Whisky Reviews for Elijah Craig 12-year-old

This bottle made me really appreciate bourbon, it has much more to offer than the usual cloying sweetness of corn whiskey. Tried several samples of other bourbons beside it (see my reviews), none of them could beat this one.
    • Nose
      83 83
Beyond the usual but aromatic bourbon sweetness (vanilla, raspberry) there's wet wood, caramel, liquorice and sun flower oil.
    • Taste
      85 85
Has a full and slighly oily structure. Juicy citrus fruits, raspberry jam, pineapple. Vanilla of course (hey, it's bourbon), but also soy sauce, coffee and cinnamon.
    • Finish
      83 83
More spicy now (chili's, cinnamon), pineapple on a bbq, sweet vanilla and a bit umami.

I can imagine that the finish in particular shares the tastes. Those who like it especially like it and those who don't like it, it finally pissed off here. Thumbs up from me.
    • Nose
      60 60
Strong like oak and vanilla. A little later sweet tones appear, but somehow not fruity at all. Doesn't smell like 47% at all.
    • Taste
      60 60
Doesn't taste like 47% either. It is quite spicy, but in terms of alcoholic strength I would almost classify it as "mild". In addition, lots of oak and little else. But all of this is very voluminous and a bit sweet. Pure bourbon!
    • Finish
      60 60
It remains a pleasant woody, but not bitter, tone that coats the tongue and the entire mouth. All of that plus nice notes of vanilla.

Pretty good for a bourbon. Nice nose, pretty soft, somehow not very exciting. But put Jim & Jack loose in the bag.

  6. ctu scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Not bad, but the Barrel Proof's balance and strength were much better. Pretty grainy.
    • Nose

    • Taste

  18. St. Pauli scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A pleasant bourbon for a good price. Recommended!
    • Nose
A more mellow and moderately spicy bourbon nose. Juniper, pine needles, pineapple, blueberries, toffeed apple, maple syrup, vanilla, french toast.
    • Taste
Very spicy, both sweet (cinnamon, coriander) and a little drying (juniper, ginger, pepper), toffeed apple, grain, and a hint of vanilla. It's harmonious, pleasant and well-behaved.
    • Finish
Long and spicy, mainly on juniper and pepper, but also with cinnamon. Still a decent amount of grain and a little fruit.

    Pleasantly sweet

Legend has it that the Reverend Elijah Craig, a local pastor from Virginia, is the ‘father of the bourbon’. He is said to have built his distillery in 1789. Today, this bourbon is distilled at Heaven Hill. This 12 Year Old is the best known of the brand. A 12 years old bourbon is rather exceptional, actually. Most bourbons spend less years in a cask.

Quite some fruit (caramelized oranges and fresh apples), caramel and a touch of oak. Brown sugar and vanilla join early. A hint of leather. The whole is well integrated. Nice nose.

Good body with an early spiciness. Black pepper and cinnamon. Then the fruit kicks in. Pleasantly sweet. Toasted oak gives it some depth. Caramel turns into butterscotch.

The finish is rather short with mostly the oak and spices that linger. It leaves the mouth dry.

Those 12 years of maturation have made this nicely round, if you know what I mean. In that sense, this is value for money.

PS. This is no longer available in the States. It was replaced by a NAS version.

Nose: sweet spice, classic bourbon, little sour, smells rather nicely. liquorish. Hint of black pepper.

Taste: Little pepper, vanilla, oak, fudge, 5 spice. Coriander (minced), caramel.

Body: rather full-bodied for a bourbon.

Finish: Some spices, wood, vanilla and caramel-cream.

Price: very reasonable for a 12yo american one.

Presentation: Very nice stopper and I personally like the bottle. For the rest there is not much of the marketing blablabla, so all good to me!

    • Finish
      Long, spicy, warm and dry.
