Conclusion: round and pleasing entry-level whisky that lacks a certain complexity
    • Nose
Apple, malt, fruit basket, oranges, some caramel and some subtle oak notes and some chocolate
    • Taste
sweet apple, caramel, oranges, hardly any wood
    • Finish
quite short, apple, chocolate, spicy oak without bitterness

A terrific smell gives way to an interesting taste. However, the finish leaves a feeling in the mouth that I could have done without. Pity! So I don't really warm to this whisky.
    • Nose
Wine gum sweetness, perfumed, dessert wine, grapes, pears, has something of a tangerine wooden crate with a scruffy-mold tangerine as a stowaway, light smoke, sandalwood, patchouli, violet, vanilla, very complex and pleasant variety of aromas
    • Taste
Flowery-sweet, plum in marzipan, becoming spicier, slightly alcoholic cherry in combination with dark chocolate (''Mon Chéri''), somewhat artificial-looking liquorice stick with sugar icing
    • Finish
Rather short, quite dry, sweetish vanilla with light smoke, dried apricots, rose water, producing a perfumed numb mouthfeel, like a mouth full of deodorant, lavender, cloves, pina colada

    - a 12-year-old single malt, which unfortunately is far below
    is my expectations
    - if I have "only" one single standard bottling
the market, then it should be more than
    be below average....
    - compared to many other 10 and 12 standards
    therefore rather disappointing
    • Nose
Fresh and floral, green apple (Granny Smith), malt, pleasant, light nose
    • Taste
fruity strong start, unfortunately not much comes then, quite one-dimensional, slightly fruity and strongly sloping
    • Finish
      short pale or flat finish ;
short, slightly sharp aftertaste (I still felt a rather unpleasant sharpness in the aftertaste, other standard bottlings with 12 years didn’t have it)

  8. DramALife scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

    S 6
Very smooth on the nose with no alcohol spikes. An entry-level whisky with limited complexity and layers. Final try after 6 months to empty the last two drams.

[78-82] Good buy when I've extra money to spend, most whisky stays within this band.

    N 25
Vanilla. Pear. Creamy butterscotch. Milk toffee. Very mild citrusy behind.
Final try: Sour apple juice. Vanilla. Mildly spirity.

    P 24
Smooth mouthfeel. Gummy bear sweetness. Some delicate oak spices behind the sweet. Very mild peat behind.
Final try: Smooth vanilla & pear. Mildly peated oak spices (black pepper, nutmeg) lingering.

    F 23
Short, woody finish. Maltiness lingering. Subtle peat underpins the finish.
Final try: Short, woody dry finish. Nothing else.

    Gold color. Light oily.
    • Nose

Feel the influence of Sherry Oloroso barrels. Dried fruit, but not sweet, dry. A bit of a cellar aroma, but quite pleasant. Maybe light tea notes, dry and astringent. A pinch of spices. Cinnamon. Maybe some citrus underneath.
    • Taste
      81 81
Quite dry, bitter, but in a pleasant way. Not on tap. Dried fruits. Spices. White pepper. A pinch of cinnamon. Light barrel notes. Slight bitterness from Sherry Oloroso. Traces of cocoa. Traces of fresh fruit underneath.
    • Finish
      83 83
Bitterness from Sherry Oloroso. Cocoa. Dried fruits. Deep underneath notes of fresh fruit. Medium-long finish. Spices. White pepper and cinnamon. Maybe nutmeg.

    Royal Lochnagar 12yo, 40%.

    Dull golden orange.

Aroma is orangey, orange blossom, fragrant and citrussy, petals. Good aroma for sure. Very cohesive. A touch muted but what's there is pleasant. ‘Delicate’ is probably the best word.

Taste is very easy, quite light and subtle on the palate, well-rounded. Fresh and citrussy, delicate floral and fruity esters. It doesn't come across as underpowered at 40%. This would be an amazing beginner's whisky. Lovely - and just the easiest spirit you could drink. Perfect for the beginning of an evening, or a summer's day whisky. 3.65/87

N: Rather lemony, in a Lagavulin type of way, additionally it’s somewhat thin and resinous. Coincidentally, this 12yo and the Lagavulin 16yo stand side-by-side in the distillery shop.
T: An easy savoury harvest-like soft grassy dram.
F: Bready and faithful to the barley beer-based spirit.
C: It’s fine but standard – bog-standard [much like the tour].

