Whisky Reviews for Chichibu 2011

13 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.38 points

Very nice for its age, but those prices are ridiculous. For 50 euros I'd buy a bottle.
    • Nose
Peat, malt, fig, vanilla cookie and spice. With water it seems like calvados, but also some gingerbread.
    • Taste
Peat, Printen in chocolate and cherry. With water there's something like chloride initially, but then apple and more spiciness.
    • Finish
Peat, dark chocolate, gingerbread and cherry.

Jim Murray has awarded 95 points to the Chichibu The Peated 2015. "As astonishing as it is beautiful". Pure matter of taste...

  3. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Another ingenious Chichibu where coconut and exoticism combine with dry aromas of smoke.
    • Nose
Very crazy as always with Chichibu, cinnamon stars alternate with fresh piles of autumn leaves, then again coconut cake, peach in between, thyme and rosemary as well, then again Knoppers, hazelnut, ashes in the oven, light malt
    • Taste
Banana powder, campfire ash, very crazy continue, walnut grated, lavender, rosemary, wild garlic and clove on the spice side, but then coconut, the Knoppers again and Raffaelo, honey cream cake (bee sting)
    • Finish
Medium to long, the autumn leaves, cocoa powder now, dry coconut chips, fruit cores, dry

    N-
Strong waves of antiseptic and medicinal. Lush of wet turf, salted
fish and nutty. Nose burning smokes caramel. Once the hits subsides
after calming down, intriguing floral, husky and grassy aromas reveal
    themselves. Awesome stuff.

    P-
Explosive. Hold it on the palate for as long as possible to feel the
heavy dram transform to creamy liquid overtimes. Minty sweet, liquorice
and almond. Full and spicy with choking tar smokes.

F- Velvet smooth, very long and lip burning. Barley sweet lingers. No signs as a young dram. Truly amazing.

Very good but a little tricky find the right amount of water
    • Nose
Smoky, young and strong. With water comes tropical fruit, tall oil, lime
    • Taste
Cool, rolls around and fills up the entire mouth. Sweet smoke, salty, creamy, With water, sweet smoke left, like the salt, soap draws quickly. Light spice, gingerbread, citrus peel.
    • Finish
Medium long creamy sweet smoke, mint With water long, salt again, orange oil.

Note by Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com:

Chichibu 2011/2015 'The Peated' (62.5%, OB) Vorsicht! Caution! Atención! Colour: gold. Nose: some kind of rounded peatiness, perhaps. Maybe a little silverware polish? Antiseptic? Well, it IS antiseptic for sure. Nah, it burns a bit. So, with water: it’s quite hard to tame, finding the right amount of water is difficult. I find a grassy peat, some wormwood, some seaweed for sure, touches of camphor… Sometimes it’s young Laphroaig distilled a long time ago, and sometimes it’s rather young Ardbeg distilled a long time ago. Hints of gherkin brine, green grapefruits... It’s not to be rushed, this baby needs your care and your attention. Like all babies, I suppose… Mouth (neat): it seems that someone smoked marshmallows. Or sno balls. Not a bad idea, that, but this drop is really too strong when undiluted. With water: almost gone the sno balls, and gone the marshmallows. This is young grassy and fattish peat, with a little salt, and, there, a little sake. The mind is weak, isn’t it. Finish: very long, salty, briny, and green. Green tea (my brain says macha), and grapefruits. The aftertaste is rather superbly zesty, but there’s a little gritty pepper from the oak. Comments: not an easy beast. There is some complexity, but every time you find some subtle notes, a wave of young peat just crushes them, which can get a little tiring. But yeah, it’s great, great whisky. SGP:466 - 85 points.

In spite of the young age and the high ABV, it has a surprising roundness and complexity. I found that water makes it more accessible. Yes it is peated, but by no means a peat monster. There is an abundance of fruits, vanilla, saltiness and a few things I can't identify, but they make it even more interesting! All is well integrated.

Kudos to Akuto-san for producing such a young and at the same time mature whisky again. Looking forward to tasting those casks after 10 years or more!

The only negative is the price, but apparently if it's Japanese and it's good, that's just the way it is...

That's good, no question. Even very good. Before various Ardbeg or even some Octomore the Chichibu definitely does not have to hide. Both in the nose, as well as on the tongue an interesting interplay of aromas, the youth of this malts I could not even guess at the beginning. It is a pity that these bottlings usually only exist as investment objects.
    • Nose
Malty-sweetish smoke, almost reminiscent of an Octomore from the Bourbon barrel. Campfire, citrus fruits. After a while, vanilla and a clear cinnamon note (!) Are added. Very interesting and impressive in view of the young age.
    • Taste
Strong start, the cask strength is noticeable. Here, too, offers an interesting interplay of salted caramel sweets, citrus notes and smoke, which sometimes appears sweet, sometimes earthy.
    • Finish
Not surprisingly, the smoke dominates in the long and warm aftertaste, which now looks much stronger and more intense than on the tongue. Very light vanilla and light citrus fruits come to light again. No trace of metallic youth or any miss notes.
