    Enthusiasm Nose 2/5 Mouth and finish 3/5 Whisky n ° 1593

    (2nd tasting: 3/5 overall)
    • Nose
      Ashes and malt. 15 years? It is much younger. Ham Softer but also more peppery with water.

      2nd tasting:
      Fresh, smoked, maritime (lack more than shrimp!) Sand, citrus.
    • Taste
      There is relief, it is balanced, sparkling and round; 2nd tasting:
      Spicy attack, milky texture. Alcohol well integrated. Lack of fruit for my taste. Too austere for a Caol Ila.
    • Finish
      Bitter and fruity. Persistent fresh peat. With water, longer, intense and spicy.
      2nd tasting:
      Round, persistent peat, quite spicy and almost sweet.

    Caol Ila hardly disappoints, this is no exception. Refill and CI are a perfect combination.
    • Nose
      A bit un-Caol Ila, toffee and caramel strike first. This vanishes after a while, leaving another high quality refill baby. It gives a smooth peaty, smoky, medicinal and oily touch. Damp peat, wood smoke (from Lapsang Souchong), antiseptic, camphor, menthol. It's quite creamy too! And finally, there is vanilla and citrus.
    • Taste
      The medicinal side is the most prominent one. Antiseptic, iodine, camphor and menthol are dominantly present. Then a bit of bacon, rather dry wood smoke, lemon peel, cream and almonds.
    • Finish
      Rather long, still rather coastal (medicinal, peat, wood smoke and salt), a bit spice on clove and mostly pepper, and cream.

    I would believe myself in a small fishing port in Brittany. Caol Ila very marine, but in calm water. To taste at ease, over time, to give him the opportunity to deliver all its facets. I have not tested, but it should marry wonderfully with a smoked fish or shellfish.
    • Nose
      At first, we know that we are dealing with an Islay; no doubt about it. Cold ashes, spray, oyster shells crushed. A bit of vanilla and plum blossom nectar behind it all. After aeration, the scents melt more with each other, making the whole softer and rounder.
    • Taste
      Very balanced, without any aggressiveness. Drops of salted lemon. Always a lot of cold ashes. Some peppery spices, but also a little vanilla liqueur to soften all that.
    • Finish
      Long. By swallowing, the ash turns into smoked trout. Iodine lingers in the throat, as well as the lemon squeezed into the cheeks.

    Great Caol Ila, just
    the way I like it. Around 90 EUR.
    • Nose
      I get a truckload of
      citrus on the nose, with soft ashes, some fish oil and creosote. Then a big
      dose of vanilla kicks in, as does some sweet fruit. Think young apples and
      sweet pears. Flints in the background. A hint of candied ginger. A smile
      touches my lips.
    • Taste
      On the palate it is
      bull’s eye! A serious portion of peat and salt precede a feisty pepper. The
      ginger and the oak are loud, before making place for the sweet fruit which also
      comes in large portions. The maritime character makes places for a wonderful
      sweetness. Good balance too. Does not need water.
    • Finish
      The finish is quite
      long, sweet and spicy.
