Sulfur, gunpowder, mouse droppings, musty wood spoil my mood in my mouth and especially in the finish. You just want to brush your teeth ... seldom had such a bad springbank. The nose was still really nice

  2. Jarmin scored this whisky 96 points Expert Senior

Dry and strongly spicy, totally intense, reminiscent of old leather notes and tobacco. It tastes more like a very strong 25 year old malt from a very active barrel.
For me one of the best malts I have ever drunk.

What can I say? I like Springbank and I like this one too, in general. The nose is not bad either. For Springbank conditions, however, taste and finish are rather below level and immature.
    • Nose
Springbank character and alcohol is first on the nose, followed by bright sherry aromas, apricot, sultanas, cranberries, sweetened gooseberries, cane sugar, the slight dirtiness, salt and smoky notes of Springbank, which I love, comes out increasingly stronger, then If the fruits are sweeter, darker towards jam, pudding, caramel, just before I was ready to give him water, the alcohol in the nose is gone
    • Taste
Caramel, pudding, clear salt, dryness and now clearly the fino-barrel, very extreme, in conjunction with the dirtiness of Springbanks an experience, subtle sulfur, earth, chocolate, raisin, tobacco, old wet leather, creamy mouthfeel, in the following Swallowing increasingly dominates a kind of immature bitterness
    • Finish
again distinct Fino aromas, tart cocoa powder, old walnuts, grape seeds, raisins, some salt, again creamy and long-lasting, apricot and grapefruit, leather. Here, too, shows in the following swallowing a stronger long-lasting bitterness, which is the Springbank less well.

This jumper from 1996 is extremely dominated by leather flavors and a musty muff. In phases, these intense aromas are almost too dominant for me, giving the Springbank an almost incomparable taste. At the moment I'm still a bit zwiegespalten what I should think of this Springer. Today I award 86 points (22/21/22/21) and I'm looking forward to the post-tasting. Edit: At today's Nachverkostung I feel the leather flavors not so extreme and dominant as the first tasting. Generally, the jumper looks a bit milder today and not quite as "aggressive" as yesterday. After today's Nachverkostung I increase in taste to 22, resulting in 87 points total.
    • Nose
A dry leather note rises subtly tart from the snifterglass. Dark wood tones are immediately mixed with dried berries, decent mold and muff rising from the intensive wood. A few drops of forest honey and dark, almost burned caramel emit a sweetish scent. The leather note becomes more intense, dark sherry aromas try to break through the leather flavor. A dark and old orange aroma is discreetly in the background. Syrup-like streaks have formed on the glass wall and release long and oily drops, dark amber shimmers from the glass, a wonderful sight.
Edit: My impressions today almost coincide with my notes from yesterday. Today I feel the alcohol a bit more dominant and sprittiger, as well as today is a fresh scent of mint in the air.
    • Taste
Tart leather notes let the mouth "contract" at the first sip and leave a harsh and musty taste on the tongue and on the palate. The 54.9% alcohol is also immediately noticeable and make the tongue glow. The leather aroma is intensified on the second sip, a slight hint of sulfur develops, dried and tart berries are shown to advantage. Citrus fruits or, more precisely, grapefruit flavors fight through the extreme leather and are only tentative to the advantage. A pinch of black pepper spreads on the tongue, the sharpness is slow. Edit: Also in the taste confirms my notes, although today I feel the leather note is not so extreme and intense. Fine sharpness heats the palate and a fine leathery aroma exudes a bitter base note.
    • Finish
Leather, leather and leather again! Modrige and musty hints, the grapefruit notes return. Spicy and bitter wood is created, then dominate again these extreme leather notes. Herb and subtly bitter, the Springbank sounds very slow and leaves this musty leathery flavor on the tongue. Edit: Fits like that, but today an intense walnut finish ends the finish!

    The back label says:

This Fino Sherry cask gives an initial burst of refreshing citrus and sweetness which draws you into the dram as the nose develops to reveal rich, powerful aromas reminiscent of toffee, treacle and liquorice.

Delightfully sweet and full-bodied. More citrus and banana flavours explode in the mouth as this massive whisky coats the tastebuds leaving a lingering, sweet finish with just a hint of smoke at the end.

Did they really taste the same whisky as I did?

    Doesn't get better over time
    • Nose
      Woody, leathery, dried fruits
    • Taste
      Mouldy, leathery, dry wood
    • Finish
      Burning and a tad bitter

Like moldy leather boots with a little bitter finish. Actually not really pleasant to drink. Even worse this was one of my first Springbank bottles and for a while it made me think that Springbank is not very good in general. Bad luck!

  11. Lafroy scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Quite gentle, sweetness, flower notes, very delicate. Hints of sherry, dried fruits, honey, nuts and pepper.
    • Taste
Strong expression, but still very sweet. Rich and complex, strong and a little hot. Noticeable honey, plum and apple, as well as hot peppers and dryness. Very well balanced.
    • Finish
Relatively long, sweet, rich and smoky.
