very complex, round and balanced, wonderful malt, excellently coordinated aromas. I like it better than the 2016 18 year old
    • Nose
Nutty, fruity, slightly sweet with caramel and vanilla, then comes spicy oak with some sherry, almonds and a touch of honey
    • Taste
Sherry, spicy oak, a bit sweet and fruity, then comes caramel, ginger and becoming a little hotter
    • Finish
Sherry and fruit, sweet, spicy oak, nutty, mostly hazelnuts and almonds. Long and warming

So certainly not a bad malt. However, I expected a little more maturity at 18 years of age. The 17-year-old, for example, was more balanced.
    • Nose
Fairly light fruit. Green to yellow apple. Nashi pear. Some sugared rhubarb. A good splash of citrus. Vanilla. Floral tones. The wood notes are rather fresh, but they still bring some spice.
    • Taste
Pretty sweet at first. Agave thick juice. Vanilla Semolina Pudding. Lime blossom honey. Then it tingles and effervescent powder comes to mind. It then becomes drier and the wood comes to the fore. oak seasoning. Some ginger. orange zest.
    • Finish
Some more effervescent powder. Citrus-heavy tonic water. Green tea.

  5. Saftkenner scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Very nice and harmonious bottling with ripe, light fruits without fermented notes. A dream with (then) a good price-performance ratio.
    • Nose
      88 88
Lovely, harmonious nose. The alcohol is not noticeable. Summer flower meadow, vanilla, toffee, light grapes, ripe wild strawberries, light citrus notes, milk chocolate, very fine oak spice. Hand-warm, very slightly tropical notes such as pineapple, papaya and passion fruit are added.
    • Taste
      88 88
Nice peppery start. Slightly oily. Lemon, oak, apricots, marzipan, caramel, crumble cake, pear, mango.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-long finish. Vanilla, marzipan and apricots.

    2017-09-23:
A good representative in the cohort of regular 18-year-old whisky.
    • Nose
Mint, ascorbic acid, citrus, marzipan, black bread croutons, paint theme, apple peel, creamy iris, notes of violet, barely mineral, cherry, vanilla, floral, berry sour, cottage cheese, candied fruit, soap, fragrant herbs, a hint of garlic, apple jam.
    • Taste
Citrus, berry jam, apples, bread crumbs, pear (duchess), delicious.
    • Finish
Jam, citrus, apples, smooth aftertaste, pear, a little oak, violets (soap), a little short for this age.

    (blind)
    • Nose
Somewhat sweet, nice maltiness, lemon, vanilla, some dry wood, slightly dusty, honey, heather, somehow waxy
    • Taste
Briefly sweet, then briefly cough syrup, in the sense of strong herbal notes, again honey, apples, light citrus fruit, menthol, somehow velvety / waxy mouthfeel
    • Finish
The waxy, sweetish remains for a long time

  11. Kovalyoff scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Aroma: pleasant malt, with a fruit base, sweet, fresh notes of mint and lime, honey and meadow herbs.
Taste: pleasant, firm, astringent, with a drop of varnish
    Finish: soft fruity pepper aftertaste.
The sherry barrel worked well without drowning the character of the malt.

Quite good whisky, feels much younger than 18 yo. Although it declared as ex-sherry, you can barely feel (and see due to its very pale colour) sherry profile. So probably it was matured in ex-ex-ex-ex…-sherry casks. However, it’s quite balanced, pleasant and easy-going with obvious coastal influence.
    • Nose
Light, slightly sweet, fruity (pears, green melon), vanilla, buttery and light wooden notes, a bit grassy, hint of barley
    • Taste
Spicy (peppers, ginger), slightly sweet, oatmeal, some mineral and coastal notes, wet stones, freshly sawn wood
    • Finish
Dry, warm, spices, raw mushrooms, malty and salty notes

  15. Calmar scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Interesting whisky, young enough, balancing between the bourbon and wine profile, diverse, light, but full.
    • Nose
Open, dry, processed dry board, herbs - fresh and dry; grain, light vanilla and citrus notes, wilted grapes, ether, carpentry workshop, eucalyptus, floral shades.
    • Taste
Saturated, dense, fresh wood, grain, bark, raisins, nuts, grapes, grapefruit crust, ginger.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, sweet and sour, berry sour, jam, a little cocoa and citrus, viburnum.

