This is a shocker. 50ml gift sample that came along with a full bottle of Kavalan solist sherry cask that I purchased onboard an EVA air flight from NYC to Taipei.

Heavily sherried, obviously, but it has this ashy and leathery component that I love. Very fruity -- cherries, prunes, mandarin oranges - mix of fruits that I find in much older glendronachs (1972's!!!!), although not as polished or concentrated. Perfect ABV of 54%. Can add a few drops of water, but there's no need really.

Overall, this is an astoundingly good whisky for something so young. I would love to own a whole bottle of this, if it even exist. This is not a single cask, but came from oloroso casks. Bottling date for this 50ml sample was November 16, 2016 at 11:32. I am scoring this an absolutely surprising 92 points, which is higher than any of the single casks of solist sherry Kavalans I've tried.

very sherry lasts not too pushy, good sherry malt
    • Nose
      80 80
Sherry, spicy oak, slightly alcoholic or smoky (somewhat difficult to define)
    • Taste
      84 84
Sherry, sweet and nutty, malt and oak, spicy
    • Finish
      82 82
Sherry, oak and spices, becoming somewhat bitter later

Boring "cheap sherry cask" raisins sherry dram..

  4. Joschbert scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

The slightly annoying solvent note evaporates in the glass after some time, the whisky definitely needs water and time - then it gets creamier. The oak is too dominant for me. A total of 84-85 / 100
    • Nose
a lot of sherry, a solvent note (similar to some bourbons), caramel, coconut, oranges, blackberries (86)
    • Taste
dark chocolate, plain oak (more amrican), caramel, menthol note, alcoholic spiciness, now spices (clove) (85)
    • Finish
some tobacco, gets very dry, oak flavoring - medium long (83)

with water: saltier, fruitier, brings out
the cask quality, but the alcohol becomes spicier and rougher

note: alcohol not as rough as the 46%
    version
    • Nose
sherry, burnt sugar, roasted wood, red
      fruits, musky grain, bitter
      grass
    • Taste
toffee, somewhat salty sherry, red fruits/dried,
      red wood
    • Finish
      medium-long, dry,
oaky, somewhat salty red fruits, cognac, bitter grass/roasted nuts at the
      back
