    Blind Tasting: December 2020
    • Nose
A great nose! Full of red berries and mature plums. Oak wood, raisins, a little coffee and a beautiful sweetness.
    • Taste
Dark chocolate and syrup. Cherries and also caramel. Large body, typical sherry from the 80s/90s? Wonderfully dark and powerful. A little water produces even more caramel and mature dates.
    • Finish
Long, fantastic finish that remains. Sweet syrup and red berries with a hint of chocolate. Some dried fruits and mature raisins again.

Amazing nose, but while there is some complexity on the palate, it really lacks sweetness.

    Review: https://youtu.be/VfTXW55KH5U
    • Nose
      92 92
Loads of dried fruits, dates, figs, raisins, but it's also fresh, vigourous. Lemon oil, a hint of exotic fruits. Dark chocolate, coffee, light hint of furniture polish, leather, tobacco leaves. Pineapple juice, cherry jam, Italian amareno cherries, brown sugar, old wooden cabinet. Really nice.
    • Taste
      85 85
The onset it really different from what I expected. Medium alcohol bite with some black pepper warmth, but coming from the nose there is a surprising lack of sweetness, it's very dry, and also quite bitter, lots of oak, charred wood, a bit of ashes, freshly snapped twig juice, and at the same time mineral wet rock notes. Feels like a different whisky altogether. Leather and tobacco leaves, but not even an inkling of sweetness to be dug up. Second chew shows smoke developing, some cigar, pipe tobacco pouch, notes of dried figs, but without the sweetness. Slowly turning into fig jam, just a little bit better. Third chew is drier and fuller, develops more heat and a lot more smoke, quite nice, but apart from a little bit of fresh ginger and peppermint, the only new note here is sulphur. Now it's dry, bitter, and sulphuric. A shame.
    • Finish
      88 88
Lots of smoke, some ginger, very light mint, a lot of oaky notes, tobacco leaves, some dark chocolate, very strong espresso. A bit of cucumber showing up later.

Glenrothes 24 yo 1990/2015 (55.7%, Cadenhead, Small Batch, 966 bottles) Four stars

Let's see if once again, a real small batch (not 30,000 bottles) beats single casks because of some additional complexity.

Colour: coffee. Nose: coffee. I'm not joking, this reeks of coffee (with schnapps), with also a good deal of gunpowder and flints. Quite a lot of burnt black raisins too, very dark caramel, then black tobacco (Gauloises) and touches of leather and perhaps fennel.

With water: burnt cardboard, black cigars (maduros, or this funny cigar made in Italy called Toscani - kills a rhino)... In short everything's quite black.

Mouth (neat): heavy, bitter in a good way, very burnt, with many spicy fruitcakes and loads of muscovado sugar. Cloves and tar. As 'black' as it gets.

With water: becomes kirschy and funnily spicy-fruity. Mulled wine, more burnt sugar.

Finish: very long. Coffee-slivovitz. Comments: a very extreme one, perhaps for lovers of sherry monsters only. Some sides remind me of the old Macallans Cask Strength.

    SGP:462 - 87 points.

    Nose:

very strong influence of sherry oloroso, notes typical for sherry cask Glenrothes from the 90s, that is cherries in chocolate, raisins, everything very harmonious, marzipan, completely covered alcohol you can smell it without the feeling of sharp alcohol, feels like an old library, tobacco, leather

    Taste:

Just wow! How much is going on here! very oily, cherries, milk chocolate, then came out more dry notes, heavily tobacco, coffee, again library, leather,

    Finish:

long, warming, a little sulfur comes out, chocolate again

    Score:

really a great whisky, multidimensional, not obvious, the best Glenrothes I've ever tasted - 92/100

Surely a very bold and ferocious sherry cask with all the flavours you expect from it. I hoped for more creaminess and less bitter fruit. Also the age didn't show itself. Still good, but not the stuff of above 90's.
    • Nose
The looks of the bottle, the first whiffs out of the bottle. Love this over the top sherrycask.
Coffeecandy, burned mathes and a little gunpowder. This will fade after some time. Lots of cherries, cranberries and chocolate. Prunes with some walnut. Still there's a lot of citrus fruit that turns it away from cream and more into bitter fruit with nutmeg.
    • Taste
Not so elegant even after all those years. Dark chocolate with chilli in it. Marzipan or just cacao. Also a meaty side to this sherry. Beef jerky and leather. Blood oranges, demera sugar, Grapefruit and lemons
    • Finish
Lemon skin, some oranges and bitter woodspices, cloves and ginger. Mocca with some leather.