So, what have we got here? The smallest distillery of Diageo's portfolio, a royal warrant dating back to 1848, and one of the key contributors to JW Blue Label. The nose starts off with cloudy apple juice, fruit salad and maltiness before hints of caramel and sawdust creep in. More apples follow on the palate (apple puree and pie), and there is a delicate touch of oak, ginger and cloves. Easy, short but without any off-notes, the finish does not leave much of an impression. With that being said, I would still prefer Royal Lochnagar 12 over JW Blue Label at any time.

  22. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Easy Drinking. Cooked apples, malt, some toffee and a distinctive oak note that tastes like 12 years. No one to mind, but consistent and with good PLV.

  23. mothers_finest scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

And again such a whisky where the low price is the fatal. All those experts who, given the price, can not attribute a fair rating to the whisky, but can not really explain why. Certainly not the most complex whisky on earth, a slightly sweet nose, vanilla, some malt on the palate and a touch of oak spice on the finish are just not extravagant; but a malt that does not hurt at the price and is certainly better than his reputation!

Deductions are due to the coloring and the chillfiltration.

    • Nose
Fruit cake with enough spice dose. Dubovost, nuts, scent of stables. Unfortunately, spice is a bit overtaking everything else.
    • Taste
Dough, dough, malt, melt, milk tea, cream, fruit tones and raisins, but not very pronounced,. Again quite quite spicy
    • Finish

Very nice standard for a fair € 32, wrongly often overlooked, I drink gladly again and again.
    • Nose
in the first few minutes a nice fruity gummy bear note, then down to earth, malt, some milk chocolate, shortbread
    • Taste
mild and sweet, malt, nougat, a little cocoa ... after a while on the tongue white pepper and light bitterness
    • Finish
medium, cocoa, pepper and a small piece of wood

  31. xFabe did not rate this whisky Member Senior

I did not expect much. I have gotten a very pleasing everyday dram. The nose caresses and in the mouth becomes a bit stronger (spicy). I like these whiskys! The 40% barely disturb, contrary to expectations.
    • Nose
Exotic fruit, star fruit, honey banana, lighter sherry influence, slightly sour raspberry, a very sweet milk chocolate, no trace of alcohol, honey cereals, some freshly cut grass
    • Taste
Less sweet than in the mouth, for spice, some ammonia, cereal notes come back (rye), some peppery, fundamentally different than the nose but definitely not bad
    • Finish
Some oak, a little caramel, very pleasing, but also quickly gone, a trace of hay remains

    2nd Tried:- Jan 2017

N- Shy and soft, but much too soft and mellow at this age. Still
pleasant, nutty and biscuity with buttery notes, quite peppery, but
can't stop thinking of a dried hollow barrel.

P- Much better on the palate, milky, balance with upfront wild notes of peppercorn, heat-y, medium sweet, nice and warm.

F- Medium, sour fruits coating. Enjoy the warm heat of peppery notes that lasts.

First Tried:- Sept 2015 / Weighted Rate:- 77pt
Nose:- Fresh and leafy, attractive floral paired with moist wood. Nutty and buttery with tobacco and soft smoke.

Palate:- Creamy, underlay with some citrus elements, peels, lightly bitter and raw. Touch of sweetness.

Finish:- Medium - long, clean, smooth and dry. Attractive floral lingers.

    Good entry level dram.

    • Taste

Nose: Woody, herbal, light fruity, hint of sherry. Quite some wood influence, which I find rather pleasing, but not much dept.

Taste: Sweet, middle of the road. Sweet toffee. Fruit infused fudge. Green apple.

    Body: light-medium.

Finish: short and light Caramel, vanilla, wood.

Price: middle of the road. For an entry level whisky not bad, but there must be very good nice and mature ones out there.

    Presentation: Classic and decent.

Comments: This is a whisky who doesn't have enemies. Everyone will love it, no body will dislike it. So good introduction whisky.

