Starts strong, but unfortunately can't keep up the level. No comparison to the 12 year old Sherry Oak with 43%.
    • Nose
      87 87
Takes time to open up. Then msn is rewarded with a nice, round and full sherry aroma. Sherry, raisins, rum stew, cherry, glue.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, bitter, herbaceous, Mon Cheri cherries, walnut, unfortunately a bit thin.
    • Finish
      81 81
Quite flat, glue, a hint of fruit, some nut brittle. Unfortunately disappointing.

    • Nose
A bit sharp in the beginning, let it stand for 10 minutes after pouring. Does this dram get any better?
      Sweet, dried apricots, raisin.
    • Taste
Sweet impression continues and actually the main flavor has been described.
    • Finish
Lasts a little longer than expected, this is a plus!!

The Fine Oak Series is a departure from what The Macallan had been selling (and marketing) for years. Three types of barrels are utilized for aging these whiskies as opposed to using ex Sherry casks exclusively. European and American oak are each seasoned with Oloroso Sherry for two years but they are also using American oak seasoned with bourbon as well.

  11. Nosingbär scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

As so often, appealing flavors, I like the rather dry sherry malt style. But there is a lack of mouthfeel and volume. We're not talking about the price of a no-longer-available bottle of a hype distillery. 83/100
    • Nose
slightly dusty, quite alcoholic at the beginning. Dark, dry sherry flavors. Raisins, coffee, dark chocolate. Shortly thereafter, a light caramel sweetness comes through. The nose looks somewhat reserved, behind an alcoholic veil. It lacks depth, intensity, complexity. After swallowing, the nose becomes slightly fruity (cherries) and slightly minty. Bitter orange.
    • Taste
alcoholic, bitter onset. Then come the raisins, dark chocolate and dried apricots. Caramel, develops from bitter to sweet. With further swallowing, the start is more pleasant.
    • Finish
Raisins and other dried fruits stay in the mouth, while the alcoholic notes almost disappear at the same speed. Citrus notes after a few sips.

  13. dRambo scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

completely exaggerated, for a maximum of 30-35 € beautiful tasty easy uncomplicated tasty malt, which I would open as a large bottle would give me - more I would not value the quality
    • Nose
sweet and sour fruity of apples and grape juice, dried cherries, rice vinegar, vanilla, nut flour, rosehip tea, slightly fermented Sauternes wine, toffee full
    • Taste
initially thin and weak, slightly alcoholic, sweet wine, raisins, some mint, fruity acidity, light creamy bitterness - still pleasant, with each additional sip he gets more volume and has a flattering pleasant spiciness and a sweet fruitiness like wine gums, taste nothing special but nice and sympathetic
    • Finish
short to medium long, not very intense, reminiscent of diluted grape juice, slightly alcoholic with delicate bitterness which gives it a little more volume

  14. rottendon scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

The nose was promising, after he had opened at all, but unfortunately he was disappointed in the mouth. Too thin, too bitter, too boring, too bad! Notes from a blind tasting.
    • Nose
Do I have anything in the glass? Yes, apple juice completely removed, clearly sweet and slightly nutty resonates with. After some life an idea raisins and some chocolate, the apples are completely gone. Coffee is added, nuts, coffee and herbs. Heated, the herbs are largely in the background, baked apples, coffee, only a little chocolate and still nuts, quite wintry.
    • Taste
Very feeble onset, sugary sweetness, light acidity that strengthens towards the back, is easily artificially on the palate. In the second sip an exaggerated bitterness is added, the mouthfeel is completely watery.
    • Finish
In the finish, a quick approach by Lakritze, who brings some deafness for the first time, but seems to have some alcohol, but passes quickly and is slightly labberig like licked Apfelgriepsche. Overall, short. In the second sip, a little more licorice and longer numbing of the tongue.

Warm, fairly balanced and inviting. Lacks a bit of richness but is very drinkable.
    • Nose
Ah yes, can't get around the sherry influence here. Burlap, fresh cherries and sultanas as well. Some milk chocolate. And a hint of copper coins. Mellow and inviting.
    • Taste
A distant salinity, but mainly sherry influence (cherry syrup, dates and fudge)  and spices (cinnamon).
    • Finish
Slightly bitter, but ending on a sweet sherry note. Medium in length.