Completely run over by the sherry, no question. But for a perfectly balanced and great dram!
    • Nose
Fatty Oloroso sherry, full of raisins, tobacco, you can smell almost the drought, wet wood, fruit bar with wild berries, blueberry pie
    • Taste
Red fruits without end, raisins, wet tobacco, the alcohol taps only very subtly, the dryness comes up slowly, wonderfully creamy, sugar beet syrup
    • Finish
Nice warmth, slightly bitter, but very interesting at the same time, less dry than feared, raisin syrup, lots of chocolate behind

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Sherry, sherry and sherry again. Mountain-like dark fruits seek the way out of my glass. Rumrosines, plums, dates and figs provide an intense sherry board. Dark bittersweet chocolate, old furniture, leather, Christmas spices, strong pipe tobacco and spicy oak wood notes complete the voluminous aroma cargo, which almost overwhelms my nose. In the background lies a handful of sweetened cherries in all this heavy concealment. A subtle note of sulfur settles like a gentle veil over the aromas. The alcohol content of almost 56% is very well integrated.
    • Taste
The Glenrothes is powerful brushed on riot. Pleasantly oily, the wolf lays in sheep's clothing in the oral cavity, before after about 15-20 seconds, a noticeable astringent sensation on the palate begins. The heavy sherry impression, which I could already perceive in the nose, now hits full. Intense and powerful sherry aromas immediately conquer the entire oral cavity and ignite an aromatic detonation. At the tip of the tongue it tingles clearly at the first sip, reminiscent a little of ginger sharpness. The second and third sips make the feeling noticeably more pleasant. Plentiful dark, cooked fruits manifest the flavor foundation. Rumrosines, plums and dates I perceive again. Old furniture, reduced gravy, leather, spicy oak and dark chocolate, with cocoa content beyond the 70% mark, are present. A double espresso puts the crown on the Aroma Hammer. Also in the taste I register a sulfur note, which drives behind them "mischief". An experience - nothing more, nothing less.
    • Finish
Long, warm and intense. Plenty of tannins and ginger come to the fore and push the intense fruit notes into the background. Leather, tobacco, dark chocolate and espresso are present for some time. With a noticeable dryness and pronounced (spicy) bitterness, the malt gradually fades out.

Bham, yep this is a very powerful, potent yet well balanced and hugely lovely whisky. Subtle does not belong in the description of this whisky. Its big and bold, but ohh so succulent. It needs quite some time to open up and please don’t add any water unless you are really fond of overwhelming bitter tannins. This dram can keep me occupied, and quite happily so mind you, for quite some time. It has great complexity and lovely depth of flavour.
    Damn this is good.
    • Nose
A rich, elegant, sweet, savory and well balanced whisky with aromas of slightly sour sherry, brown sugar, leather, tobacco, milk chocolate, Manuka honey, lemon zest dried fruits (plums, cherries, figs, raisins), coffee, mocha, bramble jam, gooseberries, tea, rosewood, sweet pipe tobacco, bitter orange marmalade, treacle, apple, pear, nectarines, sulphur, hint of honey glazed roasted ham, subtle mineral tones (flint), baking spices, fennel seeds and creamy oak.
    • Taste
A sweet, fruity, rich, powerful and well balanced whisky with aromas of lush and powerful sherry, green apples, big portion of tannins, brown sugar, dark honey, black tea, grape seeds, dried fruits (plums, figs, dates, raisins, apricots) cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, black pepper, lime, lemon, bitter orange marmalade, earthy tones, cigars, cranberry jam, rosewood, mahogany and strong dry oak.
    • Finish
A long, warm and dry finish with aromas off massive tannins, grape seeds, chili, ginger, brown sugar, tea, coffee, chocolate, dried fruits, spices, toffee and spicy dry oak.

This kind of leather note is indeed a hint for a bit sulphur. However, this is not a big issue in my mind. The basic nature of this whisky is rather oaky bitter which is the bigger issue for me.
    • Nose
Rich and powerful sherry nose, oaky, meaty, subtle sweetness, not so fruity, little bitter note

    • Nose

But there is some sulphur I cannot pass by ...
To me this is a false note unfortunately ...
    • Taste
Again burnt wood, quite hot, red berries, citrus notes, espresso grounds, some maltiness, dark.

      Again the s-notes appear ...

Same dark color and almost same strength as the Glenrothes 1980 single cask 17563 which means it's one of the darkest ones available. The characters of both are very similar but the Cadenhead is a tad more dry and bitter in the finish and a bit more meaty with a touch of leather.

It's OK to add quite some water to reduce the burning and get more aromas out of it.

    • Nose
Dense and heavily sherried. Liquorice, dates, raisins, prunes in
Armagnac, followed by dark chocolate and a slight whiff of sulphur. Rich
      and deep.
    • Taste
Oh yes, you get the full aroma spectrum promised by the nose. Big, thick
sherry, rum soaked cherries, dates and prunes with a hint of marzipan.
Bitter notes of dark chocolate and Sevilla orange peel are well
integrated and balanced with the fruity sweetness and completed by nutty
      flavours.
    • Finish

Nose: wow - full of sweet sherry. Plum must, raisins and rum punch. a bit earthy fresh wood note, tobacco leaves, dark chocolate and coffee beans in the background. Despite the many dark notes in the core of the whisky, the sweet (PX?) Sherry always remains dominant.
Taste: Holds your nose! Very dark fruit berry compote, dates and sulfurized raisins, the oak needs a bit until it comes through and brings out a nice dark chocolate and strong coffee. The finish is then long with a spicy rum sweetness, a slightly sulphurous and fleshy woody notes and aromatic coffee / tobacco notes.
Okay, that's a sherry bomb. You have to like it but when you look at it the whisky is almost perfect. The alcohol and Brennereicharakter go into the sherry but completely.

