I am absolutely not a finishing lover, but still allow me the two critical questions:
Was there a slightly inferior 21-year-old who was easily concealed? Or: Was a port wine finishing process wasted on a wonderful basic drop?
In any case, the composition is not completely convincing to me, it is sold quite dearly on the market today.
    • Nose
pleasant spicy depth, malty acidity, fruity (mandarins / oranges), slightly restrained cedar wood
    • Taste
Honey, spice (here the drop lacks a bit of bite)
    • Finish
And then things explode with an even slightly alcoholic note (at this age and "only" 40%!). In addition to the blood oranges and tangerines, I think I even feel some cocoa, but also liquorice. This is where the juices drawn from the finishing barrels come into play, but without the otherwise relatively typical wine gum sound. All in all a sweet and bitter cocktail.

Red fruits, light blackcurrant, blueberry, pear, redcurrant, blackberries, muscat grapes, sweet apple, this nose is bewitching, with just enough spices to enhance the fruit. Lie-de-vin, saffron. Mouth made with vanilla, prune, cinnamon and benzoin. An intense woodiness comes to structure the whole. Despite the light alcohol content, it is very ripe. Fairly long finish with very red but juicy plum. Heather earth, peach skin, blood orange. It takes a long time to pass out.

Colour: amber. Nose: honey, dried fruits, old leather, oak, spices, marzipan, sweet fruits, raisin, butterscotch. Mouth: baking spices, raisin, oak, nuts, leather, butterscotch, honey. Finish: long, spices, dryness, vanilla, honey, raisin, nuts. It’s a sweet, superb and very tasty whisky. Port finish add some interesting notes to classic The Balvenie taste.

    Nose:-
Bold and stand tall, deep and thick waves of aroma. Charred grilled
tropical fruits carried along wood smokes. Creamy bisquity. Grapey. Palate:- Promising nose deliver to the palate, velvet and elegant,
sublime balance . Abundant of dried fruits, white juicy grapes fragrant
    and fine tannin.

Finish:- Medium length, smooth with fine wood, mellow and exit gracefully.

  15. Thermidor scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

I liked this more this time than on the previous times I've tried it, but still feel that the 15yo single barrel gives much more bang for the buck being half the price of this one [note originally written before they discontinued the 15 SB]. With regards to this I feel a bit like I feel about Highland Park's current 21: appreciably different from their younger bottles but not memorable enough to justify the price.
    • Nose
I swear this is a case where what the finishing adds to the taste, it takes away from the nose which is positively neutral compared to the Balvenie 12 and 15 single barrels I have in the glasses next to it.

Austere winey sweetness. No gummi candy like in finished sherry whiskys, but instead just this even tone of diluted damp red wine. Nail polish remover, but just a hint. The finishing aroma is very prominent on top of everything else and the end product smells more sour than either of the single barrels next to it.
    • Taste
Surprisingly present alcohol note at first which then bends into dry wine taste. It isn't bad at all but somehow seems mostly concentrated on one note as if the port cask is the one carrying the load here. I'll try adding a bit of water to see if that would break up the monotony. Coming back to it after trying the 12 and the 15 again this is the one that stands out but only as different, not better. With water there's wood in the body and taste. A slighlty stale, vinegarish alcohol note comes in but bows out just as it begins to annoy.
    • Finish
The tail's cask wood taste leaves too soon. It's not particularly lively or changing.

  16. Torfding scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

    Aroma: fruity, heavy wine

Taste: slightly peppery and sweet, light oak, caramel, a hint of orange, full-bodied

    Finish: medium, soft, some oak

Comment: A good and light malt, which one does not notice his age so much. Mercilessly overpriced course and unfortunately only with 40%, cool filtered and dyed, which certainly further reduces the pleasure.

tasty and tasty, but unfortunately also a bit thin
at age 21 and Port Wood ... I'm just expecting more
    • Nose
      red fruit, plum with cinnamon
Baked apple with raisins and almonds
      caramelized vanilla sugar
    • Taste
      fruity, sweet berries
Oak; not bitter, rather milk chocolate
    • Finish
      fruity oak
      pretty short

    IWSC gold in 2011.

    Tasted in November 2014.
    • Nose
Fruity and creamy. Elegant with white peach, light smoke, vanilla, Bourbon, oak, citrus, raisins, Brazil nuts and flowers.
    • Taste
Delicate and sugared with red fruit, raisins, white grapes, milk chocolate, molasses, caramel, pepper, nuts, oak and a very floral honey.
    • Finish
Slightly bitter, long and dry with cocoa, nuts, vanilla, oranges and sweet spices.

    Good, but not Amazing....

At 40% ABV and chill filtered, it's just not enough...

Would I have tapped blindly on a malt from the port barrel here? Rather not. He is delicate and round, nothing stands out. He is quite tasty but with the best will, here is no good PLV offered. If I get the offer, like, buy yourself definitely no!
    • Nose
very delicate appearance, tangerine cream yoghurt cream, slightly this typical for me Balvenie wood cupboard note, caramel cream, summer flower meadow comes out now and then, with the addition of some orange zest
    • Taste
Soft creamy mouthfeel, fine fruit sweetness, red apple, very light strawberry, a whole milk chocolate filled with orange liqueur can be guessed
    • Finish
easy cappuccino, tangerine sour cream cake, some apple and away, rather a short treat

While the nose was pretty pleasing, the taste and finish were pathetic! Without exaggerating, I can say, that this Balvenie 21yo was one of the worst Single Malts I´ve ever tasted. Shocking!
    • Nose
Intense fruits. Dark and ripe. Raisins and glazed oranges. Typical Balvenie honey. Rich oak aromas. Nice spiciness. Very little port though. No alcohol.
    • Taste
Surprisingly...well...soft?! No...weak!! The taste is a total disappointment from the beginning to be honest. It appears this whisky was watered down way too much by the distillery. There is nothing else in the taste than bitter, very dry oak.
    • Finish
The same goes for the finish. Bitter and dry. No fruits, no sweetness.

