    (Blind tasting)
Sweet and fruity. Red fruits, red apple, berries, light pepper. But also has something dark.

Tickling something on the tongue but then puts quite creamy in the mouth. The sweetness of the fruit is there again. And a delicious nuttiness. Behind the back comes the peppery spiciness.

Leaves a pleasant mouthfeel with a rather long finish of covered fruit and bittersweet.

    Delicious. Tastes pretty good.

A promising nose quickly leads to a tart, spicy, palate and a yeasty white pepper finish that doesn’t work well for me.

Tart red fruits, vanilla, stewed fruits, light leather
    • Taste

Caramel, spices, apple, ginger, white pepper

      Balsamic vinegar, yeast, apples

As a sample, I have the Arran - The Amarone Cask Finish in a glass. The dram shows up with a golden color and a promising alcohol content.

The Arran presents itself with a sweet nose and a fruity acidity. Pear, verbena, heather honey, a little oregano
    • Taste
      86 86
Oily and sweet with a good pinch of white pepper, cooling mint, honey, pear, yellow fruits, gooseberries, banana
    • Finish
      84 84
Relatively long with sweetness and a nice, fresh fruit

Fairly light, dry and fruity nose.
It's fresh, springtime, young (fine but not complex) there is a bit of wild strawberry / red currants and a floral touch.
The aftertaste brings a little brioche bread with cardamom (spicy / lemon)
    Relatively short finish
but it's still a very pleasant malt as an aperitif.

The nose is a little too outspoken. The rest is quite well done. For a cheap finished whisky, this is good value for money.

Heavy red wine influences make a lot of other nosing notes impossible. It is not bad at all, but lays a bit thick on the red Amarone nose. There is a hint of fresh fruit and a touch of honey in the background, but above all it is the wine which dominates.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sweet and round. A little bitter after a second. A bit of wood shavings, sweet red fruits and quite some other fruitiness and sweetness.
    • Finish
      83 83
Short-medium length. A little dry and dusty. But there is a lot of red fruit influence too.

For a NAS with dubious wine finish this is not a bad product at all. Bottling it at 50% vol. was a clever move by Arran. Still I think this malt lacks balance and it seems to me that the base malt was quite young, as there is not much else to discover apart from those winey notes that are sometimes a bit funky and not quite in tune with the delicate distillery character. Not bad, but not very good either, I'm afraid.

neat: apart from a rather chemical estery berry note it's a bit closed at first. After a while sweet and sour notes pop up which is quite nice. It doesn't feel very balanced, the adstringent winey notes are not very well integrated in my opinion.
with water: mixed berries, lavender, still quite artificial (juicy fruit gum), after a while a funky vegetal note of green peppers.
    • Taste
      82 82
neat: sweet, vanilla, gooseberries, tannins, bitter chocolate and grapes
with water: very similar, but creamier. It's okay, but in my opinion it still lacks harmony.
    • Finish
      81 81
short to medium, not too sweet with the sour and winey notes prevailing. Well...

An interesting mix of the Arran malt profile and the deep notes of amarone wine. As with most finishes its a curiosity, and probably a result of cask scarcity and availability, but as such one of the more successful examples I have come across.
    • Nose
      85 85
Close to the Arran 14, fresh, malty, yeasty, flinty, airborne salt, some ripe red fruit in the background, something slightly sour and then the deep tannic notes of the wine mingles in along with some spices, maybe peppercorn and slight anise.
    • Taste
      87 87
Berries, prunes, sweet and sour, something citric, with a background of bitter chocolate and coffee. Quite full and rich on the palate, not nearly as drying as could be feared from wine tannins. Balance of sweetness with the deeper notes is fine.
    • Finish
      86 86
Quite long, on chocolate and sweet wine. Now the drying of the wine appears, but it fits the profile quite well.
