For a less than ten years of age , I think Arran did quite a good job on this particular Scotch. Nine years of bourbon maturation then another nine months finished with an Amarone Cask. I did really enjoy a dram of this with a crab cake burger with chips in one of the renowned bars in Hongkong.

This is an authentic cask finish! Very interesting meeting between Arran fresh, thin and herbal malt and the king of Italian red wines.
The result is perfectly balanced, even if a bit sharp on the palate. No alcohol edges, despite its 50% abv, but a mild round taste whose fresh notes develop into warming vanilla, chocolate and raisins notes.
One of its highlights is that the wine finish doesn't stand for itself but melts from start to finish in a truly enjoyable malt.

First something Christmassy, then clearly the red wine and herbs. With a little time, dark fruits and some sweetness will also appear.

A promising nose quickly leads to a tart, spicy, palate and a yeasty white pepper finish that doesn’t work well for me.
    • Nose
      85 85
Tart red fruits, vanilla, stewed fruits, light leather
    • Taste

As a sample, I have the Arran - The Amarone Cask Finish in a glass. The dram shows up with a golden color and a promising alcohol content.
    • Nose
      85 85
The Arran presents itself with a sweet nose and a fruity acidity. Pear, verbena, heather honey, a little oregano
    • Taste
      86 86
Oily and sweet with a good pinch of white pepper, cooling mint, honey, pear, yellow fruits, gooseberries, banana
    • Finish
      84 84
Relatively long with sweetness and a nice, fresh fruit

  7. carac scored this whisky 81 points Member Senior

Fairly light, dry and fruity nose.
It's fresh, springtime, young (fine but not complex) there is a bit of wild strawberry / red currants and a floral touch.
The aftertaste brings a little brioche bread with cardamom (spicy / lemon)
    Relatively short finish
but it's still a very pleasant malt as an aperitif.

  8. Defeatless scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

The nose is a little too outspoken. The rest is quite well done. For a cheap finished whisky, this is good value for money.
    • Nose
      80 80
Heavy red wine influences make a lot of other nosing notes impossible. It is not bad at all, but lays a bit thick on the red Amarone nose. There is a hint of fresh fruit and a touch of honey in the background, but above all it is the wine which dominates.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sweet and round. A little bitter after a second. A bit of wood shavings, sweet red fruits and quite some other fruitiness and sweetness.
    • Finish
      83 83
Short-medium length. A little dry and dusty. But there is a lot of red fruit influence too.

  9. CST1986 scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

For a NAS with dubious wine finish this is not a bad product at all. Bottling it at 50% vol. was a clever move by Arran. Still I think this malt lacks balance and it seems to me that the base malt was quite young, as there is not much else to discover apart from those winey notes that are sometimes a bit funky and not quite in tune with the delicate distillery character. Not bad, but not very good either, I'm afraid.
    • Nose
      79 79
neat: apart from a rather chemical estery berry note it's a bit closed at first. After a while sweet and sour notes pop up which is quite nice. It doesn't feel very balanced, the adstringent winey notes are not very well integrated in my opinion.
with water: mixed berries, lavender, still quite artificial (juicy fruit gum), after a while a funky vegetal note of green peppers.
    • Taste
      82 82
neat: sweet, vanilla, gooseberries, tannins, bitter chocolate and grapes
with water: very similar, but creamier. It's okay, but in my opinion it still lacks harmony.
    • Finish
      81 81
short to medium, not too sweet with the sour and winey notes prevailing. Well...

An interesting mix of the Arran malt profile and the deep notes of amarone wine. As with most finishes its a curiosity, and probably a result of cask scarcity and availability, but as such one of the more successful examples I have come across.
    • Nose
      85 85
Close to the Arran 14, fresh, malty, yeasty, flinty, airborne salt, some ripe red fruit in the background, something slightly sour and then the deep tannic notes of the wine mingles in along with some spices, maybe peppercorn and slight anise.
    • Taste
      87 87
Berries, prunes, sweet and sour, something citric, with a background of bitter chocolate and coffee. Quite full and rich on the palate, not nearly as drying as could be feared from wine tannins. Balance of sweetness with the deeper notes is fine.
    • Finish
      86 86
Quite long, on chocolate and sweet wine. Now the drying of the wine appears, but it fits the profile quite well.

    (Blind tasting)
Sweet and fruity. Red fruits, red apple, berries, light pepper. But also has something dark.

Tickling something on the tongue but then puts quite creamy in the mouth. The sweetness of the fruit is there again. And a delicious nuttiness. Behind the back comes the peppery spiciness.

Leaves a pleasant mouthfeel with a rather long finish of covered fruit and bittersweet.

    Delicious. Tastes pretty good.

  15. Thermidor scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

For an inexpensive finished whisky, this one's actually quite nice, and they certainly made a good choice bottling it at 50 %, but like many wine finishes, it's better as an occasional rather than a daily dram.

  17. Totoro scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Brash and energetic, a triad of 1) punchy spirit, 2) sweet and fruity aromas and 3) tart and spiky oak.
The alcohol is palpable, but it fits thee style. You do get the red wine influence on the nose as well as the palate: redcurrant gummies and an appealing dryness that works well with the bitter citrus and quinine notes that are the hallmarks of Arran. Beneath all this lingers creamy yoghurt and wafts of sweet, fragrant vanilla. Good-quality casks, I‘d say, which is not always the case with wine-cask finished whiskies.

