    A quite unpleasant experience. Maybe ist due to bottle ageing, but this sample is lacking freshness and fragrance. Maybe it was there when it was bottled. However, this feels like licking your Hands after fixing the car or garden work.

      Definitely not my profile. Smelly metallic notes.

      This dram is convincing without a nose. It is therefore full-bodied and sweet. Never experienced such an extreme difference from nose to palate. A real rollercoaster.

    Delicate or just rather thin... We could be very nice and say it is a gentle delicate dram. But I guess back in the day it was considered rather thin.

      Liquorice, lemon, faint smoky note. Briny and some sort of oil, toolbox grease. Anise, fennel, menthol. Somewhat peaty.
    • Taste
      More flavour then the nose would suggest, liquorice, mint, lemon, herbal. Some smoke, dry ropes, briny. But also the oily aspect emerges, not bad to be honest.
    • Finish
      Caramel, liquorice, briny, earthy. Almost on mushrooms, peaty.

    Sloping part. Sauerkraut, smoke and licorice in both nose and mouth. Still somehow delicious. Maybe because of the creamy biscuit / vanilla base. For 43% really strong, full.

    Not bad, yet no winner either.

      Quite restrained. Oil (tool shop) and earthy/dirty, and quite some malt. 
    • Taste
      Much more interesting than on the nose. The dirty, oily profile is still there, but it's also fresh on mind and waxy barley. A drop of lemon and orange complete the palate.

      Medium, a little drying on spices from the wood (pepper and ginger), honeyed barley, grass and mint.

    Not bad and probably the peatiest blend I have had from the 60`s/70`s

      I am surprised here because it is not very expressive on first nosing.

      Smells like dirt mechanics overalls, hints of petrol, oil that sort of thing. Brine , peat and something a little dirty but everything is quite restrained.

      Peat at the front of the palate mixed in with brine, coffee, a little liquorice, caramel and biscuit.

      The peat then becomes more pronounced and grows but still quite refined and mixed in with cream.

      almost what I would call medium finishing on sweet peat

    According Serge this whisky contains Port Ellen:

    Old Guns (43%, OB, blend, Low Robertson, 1970s) Low Robertson & Co were holding Port Ellen's license, so there must be some young PE in there, let's try to find out... Colour: pale gold. Nose: ah yes, this tar, this smoke, this ‘good’ rubber and these notes of motor and almond oils blended together… You just can’t miss it. There’s also a little sea water and then smoother tones of camphor, milk chocolate, vanilla and apple pie. No big monster but indeed the main base malt should have been PE. Mouth: this time this is extremely peaty, quite brutal, very briny and salty, ashy, sooty, lemony… There must be at least 30% Port Ellen in there, if not much more. Also notes of sardines or anchovies in brine, kippers… And plain sea water! It’s actually more coastal than many a Port Ellen. Finish: quite long and always very briny. A lot of salt in the aftertaste. Comments: a spectacular beast, I guess the good people who would have bought this while expecting some good average blended Scotch may have been very surprised. It’s pure smoky brine. SGP:356 - 86 points.
