Strawberry, pastry, raisin and caramel. A maltiness that seems rather un-Scottish and reminds me of Millstone and that I haven't found in any sherried Glenrothes before.
Taste

Cherry, malt, raisin, strawberry, pastry and pepper.

Finish

Raisin, toffee, hazelnut, mocha, cherry and malt.

To me personally this is one of my favourite bang-for-your-buck-whiskies in my collection. I'm very happy that I was still able to get hold of two more bottles at the original release price of 79€ a bottle (in May 2016!). This seems to have become quite a rarity these days: Excellent Whisky at an affordable price should be available for everybody! Malts of Scotland is an independent bottler that still makes this happen (very good price/quality ratio) and I'm very thankful for that. Single Malt Whisky shouldn't turn into a privilege for rich people only...

Columbian Coffee

The lion’s share of Glenrothes matures on sherry casks. They are released as vintages. I have tried some 15 so far. But today I will try a teenager from the German Malts of Scotland. It is a sherry hogshead that gave a beautiful dark color to the spirit. Cask strength, of course.

The nose is very aromatic on all kinds of dark and red fruit. Some nuts – make that marzipan. A hint of top shelf Columbian Coffee with dark chocolate shavings in the foam. A fresh touch from a leaf of mint makes my mouth water. Great nose!

Sturdy arrival. Well seasoned. Think cloves and a single chili pepper. The coffee returns from the get-go, as does the dark fruit. Rather candied fruit, now. Mocha appears. Very quaffable without water, but punchy to be sure.

The long, warm finish allows the fruit to reemerge once more, but the spices leave your throat completely dry.

Wonderful sherry monster, but I fear it is very hard to find now.

Bitte kein Wasser!

Roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate and mocha. One whiff of this and my mind immediately thinks Glenrothes. Dried dark red fruits. And also a hint of marzipan and mint.

Taste

First sip, yes, this is Glenrothes.More dark coffee, raisins, mocha and burned caramel. Some cherry syrup, but also spices. Chili and ginger, cloves. Very yummy.

Finish

Peppery, dry and dark chocolate. Intense and long.

Comments

Rich and intense whisky. Tasted blind.