Normally I consider Arran a summer whisky, but this expression is more of an autumnal affair, with its stormy, spirity core and warming, woody finish. Not overly complex, but incredibly well executed. A crafty concoction!

    Colour: amber with red notes.
Nose: sweet, muffins, berries, sweet fruits, black currant, spices, oak and red apples.
Mouth: sweet, sweet fruits, pepper, oak, chocolate, dust and berries.
Finish: long, spices, dust, sweet fruits, oak, berries and red apples.
This whisky is very good balanced, sweet and tasty with light wine notes.

I have to run again. Red fruits, some chocolate and neat pepper, not heavy and massive, rather tender and young.
    • Nose
Red fruits (cherries, strawberries), Black Forest cake, crunchy red apple, the alcohol cools the nose, very well integrated, delicate oak, chocolate
    • Taste
Nice sweetness, again the apple, oak, pepper, chocolate, cherry gum, a bit malty
    • Finish
Medium (5/10), with some oak and a hint of apricot

    BOL tasting # 20, sample D

Blind tasting focused on wine finishes.
    • Nose
      88 88
Sweet, raisins, roasted (dark) sugar, rum-like, red fruit but more like cherries, tropical influences (mango?), Hint silage.
    • Taste
      80 80
A lot of sweetness, sticky, plenty of cinnamon, red fruit, pepper.
    • Finish
      80 80
Reasonably sharp sour finish, not the best to be honest, also adds some sweet fruit notes with some spiciness (lots of cinnamon) and again the rum-like roasted sugar.

  21. Calmar scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

An interesting mole, the aroma is well-cut, deep enough and diverse; in the taste of raisin abundance, spices, confectionery tones - and all this is juicy and dense, cool, the finish gently comes to naught on the same raisin background, in my opinion it turned out fine
    • Nose
Restrained, dry, first nose - a juicy grain moonshine; fresh wood, varnish, solvent, plastic, aerosol paint for leather, leather, bread, mineral notes, raw stones, cold oat porridge, raisins, prickly sulfuric-metallic tones, light beer.
    • Taste
Saturated, dense, raisins, spicy oak, dried fruits, again raisins of different kinds, ginger candied fruits, furniture varnish, Koch-i-Nor pencils, sweet confectionery notes, jam, shortbread cookies,
    • Finish
Soft, warming, raisins with light sourness, oak, kvass notes, malt, light tartness of young bark.

    Blindverkostung
    • Nose
Well integrated alcohol, no "sprightly" sharpness; very interesting fruit notes: sweet and fruity rosé wine, strawberry jam, subtle spicy notes probably from the wood, after some time in the glass, the fruit flavors go into a spicy scent of grandma's sweet and sour pickled cucumbers (vinegar, sugar, mustard seeds, spices, a little bit fermented) ; Finally, a lemony-fresh touch.
    • Taste
Strong onset, tingling on the tongue, to a fruity sweetness, but also a bit sour-adstingierend; creamy mouthfeel; becoming drier with clear but not intrusive oak notes; very light woody bitterness and baking cocoa (dry and slightly bitter).
    • Finish
Medium length finish, dry, slightly bitter, cocoa and creamy mouthfeel.

Pretty dry, but really good! Much better than the Port Wine Finish!

Very tasty dram. Consistent and beautifully composed.
    • Nose
Great aromatic start. Strong hazelnuts. A touch of tobacco. Then it gradually becomes sweeter. Plum cake.
    • Taste
Creamy mouthfeel. The hazelnuts and plums are back. The tobacco is missing. For nice chocolate.
      Delicious!
    • Finish
      Medium long, mild and sweet.

Can not quite understand the many praise for this bottling. Who knows Amarone, who runs here in the void. There would have been more in there ..
    • Nose
easy, despite the heavy red wine finishes. Alcoholic, floral, malted yeast notes, cherries and strawberries, sour plums. Some icing sugar. The malt looks quite young overall.
    • Taste
heavy alcohol. Burning pointed, pepper, despite being 50% by no means difficult, rather the opposite. Almost watery. Dark chocolate, cherry jam, with dark maple syrup, bitter walnuts and cocoa powder.
    • Finish
      Remains dusty dry

Body: Lightly fermented, dark fruits, pleasant sweetness, even here the 50% are not noticeable, creamy

Finish: not unpleasant sharpness, medium length

N- Airy and delicate aroma of walnut, butterscotch, baked berries and sweet herbs. Fresh melon, demerara , fig, some ashy and dried sherry hues. Well packed with little room to complaint.P- Leather, dried fruits, spices and sweet peat, roasted coffee bean in the distant. Stiff and muted.

F- Short-medium, spiky wood tartness that gives a good bites of echoing ripe tannin dryness.

Very tasty, that was the favorite of the Arran-Finish-Trio, for formerly 35 € (2010/11) a bargain, even the over 50 € at the end of the 2016 availability were actually still acceptable. I hope there will be another bottling.
    • Nose
intense and full, as a hint of dark cherry / plum spills over, but then cocoa, spice (cinnamon / nutmeg / cloves ... gingerbread?), walnut ... comes "dark" over, slightly dry, but not woody-bitter
    • Taste
intense and full-bodied, dark chocolate, some cherry jam, Sacher cake ... a lot of cocoa, the 50% spicy and spicy, walnut, also reminds a bit of maple syrup
    • Finish
long and spicy, without being too spicy, cocoa, walnut, wood, without becoming too bitter ... beautiful