The ‘Science of whisky’ masterclass [TWE Show Oct ’15] saw Ian Buxton and Professor Paul Hughes explore how whisky is made, how differences between distilleries affect the spirit and the science behind those changes. Focusing on entry level whisky from Dalwhinnie WB, Mortlach WB and Royal Lochnagar WB, we had a rare chance to try the distillate, a young/maturing malt and the final product to be packaged and sold as NAS whiskies, for Dalwhinnie and Mortlach at least.
    Royal Lochnagar [new make spirit]
N: Beer/aldehyde notes, [but less than the Dalwhinnie new make WB]
    T: Big
    F: Not yet
    C: Neutral
    Royal Lochnagar 4-5yo [abv unknown]
N: Well rounded and 'searchable' - something between onion rings and bacon frazzles.
T: Same as on the nose. Aside from the smoke its a neutral profile, awaiting info
    F: Fine
    C: Just fine
    Royal Lochnagar 12yo 43%
    N: Good age
    T: Soft and rounded
    F: Relaxed and soft
C: Perfect in its class but very little interest to anyone looking for more than an easy gulper. Water kills it and Winter’s Gold WB has the edge.

Royal Lochnagar 12 years, 40% alc. original bottling
    Region: Highlands, Scotland

Nose: apple juice, slightly sweet apple juice. After a few minutes he gets drunk, alcohol comes along, it smells like cider. In addition, light tones of caramel and toffee, malt, summer meadow and vanilla. Somehow also charred wood. Overall, however, very light, a little sweet and flowery.

Palate: Apples and grassy aromas, almonds and Brazil nuts. A little honey, vanilla and oats. Quite away bitter caramel, which has been heated too long. Again, rather light, only a little oak.

Finish: Medium length, drier than the palate. They are stronger than before, and the malt sugar is stronger.

Conclusion: To wegschlabbern, simple and beautiful, definitely underestimated.

    84/100 points (tasted 2015, approx. 30 €)

The nose offers toffee, along with some green notes of freshly-sawn timber and a
discreet whiff of smoke. The palate boasts quite a complex blend of caramel, dry
Sherry, fresh fruits and spice, followed by a hint of liquorice before the
    slightly scented finish develops.

For a standard (supermarket) whisky amazingly good. No high flyer, but beats me the other candidates from this category loose. For example, a Glenlivet / -fiddich 12, Balvenie 12, HP 12 and others can not quite keep up. Am surprised and did not really expect that. Too bad that here for cooling filtering and the dye is used, the 40% Alk. But no watery feeling arise.
    • Nose
fresh sherry; red juicy crisp apples; some fresh red berry mix; slightly nutty; a little summer flowers; In between, some plum liquor appears again and again; a trace of toffee and cocoa; After the first sip, you get the feeling of banana split and minimal orange oil

This was one of those malts that gets better as you make your way down the bottle. I am trying to have as many different types of malts as possible so this was always on my list. I was pleasantly suprised at how good it was, not top draw but second draw down.

This was a wedding  anniversary present of my wife. An above mid table malt of it's kind.

Quite a variety here caramel, golden syrup,  fresh fruit, cereal, barley and white grape.
    • Taste
Toffee, barley and raisin with a hint of smoke and a little spice.
    • Finish
A medium fruity finish with barley on the death.

After the royal family acquired nearby Balmoral as their Scottish country home, Queen Victoria developed a taste for this Aberdeenshire whisky. Rich, with flavours of malt loaf, fruit cake and spices.¡± Michael Jackson, whisky writer and expert.

Not overly complex. It is a generous, kind whisky for calm moments.
    • Nose
Starts with a tangy impression, a slightly mineral hint comes to nose. Opens up on white fruit (pear, apple), then floral sweetness appears. Ends on a touch of boiled candy.
    • Taste
Light, fresh. Very sweet. The candy comes back right away for much pleasure. Fine pepper coats the mouth and warms it up. Maltiness happens eventually, with fresh cut grass and heather.
    • Finish
Medium long, the warmth from the pepper stays quite a while. A lasting sweet and malty impression.

Malty, fruity, spicy, cake-like. After dinner.
    • Nose
      Big, with some smokiness.
    • Taste
Light smokiness, restrained fruitiness, and malty sweetness.
    • Finish
Again, dry smokiness and malty sweetness. The first impression

is of dryness, then comes the sweet, malty counterpoint.

A favourite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, being conveniently

situated close by Balmoral Castle. Royal Lochnagar was originally a key

ingredient in VAT 69, but most production is now for single malts.

  71. Feusi scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Sweet with a little linseed oil on the nose, gently nutty tones in the palate, with a medium long finish. With its heather-like smoke slightly bitter aftertaste, a typical Highlander.