Sherry nose a little dusty and musty. Mouth powerful, dry, bitter. Less fresh and greedy, less good than Glendronach 12 and 15, less fruity. Dilute it.

  22. bull10298 scored this whisky 75 points Expert Senior

The Macallan, distilled in the heart of Speyside, is one of the great malts of
the world, and is available at a bewildering variety of ages. This is the ?entry
level? expression, famed for its continuing use of ex-Sherry wood. A parallel
Fine Oak range now also exists, which places greater reliance on American Oak.
The nose is sweet and distinctive, with Sherry, toffee and malt. Big bodied and
distinctively Sherried on the palate, but always refined and elegant. The Sherry
lingers long in the finish, accompanied by orange, oak and just a wisp of smoke.
    Deservedly considered a classic

    Another great sherry Macallan.
    • Nose
Lots of sherry, not surprising. Chocolate, dry. A bit tingly, and maybe a little bit of saltiness. Spicy, cinnamon.
    • Taste
Heavy sherry again. Dry, light bitter note. Dark fruits, overripe. Warm cake, fudge.
    • Finish
Long and warming. Drying, with chocolate sweetness.

  44. HunterRomario scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Dried fruits, or perhaps more of forest fruits, raisins, chocolate, but also a more sophisticated floral aroma, I had a moment of brandy / cognac impression. (84 b)
    • Taste
At first, a slightly sweet taste, raisin, but gradually, especially in the touch, it passes into toasty woody dryness. The influence of sherry barrels of Jerez is really strong here, which I like for my lust. (85 b)

    Producer`s Tasting Notes

    Colour: Pale Gold.

Palate: Smooth with dried fruits, sherry sweetness and wood smoke.

Finish: Dried fruits, sweet toffee and a hint of wood spice.

Comment: The flagship of The Macallan range in the UK market, The

Macallan 10 Years Old has become a benchmark for single malt of the

highest quality. The 10 Years Old is matured exclusively in oak sherry

casks from Spain to deliver a deep, rich, deliciously smooth and

well-rounded flavour with a slight sweetness and touch of sherry and

    wood.

This satisfyingly complex Single Malt is characterised by

its rich colour, aroma and flavour with hints of dried fruits, spice and

    chocolate orange.

  46. Jonkers scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Sherry, hay and butter. Sweet, a bit resinous. Also wood and malt.
    • Taste
Light peppery and a very little bit (not more than a hint) of smoke. Pineapple and a bit liquorice.
    • Finish
a very pleasant bitterness. After that sweet (honey ?) and tum-tum. Also candied fruit.

"Matured exclusively in oak sherry casks from Spain to deliver a deep,

rich, deliciously smooth and well-rounded flavour with a slight

sweetness and touch of sherry and wood. Its deep colour is achieved

wholly naturally without the addition of any colouring."

First taste was uninspiring, but if you stick with it it really develops. Very pleasant dramming.
    • Nose
Immediate struck matches. A little fresh paint. Its starting to breathe now. Oranges and a hint of marmalade. Heather flowers
    • Taste
Spicy, but lacking a little in complexity. Oily with vanilla notes. Caramelised oranges.
    • Finish
      Long and spicy. Burnt toast.

  50. alectron scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
nice balance of sherry, wood & malt sweetness, a slight bitter note behind all the sweetness -, a hint of smoke -. (86)

Later: wood turns older, more malty sweetness, seems to tilt over quickly and develop mushroom-y malt notes (82)
    • Taste
      sherry +, sugar-y sweetness o, some cooked vegetables (carrots) o/-, (83)

Later: less sherry, more artificial malt sweetness, chlorine, some cabbage-y notes (74)
    • Finish
more sweet sherry (still sugar-y), some wood with a touch of bitterness, (81)

Later: strange development. Sherry has some serious artificial & plastic notes now after only 15-20 mins which hasn't happen this fast on previous occasions when just sipping it casusally...

This is a nice release from Macallan. The 10 yr old is getting big press because it is like the 15 yr with out the maturity or ABV. I snagged 2 bottles from The Whisky Exchange as soon as they came out with them. Good job Macallan on a fine 10 yr, not better than Glenmorangies, but close.
