Whisky Reviews for Benromach 1976 CA

Nose – This has only had a few days to open up but already it’s an enormous, waxy, old bourbon cask fruit bomb. Vimto, toffee apple, musky oak floorboards, travel sweets – so, so juicy. The wood is balanced but intense, lacquered and sappy. An enormous, but elegant nose. With water, much gentler fruits, with warm, waxy wood and musk, and gentle citrus notes.

Body – Fruity, then very spicy, then a massive amount of wood spice and wax, and ancient wood – bannisters and floorboards, library wood. And still juicy. With water, lots of the fruit intensity is lost and that strident wood structure comes through more.

Finish – Very long, oily and intense. Quite hot, almost metallic, with cough sweets and lingering wood. Burps are of Asian fruits and Thai food.

This one has to be sipped slowly. A very elegant nose, very nice mouth and a surprising finish. Didn't expect these tropical fruits. Excellent.
    • Nose
Apple, pear at first with a pinch of salt. Quickly turns citrusy, lighly grassy and spicy. Hints of vanilla and pastry.
    • Taste
Oily and juicy. Citrus again, bringing some sourness, nicely mixed with honey. A bit of wood and grass at the end.
    • Finish
Long. Honey, vegetal and smoky. And tropical fruits.

Nose: Oily and grassy-fresh with slightly dull-fruity aromas of quince marmalade and jam. Also notes of leather and vanilla pods and a metallic smell of tin cans.
Taste: Oranges - Grand Marnier, plus smoke, an accumulating minerality and tart herbs. In the accessory pack sweet honey with spiked grapefruit. Towards the finish becoming "greener", with smoky wood in the transition.
Finish: Long - fruity-tart and refreshing with lemon and grapefruit, herbs, honey and intense smoke. With hints of tropical fruits and china grass as well as some cocoa ending.

    • Nose
Sweet malt, candied fruit, a very slight smoky note, some salt apple juice, "sour gum" - but you could also describe this note as grapefruit. It is this acidity that gives this Benromach that certain something. The wood adds spice, but stays in the background.
    • Taste
Very fat and sweet, but also with "sour gum" or grapefruit. It develops an interplay of sweetness and acidity, which makes this malt very interesting and lively. The wood sometimes appears a little more clearly, but in a pleasant way. Since this is a medium weight whisky, the 52.9% alc / vol is just right.
    • Finish
Long and sweet finish with salt and a very slight bitterness.

    Cadenhead Tasting Notes:

Nose: Really fresh and bursting with juicy fruits.
Palate: The palate continues with the fruit bomb along with a touch of oakiness which reveals this whiskies maturity.
Finish: Light oak notes in the finish give way to wave after wave of the syrupy tropical fruits.
