  1. Wolfe Tone scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Fruity and floral at first, with apples, citrus, white flowers, minerals, salty sea and leather. The smoke and brine are in the background and give it a nice peaty finish.

  2. Dramming Dutchman scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Very nice dram I got from a friend. Lots of flavours to discover.

2cl at a tasting. the finish reminds me of what could have been had this been a bourbon cask...

Nose: Whiffs of mature peatsmoke, salted buttercaramel, red apples, mango, peach, roasted nuts, a hint of seabreeze, driftwood, Erdal shoepolish and old books. A great nose!

On the palate, the caramel strikes again. Seasalt, brown sugar, limejuice, more smoke, some cashews and grilled meat. Ridiculously good balance between spirit and cask. Also the strength feels perfect for me. The only downside is the relatively short finish.

This is by no means a „modern“ Laphroaig. This is subtle, refined and very well balanced. It even has the appeal of some 60’s/70’s bottlings. I can totally see why a few people are disappointed when they expect a huge TCP peat blast from their Laph. On the other hand, I think Douglas Laing did a great job bottling this particular cask for Feil Ile. Its a nice example of a more refined Laphroaig of the past decades. A blast from the past, so to speak. On par with some vintage sherry matured 70’s Ardbeg I could try. Love it!

I'm a big fan of refill sherry casked Laphroaig but this particular dram doesn't do it for me. It's good, but for a Feis Ile whisky I'd expect it to be better. Compared to 3 other refill sherry Laphros on the table this one had the least sherry characteristics and some things I don't expect from a L.: yeast, thyme and rubber bands on the nose, and mortar on the finish. It is quite peaty on the tongue and the peat develops nicely instead of just punching me, and in the finish I finally find those sherry notes I've been looking for, but the whole is a little lackluster.

    Tasted with samples of HL 11209 (84pts), HL 11151 (83), HL 11642 (83), DL 11151 (83) and DL 10877 (86), plus control drams Ardbeg 10 2016 bottling (85) and Laphroaig 12yo 1996 refill sherry butt (89).

Watery, thin, atypical Laphroaig, little complex

his was a nice one. It was quite a gentle Laphroaig but it certainly has not lost its spark. A great example of the more refined profile Laphroaig can achieve without losing its identity.

Tasted at a Malt Mongers Israel evening and reviewed in my blog:
    • Nose
Farmy. Vegetal Peat. Caramel. Grass. Nutty wood. Rubber. Tar. Salt.
    • Taste
Grassy Peat. Salt. Herbal honey. Lemon drops. Cake. Wet cardboard.
    • Finish
Long. Apples. Paper. Salt. Very medical.

A truly excellent cask. All the features of a classic Laphroaig combined with a rich sweetness for the extra “oomph”. Absolutely brilliant and outstanding bottling.

Laphroaig-tastic! Everything you would expect: medicine, iodine and bandages. Smoldering ashes. Backed up by a very fine sherry sweetness. After a few minutes a light fruitiness comes to light. A bit sour around the edges now.
    • Taste
Sweet and phenolic at the same time. White peaches. Then the peat gets stronger and sharper. Ash. Lemons.
    • Finish
Long and sweet with a gentle peat smoke. Again phenolic. Lemon salt.
