Whisky Reviews for Lochside 1963 JM

- The nose is a classic mellow old grain profile, with plenty of coconut, vanilla and pencil shavings, but with extra complexity added by some tropical fruits lingering in the background. It needed a few drops of water, as neat it was a bit too hot and spirity, masking the softer notes. Nothing too distinct, however, from lots of other old grains I've tried recently (I'd find it very difficult to distinguish, for example, the nose on an old Lochside grain from one on an old Invergordon), in contrast to the more distinct profiles that I can detect between old malts from different distilleries. Sweet fruits and vanilla dominate the palate, but here the ripe tropical fruits emerge even more strongly (after a good 15 minutes in the glass) than I have experienced previously with other old grains (a distilled-specific trait perhaps?). Slightly short and finish, as with the majority of other grains I've tried. The palate is the star then, with a more 'standard' old grain nose and finish. Perfect pre-Christmas dinner dram!
