    I tend to like these cask finishes with Arran. Most of these mature for 8-9 years on 1st fill Bourbon casks and are given a 6-12 month finish. With this one it is 9 + 1.
    • Nose
      Nice full bodied, tasty nose. 50% abv works very good. Sweet but somewhat closed though. I guess a drop of water will loosen things up. Yep it does. More of the fruitiness comes through. Dark fruits, a hint of grapefruit, honey and clearly port influences. Sultana's, plumbs and dates.
    • Taste
      Creamy, soft and thick bodied arrival. It remains very gentle. Again the port casks are clearly present. It is very nice but it tends to be a little onesided at the same time. I can’t really seem to find the 9 years of Bourbon maturation anymore. Port dominates the palate. But it’s certainly not bad, not at all.
    • Finish
      Medium length. Warm and woody.Tannines remain for quite a while at the end. European oak orientated finish. Slightly dry.

    BOL tasting # 20, sample C

    Blind tasting focused on wine finishes.

      First nose has some peatiness in it but a little later smell again is that much less, apart! Then it turns more to sweets with peatiness in the background ... I take out blackcurrants (cassis) and a hidden, modest bitterness, think of grapefruit, sour as gooseberries and a bit of almonds.

      Funny, obviously a peated whisky when tasting and that is clearly present. Again cassis (blackcurrant) and a good amount of pepper, cinnamon, almonds, smoky, little tutti frutti like dried fruit (apricots etc).

      Full peat, sweet, hint smoke, modest pepper. Then more at the end a coin comes up with grastones and a hint of saltiness.

    In the nose better than in the mouth. The departure I like the least.
    • Nose
      Starts quite spicy with hints of vanilla and caramel. Fruity with a little chocolate and oranges. I also like nuts and raisins.
    • Taste
      Fruity with slight hints of dry fruit. Nutty with spices. Slightly bitter.
    • Finish
      Short funds. Malt and slightly dry. Still slightly sweet

    Copy & Paste by Sauternes brother: Tasty, strong, inexpensive (40-45 €), not too complex, not too tasty - fits.
    • Nose
      Without water much spicier and as Sauternes & Marsala, almost zero fruit, with water then only nut / nougat, gingerbread, later lemon & vanilla
    • Taste
      (little) dried fruit, more gingerbread, oak, leather ... and something herb-kräutriges that fits more in the saucepan than in the cake, but I can not say what that is ... but like
    • Finish
      long, chocolate, oak and mystery herbs

    8 years in Ex-Bourbon cask plus 6 month finish in Ex Port Wine. This is a young whisky. Different League compared with the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban.
    • Nose
      Alcohol, Wine, Mint, Citrus, Orange, Plum, Leather, Cinammon, Chocolate.
    • Taste
      Not very sweet for a Port Finish. Some dark fruits (plum, cherry). A little bit bitter from the oakwood. Alcohol again. Definitely (too) young. But careful with adding water. Gets easily drowned.
    • Finish
      Quite long because of the 50 % ABV. Bitter and also spices.

    Good, but the overall experience is a bit artificial as I tend to get more often with younger sweet wine finished whiskies. I'm getting an impression of port and whisky mixed together, instead of the port being really integrated into the whisky. I like the fact that it's bottled at a higher ABV though, pulls this one over the line for me.

    A young, strong, very neat Arran;
    [Color] old gold;
    • Nose
      Spices, oak, citrus fruits (mandarin), sweetness, caramel, nuts;
    • Taste
      diluted: strong fruity onset, tingling, dark fruits (raisins, plums), herbs, spices, oak, slightly out of round;
    • Finish
      long, sweet, fruity finish;