Since I had a high expectation. Port-maturation I like, after 21 years something must have gone into the whisky. My expectations were disappointed, but a good whisky, but nothing special
    • Nose
Orange peel, red fruits, alcohol though only 40%
    • Taste
Sweet, honey, orange, red fruit, port (like a LBV)
    • Finish
relatively short, no trace of heat, no lasting aromas

  31. Wild Thing scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Too little for the price and the port is also weak to not over.
    • Nose
Very sweet, the typical Balvenie honey sweetness. Maybe I'm not sure about the smoke. Dark fruits and light vanilla.
    • Taste
Very sweet and spicy start. Very light oak. But complex is different. But it is very soft and elegant.
    • Finish
Just a little oak and that's it.

  32. Alex scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Really excellent nose, but loose it a bit on the palate. I guess bottling at higher strength would not improve it, just amplify the woodiness. Overall still a very good dram - don't get me wrong - with an excellent nose! The nose itself would score above 90/100.
    • Nose
loads of beeswax and honey, dried yellow fruits (apricots). Quite fragrant. Also polished oak with cloves. Very refined and elegant nose. Excellent!
    • Taste
loads of wood upfront with strong peppery notes. Still some dried fruits and honeys around which bring nice sweetness, but get overpowered by the spicy and bitterish wood extracts.
    • Finish
medium long with improved balance between the sweet and bitter notes

  33. Stazz scored this whisky 82 points Member Senior

It is great, main guy in Balvenie loves it but.. Too costfull, and in comparison with doublewood it lose the race.

Maybe I couldn`t to catch it, because of too high alcohol degree-46..don`t know.

I was Porto lover before becoming single lover, but was a bit dissapointed with this combination...maybe I`m too "young" to value this Balvenie.

  34. Magnus Hillman scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Good port wood, but I expect a lot of refill bourbon in this one. With a solid craft presentation (NC2 and at least 46% ABV), this would be an excellent dram. It is easily approachable but too diluted and the finish is a real disappointment in my opinion.
    • Nose
Vanilla, grapes, barley sugar, honey and syrup.
    • Taste
Juicy red plums, red berries, the port is obvious. Slightly oaky (but not as much as I would expect from a 21 yo) with vanilla at the side.
    • Finish
The contribution from the port cask is there but disappears rather quick and the finish is left with a rather short honey sweet flavor before its all gone.

  35. Ikkakumon scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

    Very good, but lacks power.
    • Nose
Orchard fruits, dried fruits (raisins, hazelnuts, walnuts), sweet spices. Marked influence of Porto cask
    • Taste
Light (too much?), Tender and honeyed, caramel, fresh fruit, Porto again.
    • Finish
      Medium, woody and peppery.

  36. Jean-Brice scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

    Nice but too small. Pity.
    • Nose
Beautiful influence of the port. I like this type of nose rather special
    • Taste
Unfortunately, the mouth is too small.
    • Finish
      Quite short

  37. hsmithjr scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Honeycomb and a big sweet port wine.  Black walnuts.  Sweet guava. Gentle perfume.  Ladies make-up drawer. English toffee.
    • Taste
Pepper, honey, and oak. Nutty. Dried mixed fruit. Medjool dates.
    • Finish
Pepper and more oak.  Lots of oak, actually.  Winter spices.  Pine.

  38. granella2003 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A masterpiece! Probably the best port wood finish ever. The tracks of oak declare its age. A clear focus of nuts and lots of fruits.

Light gold colour. At the nose honey with a hint of spice. Taste is slightly dry, nuts and fruit

  42. markjedi1 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A nice Balvenie, however a bit lacking in punch and a bit too heavy on tannins. I believe the influence of the port was rather limited, which is a good thing. If this were bottled at 46%, it might even become a spectacular whisky.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
    • Nose
On the nose, I am overwhelmed with sweetness: caramel, toffee, oranges, vanilla and honey, but the port wine gives it a nice round twist. It is waxy on beeswax. It even has a nice bitter lining, like walnuts, from the oak. Hand warmth makes it a tad exotic. Dried pineapple, baked banana and mango.
    • Taste
The body is, admittedly, rather light. I had expected this to be creamier. Very fruity, though. Immediately the dried fruit emerges, heavy on spice, with a truckload of honey. Very drying too. Midpalate, it even becomes somewhat oaky, but luckily not over the top. The spices: cinnamon and white pepper.
    • Finish
The finish is the best part of this whisky. Long and warm on pears and pepper.

  43. Drochaid scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

An additional period of maturation in 30 year-old Port pipes has given this aged Balvenie an extra level of depth and concentration of flavour, adding potent fruit and smoke notes to the silky-smooth full-bodied palate. Rich, indulgent, after-dinner Speyside at it`s best.

  44. Miconciencia scored this whisky 87 points Member Senior

  45. mmaclean scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

What I love about the PortWood finish is its complex palate and the nose

is incredible. One of my absolute favorites. The coffee, mocha, orange

peel, and the finish is just sensational. This is the one to get if you

want that wow factor for any gift.
