[August, 2017]  The devil was merciful with this cask and added just a minor amount of the flavour of hell (others call it sulphur) and here it disguises as sulphured raisins in the nose.  But as soon as the liquid hits the taste buds the unmistakingly and disgusting bad sulphury mouthfeel (to me it is scurfy) takes place.  I know some drinkers like it (especially here in Germany) but I do not.

Too bad as the whisky as such is quite good (e.g. there is a delicious wild mushrooms flavour upon arrival on the palate), so why the hell distilleries like Ben Nevis or Mortlach were not able to install a proper cask management that sorts out these sulphur-treated sherry casks before filling them with precious spirit (like Aberlour, Glenfarclas or Glendronach did - with just very few exceptions)?  Did they simply not care or were they obliged by their management to accept every cask that entered their premises?  To be honest, I call this mismanagement!

So if you like a moderately sulphured whisky this is your dram - all others should shy away and leave this for black-souled Germans...

Very own character with a high recognition value. A heavy, mouth-filling malt.
    • Nose
Even without water a very characteristic nose: full and heavy, almost waxy. Coconut and orange, almonds and walnuts. A few drops of water does not alter the structure of the nose, but only softens the aromas altogether.
    • Taste
Very malty, creamy, lots of caramel and toffee. Dark chocolate, which is not bitter, but more cocoa-flavored. Earthy. Later come dried orange peel and some cinnamon.
    • Finish
      Long and hard.
