It was an Xmas day discussion (or rather observation) with a friend of mine: Glendronach Single Cask, from the Billie Walker days - the best nose there is in modern whisky.

It's Boxing day and quite cold. So in order bring the typical Glendronach flavors to the front, this requires quite some hand-warming. Once done, you are rewarded with a pallet of raisins, burned sugar and tropical fruit all served on a plate of beautiful sherry notes.
    • Taste
      88 88
Rather creamy. Great sherry notes (but no glen sherry), in combination of fruity and mild spicy flavors. ABV is high but not too high. Five drops of water just to loosen up the whisky is sufficient.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long finish, in which spicy flavors dominate; but again everything in good balance.

  3. HammerHead scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      89 89
Sweet fruitiness, rather sparkling, cherries, powdered candy, sweet oranges, canned tangerines, some butterscotch, brown sugar, nutty and a whiff of furniture polish.
    • Taste
      87 87
The alcohol is nicely integrated. It takes some water easily, though doesn't necessarily need a lot. Much more spiciness than the nose has to offer, leather and slight notes of tobacco, bitter chocolate, still some cherries, grapefruit and juicy orange, also pepper and bitter tannines, but nothing too much.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium to long: a short burst of bitter fruits, mild notes of liquorice, some dark chocolate and coffee, ending on drying oak wood.

    Glendronach as it should be.
    • Nose
      87 87
Chocolate, dark fruit, coffee and earthy notes.
    • Taste
      87 87
Coffee again. Furthermore, honey, orange, tobacco, dark fruit, dark chocolate
    • Finish
      86 86
A medium to long finish, fruity, a pepper and tobacco.

So I have this bottle open for a year and half and it’s due to be finished. This Glendronach benefits from airtime and will improve month after month. It remains a tad sharp in both nose and taste, but with a drop of water it turns nice sweet and fruity. It gives you toffee, cherry, oranges, nuts and some dry leaves aroma’s. I bought a second bottle just before they sold out. At €70 a no-brainer.

For my taste, a comparatively weak filling of the GlenDronach Single Cask series.
The whisky is only in a small glass to advantage, otherwise it is quite fast too thin. At the same time, the taste and finish are dominated by strong bitterness notes from the (European) oak, which unfortunately are not integrated into other sherry flavors.
    • Nose
      86 86
In a small glass develop very beautiful, sweet sherry flavors, butter cake, honey, toffee, caramelized sugar, vanilla.
    • Taste
      84 84
Short sweet, then quickly bitter-sweet, sweet sherry, pastries, dusty wood, bitter oak notes, spicy aromas, clear espresso. Unfortunately neither creamy nor voluminous.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium long, bitter espresso, still slightly dusty, woody spiciness. Somehow thin, by no means full-bodied.

Very nice Dronach, good combination of red fruits and chocolate. Very enjoyable.
    • Nose
      87 87
Nice red fruits, milk chocolate a lot, warm chocolate milk, some earthy notes, moss. Coffee.
    • Taste
      88 88
A little pickering, coffee, red fruits, some darker chocolate now, honey and oranges. Full and intense, later on some tobacco.
    • Finish
      87 87
Some pepper, warming, intense. Red fruits, Haribo cherry sweets, pretty long. Now some cigar tobacco in the finish.

    Not the best GD.
    • Nose
Musty and dusty, cheese, mint, honey, rubber, stock (maggi), muscavado sugar, peach, sugared almonds.
    • Taste
Sweet, sour, drying (on pepper), overripe fruits, barley, honey, ginger, almonds.
    • Finish
Slightly drying, sour and oxidizing grapes. Further: honey, plums, ginger.

Thanks for a sample Johan, really enjoyed this one.
    • Nose
Cherry, peach, oranges, chocolate, sultanas, raspberry jam, fruitcake, hazelnuts and toffee
    • Taste
Oily, toffee, peach, cherry, nuts, hint of pepper, oranges and chocolate.
    • Finish
Long, oily with a hint of nuts

  25. KayMeertens scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

It's more fruity but also more nutty than last year's very dark PX cask 5692.
    • Nose
      87 87
Cherry, hazelnut paste, rhubarb, toffee, orange, caster sugar, fig, roasted almond, banana, peach and oak. A slight malty touch and some spice. Turns thin rather quickly with a few drops of water, not beneficial.
    • Taste
      86 86
Orange, hazelnut, toffee, pepper, cinnamon, rhubarb, roasted almond, fig and peach. Addition of water seems to make it even more spicy, but also more malty.
    • Finish
      86 86
Hazelnut, caramel, rhubarb, cherry, apple syrup, banana and orange.