A classic representative of a whisky without flourishes. Very good!
    • Nose
He smells surprisingly young, not like 18 years, but probably points to the pure character. Grapes, wine, oak, ripe apples.
    • Taste
But it tastes better than it smells, warm, strong, fruity.
    • Finish
      Pretty long, pleasant finish.

Hmmmm, the way the sherry comes forward fits well in my little street, on the other hand the whole thing is pretty subtle. A bit of a shy teenager, not the best arran on sherry, yet not very wrong (better than the 16 imho, but less than the 17)

(head to head with the 16 and the 17)
    • Nose
: A bit shy, clear sherry (raisins, sweet)
    • Taste
Remains somewhat subtle, more sherry like the 17 and the 16, pretty nutty (almond, hazelnut), amontillado sherry like.
    • Finish
      Medium-long, woody, sweet with marzipan

    N-
Rum, tropical fruits of lychee and longan, with touch of feint sour
notes. Softly dust with cinnamon and cloves, some vanilla, dash of nuts.
Much softer and mellow with the extra year of aging, and are gaining
more charming fruits. Lack the boldness of the much woody 17YO.

P- Cherry liqueur with doses of peppers. Rounded and sweet.

F- Long and echoing. Return of caramel and lovely vanilla. Smooth.

Quite ok, although the cask influence (sherry?) is very weak here.
    • Nose
Shy, not very distinctive. Peach, cream, some flowery notes and a whiff of toffee. There is a faint note of tropical fruits too.
    • Taste
Warm, rounded, quite nice. Pear, sugar, peach, gooseberry. Some spices.
    • Finish
Quite short with some reminiscent fruitiness and spicy ginger.

    • Nose
Sweet and fruity. Honey. Vanilla. Cough drop. Crumble cacke. Bright fruits. Canned peaches. Mango. Banana. Contrary to the information, the malt looks like a classic ex-bourbon ripened whisky.
    • Taste
Sweet start. Treacle. Honey. Cereals. Tropical fruits. Spicy with pepper and a hint of ginger. Cocoa. Oak spice.
    • Finish
Long. At first spicy. Ginger. Pepper. Gingerbread spices. Dark chocolate. Dry and bitter finish with prominent oak tannins.

    • Taste

Tasty Whisky Festival 2016. Arran belongs to my favorite brands, again it was a good shot. I enjoyed it.
    • Nose
First shriveled honey, with vanilla. Then the butter biscuits, the lemons that add freshness, and the mint and warmth will come on. Rich, more and more scents still appear. (88 b)
    • Taste
Sweet, graceful, fresh grassy, spicy. Comprehension of smell with taste is great. (88 b)

  29. DrinkingWhisky scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

This one seems to have a lot more bourbon in comparison with the 16yo and 17yo Pure by Nature, though the data suggests it only has matured in ex-sherry hogsheads. Then it must have been a bad batch of hogsheads... Tasted 22/01/2016 in an Arran line-up.
    • Nose
Woody, red fruit, vanilla sweetness with faint hints of something citrussy on the background.
    • Taste
Creamy honied sweetness, aniseed, orange zests and some faint red fruit - but less than the 16yo and 17yo Pure by Nature. This one is really different; less complex.
    • Finish
Medium, sweet with some aniseed and mint.

n:  very fruity at first nosing with gentle sherry influence. peaches and red berries.
a slight sulphury note. the oak is not too loud and brings a nice spicy component
together with warm aromas of fresh croissants, cereals and some nuts.
given some time in the glass the sherry influence gets more prominent.
t:  juicy to waxy mouthfeel with a medium to strong body.
much more spices than on the nose. also more of these croissants.
        caramel and hazelnuts.
    f:  long and spicy
comments: benefits a lot from water and needs some time in the glass

