    For 40%, hands should be beaten off, otherwise a very tasty adult malt, honey alcohols of Balveni would be recognized, a barrel one would drink it ...
    • Nose
      Old spicy tree, blackcurrant, cherry stone, stale raisins, dried leaves, honey and dried fruits, donuts with cinnamon.
    • Taste
      A bit sweet, slightly delicately astringent, with a slight nuance of bitterness. Zhmenya red berries, cherries, currants, jam, a piece of wood.
    • Finish
      Soft and delicate, here you can feel the endurance, pleasant woody astringency with bitterness. Blackcurrant leaves, nuts, tobacco.

    I don't think this on deserves a high price. After 21 years of maturation, you expect something better from Balvenie. Sad to bring this on 40%ABV.

    Not a bad whisky though, simply not worth the money.

      A delicate nose. Quite some hints of straw and grain. Little hint of the sweet and sour port. A hint of ripe apples but overall it gives cornsyrup sweetness.
    • Taste
      85 85
      Sweet and mild. A little thin mouthfeel. Grain notes and a hint of vanilla. In the background clearly the port influences.
    • Finish
      84 84
      Medium length. Sweet and a bit drying. Hint of sawdust and again straw.

    An interesting, very good malt, but still missing something! You do not notice his age! Unfortunately a very high price!
    • Nose
      vigorous despite 40%, Alcohol notes, plums, dark berries, slightly dry, tart;
    • Taste
      very fruity, strong, surprisingly intense onset, plums, currants, dry red wine, wood;
    • Finish
      fairly short dry, slightly bitter finish, some wood;

  7. Dr.Nose did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    • Nose
      Refined, creamy, notes of perfume and fruit (passion fruit), aromas of raisins, honey, marse pain and slightly drying notes.
    • Taste
      Very complex, flavors of toffee, anise and wine, slightly spicy, creamy with notes of wood.
    • Finish
      Long and soft with recurring wine and ripe fruit aromas and soft notes of honey and nuts.

    If you’re looking for titanic punchiness, you’re looking in the wrong place. Bavenie’s 21 year old Portwood is a lesson in sophistication and nuance. I’m still slightly in awe as to how a whisky with a baseline 40% ABV can deliver such a viscous and fulsome mouthfeel. The fact that this whisky then manages to also offer up a near perfect balance between spirit and wood is a testament to its quality. This is equally at home being sipped and savoured as it is being pawed over, studied and thought about. There is however some price variance for this, so do be prepared to hunt around a bit rather than just jumping at the first bottle you see.

    • Nose
      Elegance. Pronounced, fresh raspberries and blackberries come together with all the bees – honey, honeycomb, beeswax and pollen. There’s a certain mustiness here – older whiskies, dusty libraries – it sits very nicely with the fruitiness and honey-elements, bringing yet more sophistication. Bakery notes – tarts, pastries, flans and high quality patisseries merge with gentle grassiness from stems and newly fallen leaves. In the background some sugary stone fruits and a touch of mint leaf. Some sparingly added water brought out the berry aromas even further and added in currants and fruit jams.
    • Taste
      Surprisingly full-bodied for 40% ABV – whilst sometimes that might be a warning sign for a thin arrival, this is far from the case here. Berries and spice – both big and bold. Redcurrants, raspberries, cranberries (all delicious) along with pepperiness and drying (well-judged) older oak flavours. Honey and bees remain a prominent driving feature, providing a broad canvas on which the other flavours are carefully painted over. Notes of leather, tobacco leaf and slight umami flavours (nuttiness) all linger across the palate. Water softens the fruits into real juiciness and brings out further sweetness from toffee and crème brulee.
    • Finish
      Long, fading and drying beautifully with pepperiness and hazelnut brittle.
