I've always really liked the Revival and I still do, but I have the impression that it's mainly the theories about the increasing age that drives up the average score than the actual quality. I have lined it up with a 2012 and 2013 version and found the quality very consistent. Maybe the nose is a little more mature but the differences are rather trivial. I've scored all three at 88 points. If there is any difference in quality, it's so small that it doesn't justify an explosive price increase.
    • Nose
Cherry, prune, raisin, toffee, cookie, mocha, hazelnut and orange. Maybe a whiff of leather.
    • Taste
Raisin, caramel, dark chocolate, prune, orange, pepper, cinnamon and malt.
    • Finish
Cherry, raisin, dark chocolate, orange, coffee and pepper.

If you stocked up on this at the old prices (45-60€ range), you’ll consider yourself a very happy whisky drinker nowadays. Regardless of the whole “higher age than stated” hype, this is just a damn good sherried dram. Truly a benchmark whisky in my opinion and it will undoubtly be regarded even higher in the future. This whisky amongst some others was the reason why I fell in love with sherried whiskies many years ago. Once you become an experienced Whisky drinker, most of the whiskies that you tried many years ago have become quite disappointing but not this one! The nose is much better than most users rate here! It also packs quite a punch for only 46% ABV (which I like!) Enjoyed 3cl at the art’otel in Cologne, Germany on a very sunny day in early May!

I hadn’t realised how many different batches of the pre-Revival revival there were. This batch was dated 27/10/2014.

N: This one is more fruity wax than the previous two, with particular notes around fruit stationery and [cigarette & banana] candy. There’s a richness to this one that comes from a commendable dunnage-y depth, abv strength and some wonderfully active [sherry] casks. Is there bourbon too? From memory. I think the Revival might have been 100% oloroso sherry cask matured in the beginning, but at some point, they began using more fresh 1st fill bourbon casks for finishing as stocks were diminishing. Regardless, in short, a gorgeous nose I want to stay with.

T: Sherried yet with more bourbon-y/dunnage-y action. Looking back to notes I made about this back in the day, I noted ‘Apparently Glendronach has been favouring a heavier use in bourbon casks of late‘ [Nov ’14]. This reminds me in so many ways to Balblair vintages 1990. 1991, even a little of the 1983 and rather like ‘that sherry cask’ 1994 Glen Moray [WLP]. Lovely!

F: Now, much similar to the previous two in flavour profile, yet the finish here is longer. You can’t argue with the calibre of those casks and the presentation.

C:  ‘A must-buy’ says it all though it’s too late now for these versions.
