A very consistent presentation from nose to finish, great balance between distillery character and (fantastic!) wood, no off-notes whatsoever, just a rich, creamy, oily, fruity experience with just the right dose of peat. At the same time it is neither too weak, nor overpowering, nothing over-engineered or “made to suit a certain taste” about it – an honest, down-to-earth malt from an underrepresented distillery. This gives most of the big names a run for their money

unfortunately right after the start very soapy on the palate

    but then it disappears

A Kilkerran that mixes finesse and character. It has all the necessary assets for a good whisky. I loved that it's the taste and the price.
    • Nose
Smooth and silky smoke accompanied by a beautiful "mineralite" and some cooked fruits. Some scents of cooked meats mingle with the whole.
    • Taste
Alcohol perfectly integrated. Very sweet and unctuous in the mouth. The mineral and floral notes are very present accompanied by light smoke.
    • Finish
Nice length on a light smoke, a nice wood, some flowers, vanilla and some spices.

Let's say it immediately, it seems that a Kilkerran aged in bourbon casks can not be bad. This last edition of the series "Work In Progress" does not disappoint, quite the contrary. She confirms that Glengyle distills a very large whisky. This version is richer, but also much more complex than the previous version, less instant. The aromas sparkle, swarm and explode on all sides. But, once again, it will be necessary to be patient to discover all the facets of this superb whisky.
    • Nose
once is not custom, it seems that the nose needs a little time to reveal itself. At first, it is quite aggressive with unpleasant alcoholic notes. Indeed, with time, everything becomes much more acceptable. A dry side, especially with a hint of cereals and hazelnuts, but, on the whole, it's very fresh and sweet, with vanilla, lemon meringue pie, mint peach soup , licorice and marshmallow. There is also a sea side, with iodine, salt, some notes of algae, but also a more mineral and medicinal. Underlying smoke gravitates in the middle of this string of smells, leaving pretty ashy notes on its way.
    • Taste
Palate: the smoke is a little more present. It is a festival of flavors, which intermingle with each other. The sweet side, mainly marshmallow and egg cream, blends perfectly with lemon and smoke, almost reminiscent of a fine and delicate peat Caol Ila. There is also a hint of olive that works well with liquorice and iodized notes, and fruits, such as green apple and apricot, agree best with fresh mint and vanilla. It's complex and very rich.
    • Finish
Finale: it is very long and intense, with spicy notes, smoke, licorice, marshmallow, citrus, and always this mineral and medicinal side. After a good twenty minutes, these notes of smoke, ashes and citrus still persist.

Aroma: Creamy chocolate, the scent is a bit windy, with wood, bourbon breeze, skin, slightly spices, cereals, hazelnuts. It's not bad, but .... (84 b)
Taste: ... the main thing is on the tongue. Here he will show his quality. Malt, the bourbon drum again. Spicy, with sharpness of alcohol, but we can also find honey sweetness, creamy chocolate, candied fruit, and even pepper and citrus. (88 b)
    Points: 86
    Summary: Tasty very good whisky.

    Do not be his age.
    Alcohol well integrated. Gourmand.
    • Nose
lemon, traces of iodine, mineral, some almond, very pure, a little charcoal.
    • Taste
Mouth very oily, always lemon, mineral, a little spice, almonds, traces of iodine, dark chocolate. Pretty chiseled. Not very sweet. Pretty austere but good.
    • Finish
Pretty long, lemon, iodine, almond, baked cake.

Surprising, a soil Whisky, sulphurous, we like the style? Perfect in this case, if not, go to 12 years which is to my taste better balanced, more greedy and pastry chef. If it had to be given a subjective note, it would be a 86
    • Nose
The dress is gold, the multitude of tears scattered, thin and slow. Taste on palm: Smoked and roasted cereals, wet rock, white pepper, peach and almond paste. Vegetal is the key word, a real peat bog, manure, hot metal, seaweed, freshly mown grass, peppermint. Apple too ripe on wet cereal background. Light smoked and irritating tangy that rises to the eyes and throat. After a long aeration, I confirm the earthy and vegetal aspect, digging deeply, one would touch a cake dough.
    • Taste
The palate is dry and thick, oily, rising in power on pepper and chilli, earth and smoked cereals. Almond cake, apple, pear and burnt wood. Freshness. Peppermint, fresh grass rubbed between the hands, and dandelion.
    • Finish
The finish is long on beautiful herbaceous and mentholated bitters. Seaweed and seawater. Empty glass: cereals, scorched earth and cooked white fruits.

  10. Calmar scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Tightly and powerfully, but more tightly, compared to the samples of the commercial fortress, simpler, a sort of antipode Kilhomanu - there is everything below 50% - sluggish and boring, here on the contrary - weak releases will be more interesting, although due to power and density on points a small advantage.
    • Nose
An open, moist, raw wood, lemon peel, a damp, wet grain, grassy notes.
    • Taste
Powerful, woody-peppery, ginger, caramel sweetness, lollipops with sourness.
    • Finish
Spicy, ginger-lollipop, lemon, orange, oily, light astringent oak, fresh juicy grass.