I like this unagitated yet profound style. Don't rush it. It needs time and it deserves it. 87/88
    • Nose
At first it's pretty closed and toned down. It needs a lot of time in the glass until it opens up. It remains subtle, but very nice with quite some depth. I get minerals first, limestone, sand, a bit firestone, a mix of old and fresh apples but also tropical fruits like bananas, a little papaya (which I detect only because I had the new ten years old before, where the papaya is actually more prominent), citrus, white grapes for a sweet dessert wine, lime tree honey, a little hay, toasted bread, just a little oak, some fresh thyme, peanuts and walnuts - but none of these fragrance standing out, it's all very well composed. In terms of sherry: there is definitely sherry, yet it's less oloroso, more like palo cortado.
    • Taste
First a slight bitterness, an extremely soft and creamy texture, medium body, a nice development, the bitter zests returning, some spices fade in, aniseed.
    • Finish
anise, almonds, marzipan, pecan-nuts, lemon sherbet.

  38. Falnor scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Nice one, but hard to say it's worth the hype. I would have loved more noticable sherry.
    • Nose
      Nice sugared
fruit. A tick layer of vanilla and above all sweetness. Honey and barley with
sugar. Toffee or soft caramel. Some fresh apples. A hint of roasted nuts. Not at all very sherried.
    • Taste
Applejuice, apple pie, bit creamy not the fresh apple from the nose. A bit of dry oak, spices like cinnamon, toasted bread, butter, nougat.
    • Finish
Dry oak, anise or other herbs like that. Oh yes, still some apples.

He is OK, but does not tear me off the stool. Which is relatively to see: This is already a delicious 18er, but from the conclusion of the limited 16-17-18 model trilogy for a sporty 90 € I would have expected more.
    • Nose
Touch of fresh red raspberries and cherries, then honey, nut, roasted aromas, some spicy oak
    • Taste
sweet and slightly spicy, toffee, nougat, butter crumble, latte, light ginger and cinnamon
    • Finish
long, dry, slightly bitter (cocoa, coffee), slightly hot

Nose: The nose is a wonderful mélange of sweet syrup, wood spice and vanilla. There are also notes of toasted oak, almonds, nuts and fragrant wild flower honey. Very nicely integrated. Fresh yet perfumed. With baked apple desert, to add a nice fruity edge. This is the kind of nose you can sniff, and sniff for quite a long time. Classic stuff.

Palate: Toffee , candy and rum soaked sponge cake. Chocolate, spice and some cinnamon buns as well as honey, vanilla custard and toasted oak I like it very very much. It’s dry but it’s mouth watering. Really lovely honeyed feeling to it, and the sherry is not overpowering, but it’s there for added sweetness. that’s for sure.

Finish: Dry. Toasted oak and Chocolate truffles ,with almonds and cocoa powder.

    Conclusion:

This is really excellent stuff, a true milestone, and you have to admit Arran are making awesome whiskies recently. They got the right spirit, and the casks are great, they are doing a good job of vatting casks, and producing ‘A’ level whiskies. No games, no tricks. Whisky.

Splendid stuff, and I like it a lot.

If you can find a bottle, get one, while it lasts. 9,000 bottles of this quality tend to disappear quickly.

A very well crafted whisky. Not your typical sherried whisky. Light and subtle, and very clean.
    • Nose
Matured in ex-sherry casks, I'm guessing most of 'em have been refill and/or American white oak. Fairly intense vanilla and a sugary sweetness, with golden syrup and custard as well. Exotic fruits like peaches and mango, but also green apple. Very well balanced and integrated.
    • Taste
A bit spicy on the arrival, nutmeg maybe. Green apple, apfel strudel and some butterscotch. Light caramel, green tea. Some tannins as well, so slightly dry. Mouthfeel is a bit flat. I like my whisky oily and thick, the opposite of watery. This one is a bit in between.
    • Finish
Impressively long and drying with a lot of the same flavors returning. Mainly apple and golden syrup, but green tea as well.

  47. Bishlouk scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Once again, Arran offers us a good product, balanced, complex and changing, solid (the reduction is imperceptible); In short, overall pleasant and well done.
    • Nose
A lot of yellow apple, accompanied by citric acid and green apple. Some iodized smoke is also present, as well as a hint of wax.
    • Taste
Apple, lemon, and pinches of pear and apricot. A sweet and sweet side grows. Slices of red apple peel.
    • Finish
A sweet / salty mix is installed. Some sweet spices. Slight woody drought. A slight iodine smoke then reappears.
