Whisky Reviews for Ardbeg 1974 GM

2 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 91.00 points

  1. hs305 scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

[2015]  I had this dram during a private tasting of whisky connoisseurs at Limburg.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  I took no detailed notes as there were simply too many drams...  Every connoisseur brought several bottles from his collection to the tasting where they were lined up by common decision.  Just 1 cl was served as otherwise we probably would not have seen the end of the tasting without medical problems.

As this was a flabbergasting event I list all the line-up and my resp. scores below:

  2. WhiskyLovingPianist did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

N: One thing is clear, this may be a NAS but Auriverdes it isn’t. This comes from a time before 46% was the new 40%. This is potent stuff, the peat truly integrated with the fruity, oily malt, along with peanut oil, pumpkin seed oil, 2-stroke, shallots, mustard, oyster sauce, charred vanilla pods, carob, fresh sea ozone, celery seeds, onion seeds, roasted fennel, spring onions/aniseed wood, ginger sponge cake,….. potent but soft, the cask influence acting as a comfort blanket and the peat levels - perfect too. Fabulous start.
T: Thats an oily and briny arrival with a mild-smoky peaty oakiness which coats the whole palate. Delicious stuff although a tad flat and uneventful. Adding water provides even more oils and more fruits with a fresh balsamic glaze and a light but sweet tomato spread. Big but soft spearmint freshness into the finish.
F: Pumpkin seeds then vegetal [fennel] fresh, turning very cardboardy initially with an ever present waxy, fresh yet chalky yoghurt and psyllium husk finish. An hour later the perfect peaty malt finish never fails to please.
C: A stella nose leads to a yummy mouthfeel but its rather uneventful thereafter [by vintage Ardbeg standards]. Still a wonderful whisky nevertheless.

    Scores a B+