Nose: Thick sherry and despite the strength no alcohol. Rum pot, raisins and other dried red fruits. In addition to dark chocolate, cherries and the smell of cigars in the humidor, very pleasant. With some time, the fruit decreases, the chocolate is stronger and mild coffee aromas are added, cocoa and sweetened cappuccino.

Palate: Even stronger sherry, very fruity and deep, occupies the entire mouth. Dried fruits in dark chocolate, marzipan, raisins, cranberries and currants, maybe even tangerines. The cocoa is then bitter, the coffee comes back, but rather as an espresso, quite strong. The oak wood brings a nice and slightly bitter spiciness, pepper and even some gunpowder.

Finish: Very long and yet pleasantly round. The fruitiness comes back to the beginning again, but then turns quickly into coffee chocolate and nougat chocolates. Then add the seasoning, pepper, chili and red pepper. I also find tobacco again. The oak lingers longer.

Conclusion: Boom - and still a really great Sherrymalt. Dark, intense, multi-layered and without junk notes. Top whisky!

    94/100 points (tasted 2015, approx. 125 €)
Thanks to Cadenhead`s Berlin for the rehearsal!

A true sherry monster that shows enough complexity and maturity to rise way above your average sherry bomb (a'bunadh or Glendronach CS). I absolutely adore this whisky.
    • Nose
Very powerful sherry, sweet and dark. Red berries, plums and black berries with cocoa powder, coffee and polished leather. There is a hint of sulphur. It is very reminiscent of the Glenrothes 1990/2002 W&M, except a little better integrated and more powerful.
    • Taste
Dried dates, cherry syrup and dark chocolate. Some brown sugar and caramel as well. No sulphur here and it has a pretty meaty mouthfeel to it.
    • Finish
Sweet (golden syrup) with a hint of smoke. Long and slightly dry.

    … had to reduce my 92/100 rating;

sulphur became more and more with the months … - tragically !!!

    Now maybe 89/100.

Great Glenrothes, great cask, great selection!
    • Nose
Very powerful sherry influence. At first the notes of dark fruits dominate with sultanas, cherries, plums, dates covered with a layer of old leather being all over the glass. After 30 mins, the notes of chocolate and coffee come through and steal the show. Great.
    • Taste
Thick, oily, extremely dense sherry. All that you could expect from an old sherry bomb at cask strength. All the notes from the notes are present in the taste without any rubber, nail polish remover or suphur, pure sherry madness.
    • Finish
Long, mouthwarming, a bit spicy with bitter chocolate playing the major role.

Obviously, impossible, blind, to guess that it is a Glenrothes. Sherry, at this level, hides all traces of specificity that a Speyside distillery could have. This whisky could also have been a (very) good Glendronach, for example. All that matters in this kind of whisky is that it is balanced and the quality of the slaps it sends. Mission accomplished here!
    • Nose
Houla hula hula, it sends directly heavy! A hyper sherry nose! Leather, tobacco, black fruits (plum, blackcurrant, blueberries), raisins, brown sugar, gingerbread, dark chocolate with orange ... Everything is there! It's rich, powerful, taking. A nose like I particularly like.
    • Taste
In the lineage of the nose. Dried fruits, candied fruits, black fruits, spices do you want here, the hull of hazelnut, chocolate, black tea, tips of tobacco wood, liquid caramel ... A good big sherry mouth well flowing and grip.
    • Finish
Long. The molasses side of the sherry persists to cling to the walls of the mouth. A woody drought attacks the palate, while peppery spices tingle on the cheeks and tobacco is more present.

Great Sherrybomb... in the best of the words meaning! Recommended!

Another fantastic sherry-bomb from the folks at Cadenheads (remarkably similar to the heavily-sherried Highland Park they released a year or two ago)! Very heavy sherry on the nose, with loads of dark, sweet, rich fruits (berries, sultanas, pears etc) alongside meaty ham, soft oak and a hint of coffee. Great stuff! Similarly huge on the palate, with the sherry being almost chewy. A hint of something spicy and peppery drifts through after the initial sherry 'hit', but with plenty of sweet fruits alongside it to keep things in balance. The spirit does struggle to come through at the start, but with a bit of time it opens up beautifully. A bit dry on the finish, with the sherry never losing its dominance. Great cask selection again from Cadenhead, and bottled at a fantastic age.

    Cadenhead's official tasting notes:

Nose: Huge sherry; very meaty with liqueur chocolates. Roasting pan juices with figs and poached pears.
Palate: More massive sherry - grab a knife and fork for this. Lots of marzipan, quite creamy like a sherry trifle and then more meatiness grows.
Finish: Huge sherry tussles with dried oranges, soft black pepper and a little rubber. One for the hardcore sherry fans.
