'm really disappointed ...
