From a time when Macallan sold well matured, available and affordable single casks to independent bottlers, not too many years ago.

N: The sulphur lifts to reveal a savoury sherry delight with a tasty oily & nutty cask character. A few descriptors include a dusty touch of carbolic garage oil, metal fillings, an aromatic curry spice & herb-like complex, balsamic glaze, buttery buttercups, magnolia,…. One can try finding that elusive maltoporn brigade number or take it as it is - simply lovely.
T: Even after around 5 years open with the bottle 2/3rds down, this still sparkles and remains surprisingly boisterous - even benefitting from some tempering. Besides the soot, oily linseed, white pepper, dry green notes and aniseed, the sherry really speaks.
F: With a touch of decay sick, we’ve a short light finish on oak dust and sugar icing.
C: The nose stands out, but the whole thing was a real treat. Thanks to Nick.Scores a B+

This one was quite hot at first. But after time in the bottle (about 2 months) the hotness mellowed quite agreeably. Nice spice and takes water well. A rich, full, and powerful Macallan.
    • Nose
Intense stewed red fruit, deep red grape, cinnamon, spiced plums (says so on the description, and they're right!). With water, more deep dark fruit aromas.
    • Taste
Intense red fruit sweetness and spice. Grape, strewed fruit in dark honey, prevalent spice, plums. With water, more intense sweetness and dark fruit, dark honey, and spices kept in check.
    • Finish
Spices linger with rich red fruit and dark honey. Water extends the spice on the medium long finish. A warming, mildly buttery finish.

It's a tenuous link, but is one bovered? Here are three malts i tried recently that are associated by rarity, scarcity and unfamiliarity. I've only previously had two St Magdalene WB, only two single cask expressions of Macallan WB and only one Allt-a-Bhainne WB. Let's change all that.
N: Oily, buttery, briney, rubber sherry
T: Lots of boing, the phenol and more the ethanol strength are formidable.
    F: More boing!
C: Not much SMWS Macallan around anymore, and this was only one of 191 bottles.

    Scores a C

    SMWS Tasting Notes
    Colour: Russet apple
    Flavour: Old & dignified

The panel were transported to a lounge of the Dutch masters.
A still life of dried fruits, orange pomanders and spiced plums set in a wooden
panelled room with piles of leather books. An artist’s palette of drying paint,
linseed rags and turpentine littered the scene. Blackcurrant pastille, and
prune juice held chunky caramelized pork crackling and egg nog characters in
check. With dilution, pomegranate, orange and cinnamon juggled with dark
chocolate and waves of waxy varnish. Glazed and smoked duck with a sticky
orange and roasted onion chutney completed the rich molten experience from this
    much loved distillery.

Drinking Tip: When intensity and riches are required
