This is listed as un-peated but on the nose I certainly get a light puff of peat that mingles with sea spray, new rubber (like a bicycle inner tube), and a core of some sherried fruits including orange and pineapple. I found the fruits are nudged to the edge during the arrival with tingly pepper and salt to the fore. It develops into tart lemon, blood orange and grapefruit and a sherry dryness at the end. The grapefruit continues to round out in the finish which is also is a little peaty and spicy. The empty glass smells of tobacco and sawdust.

In summary, it was a very interesting 5cl miniature and my first Hazelburn. But not in the same league as the Springbank I have tried and not enough for me to consider getting a full bottle. However, I would like to try the Hazelburn 10 at some stage.

  2. Ostap scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The style is more like Highland than Campbelltown. The aroma is restrained, but interesting. The aftertaste is a bit tanned, as for me. Good balance. I liked it.
    • Nose
Fresh, clean, dessert, juicy, notes of faded ash, mineral, raisins, sweet tobacco leaves, cake "Prague", cupcake, chocolate, coffee three in one with the aroma of hazelnuts, berry sour, dried apricots / apricot drying, citrus candied fruits, dates, dust, smoke-wax wood, condensed milk, ginger and cinnamon.
    • Taste
Unobtrusive dessert flows into meat and oak themes, medical notes, nuts, citrus and sour berries.
    • Finish
Warm and long enough, pepper, nut bitter, dries. Quite a narrow range.

Not bad whisky, rather simple and straightforward. Triple distillation cannot be recognized (at least by me). The nose is pleasant but there is too much of oak (and coming from it bitterness) in the palate. This expression is a good fellow for drinking but not really good for enjoying
    • Nose
Fresh, slightly smoky, earthy, green apple, raisins, vanilla, grapefruit zest, oat cookies, citrus notes, water intensifies smoke
    • Taste
Oily, oaky, a bit spicy, malty, light bitterness, nutmeg, some shortbread cookies
    • Finish
Medium-long, oaky, malty, warm, getting dry fast

    Unexpectedly spicy and smoky.

Should not Hazelburn be without smoke? But I'm obviously not the first one to wonder. For the first few moments, I had the idea of having a longrow in front of me - parallels are definitely there and can not be dismissed out of hand.
    • Nose
initially restrained, vanilla, a portion of peat smoke, sweetness, tingling citrus and some sweetened jellybeans with lemon flavor, subtle caramel base, ripe apples, bread and bread spices, also oak spiciness, subtle darker or more mature aromas can be made out, rudiments of liquid honey and bright Fruit juices (pear, apricot, melon), salt implications
    • Taste
Citrus and a lot of peat smoke, behind it malt and caramel, very spicy with neat pepper, vanilla, rather dry, slightly bitter oak, dry fruit, here comes the sherry barrel portion to advantage
    • Finish
Dry smoke remains, in addition to seasoning and pepper, a little vanilla, hints of paraffin and honey, slight bitterness, after the fading of the wort follows a short fade-out with oak and malt

  7. Torfding scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Aroma: pleasant warmth (unfortunately subsides, but remains pleasant), chocolate, fruits, creamy, sweet

Taste: caressing, wood, caramel, nuts, pepper, cereals

Finish: very pleasant long finish with the impression of light smoke (wherever that comes from), a bit lemony

Comment: delicious and well-balanced malt, which should not be smoky, but tastes a bit like this
