Not bad, but overpriced. The Warrior Series is right from this point of view. 87/88.

Decent dram, old school sherry notes, quite enjoyable.

Cigar box wood, sanded and dusty wood, old leather, black cherries, tobacco leaves, light note of orange oil. Not really any dried fruits, I'm guessing it's probably a PX sherry. Slight hint of varnish, light smoke, tiny hint of toffee.
    • Taste
      87 87
Decent alcohol burn, warmth with black pepper and ginger, a bit of muscovado sugar, dry wooden bitterness, pickled plum, sour cherry, astringent notes, freshly cut grass. Not a lot of sweetness, but some smoke, and a nice full body. Second chew is super dry, my gums get squeaky. More ginger, light spearmint, more astringency, sour cherries or light green apple. A bit more sweetness now, like white refined sugar. Warm smoke, body is still good. Third chew has more bite, more spices and ginger, but also more sweetness on the front. Creamy toffee and muscovado sugar, more smoke, leathery notes, brine. Spicy, salty, sweet, smoky. Not bad.
    • Finish
      89 89
Very warm, peppery, smoky. Light sweetness lingers, some oaky bitterness and the astringency is still there. Quite a consistent flavor profile throughout, which is uncommon. Sweetness wanes off, but so do the bitter, dry, and astringent notes. Very long, and some espresso or coffee notes come out later, adding a few points.

Straightforward sherry with a tiny hint of sulphur, easy to drink

    Aroma:
At first a little bit of behavior, after a while fragrant with sherry, dried fruit, some oak and a light smoke note

    Taste:
with onset, slightly burning and tingling with warm wood notes and spice, becoming soft, slightly tart. Herb-sweetish finish with wood aromas, sherry and dried fruit.

    finish:
dark, raisins, chocolate, some oak, hint of smoke and coffee.
Tart sweet, oak notes, ending with a slightly sweetish finish.

A sherry accented, spicy and oak milled Highland Park!

Unfortunately disappointing compared to the hype and Co. Overall, a delicious whisky, which unfortunately does not have a lot of variety and also slight miss notes.
    • Nose
Chestnut, matchled wood, black cherry, figs, gingerbread, raisins, oak, walnut, some gum, ginger, dark chocolate, spelled biscuits
    • Taste
Raisins, gingerbread, ginger, dates, figs, a bit alcoholic, nutmeg, dark chocolate and cocoa, a bit metallic, forest soil, but unfortunately not, hint Heiderauch in the background
    • Finish
Still dark and dry, raisins, ginger, nutmeg and chocolate with some oak edge and smoke, medium length

  13. Gris scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A rather powerful whisky (especially) in the mouth, and not only because of its degree of alcohol, but also because of spices and smoke… to which are finally added only slightly fruity notes. It kicks me, I like raw casks, but this Highland Park Odin lacks a little complexity. So, Thor is for me the new King of the Gods. http://www.justanotherdram.com/en/tasting-notes/highland-park-odin-2.html
    • Nose
The sherry casks have done their job and you can feel it immediately. Notes of raisins and spices invade the nose before being joined by these other typical notes of dates and figs. A hint of honey and smoke (well, it’s Highland Park huh) complete the picture.
    • Taste
Raisins like found on the nose but more spices with a good dose of pepper. Some orange notes. More smoke, and more pungent than with the nose. Pretty raw.
    • Finish
A rather long peppery finish, with a small salty and smoky side.

  14. Monte Gehro scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Blind tasting. A whisky for those who like it strong and spicy. Lovers of sweet sherry and fruit notes are not likely to get their money's worth here.

After all, there is a lot of substance behind the Odin. The current price is beyond good and evil (from about 400 euros, as of March 2018)
    • Nose
Rather heavy nose, varied and sherrylastig. Raisins, Dusty oak, beautiful spice, wax. Behind it lighter dry smoke, very well integrated alcohol.
    • Taste
Strong and warming on the tongue. At first the sherry and dark fruits outweigh, then the seasoning from the keg spreads. Smoke is only minimal to feel.
    • Finish
Good medium-length, strong and spicy, clearly the tannins from the barrel, without being overly bitter.

  15. Calmar scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A great mole, the aroma first deceives by its closeness and emptiness, but then opens in halftones and shades, however, remaining very reserved; taste from the first seconds removes all doubts about the quality and place of the sample in the higher league - powerful, rich, bitter-herbaceous, dry, very unusual, but very attractive, the aftertaste adequately continues the taste theme; Technically perfect - balance, work with the fortress, pitches, everything is on top, in general, discarding questions of pricing, marketing and other hulls - an excellent example of island whisky.
    • Nose
Closed, cool, buckwheat honey, sea notes - iodine, algae; apple jam, toffee, dried apricots, nuts, caramel, light peat and intoxicating tones, light beer.
    • Taste
Pepper-honey, spicy, lemonade, powerful and deep, fresh, soft, lemon peels, white grapefruit, caramel, herbal tea - thyme, oregano.
    • Finish
      Pepper, warming, bitter herbs, oak bitterness, grapefruit crusts, slightly astringent, long-lasting, dry;

Thor is much more refined, but I really like the raw power of Odin.
    • Nose
Heavy on dark fruits and thick sherry.

Rough on the edges with soaked cask wood and some burnt matches/fireworks.

A pint of stout and some tobacco.
    • Taste
On the edge of pungent. Lots of spicy power.

Bitter on tanins and dark pure coco.

      Thick and almost "meaty".

Turning sweeter on dark fruit and some nuts.

In no way refined, but still complex in a "in your face" kind of way.
    • Finish
Long drying finish, full of warm spice, drying.

  18. Gris scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A whisky rather powerful but lacking a little finesse, I definitely prefer Thor.
    • Nose
It smells of sherry and dried fruit, charcoal. Something rather rough rounded with a little fruity sweetness.
    • Taste
It is spicy and peppery with a touch of orange, when you add water the spices are a little more.
    • Finish
A rather long finish, peppery, a small side saline and smoked.

I still like it a lot and for me it's by far the best malt in this series. In the nose, a slightly different malt than flavor and certainly not for lovers of sweet malts. However, the typical spicy and slightly smoky character of Highland Park is very beautiful and has a lot to offer. Price wise like so many bottlings but now completely covered, it does not change the elaborate optics.
    • Nose
Fresh, fruity, creamy. The sherry barrels are immediately present and give the Odin a pleasantly light-fruity nose. Not intrusive, none of the omnipresent "sherry bombs". Behind it noticeable smoke, but also remains unobtrusively in the background. Spicy oak, some tart and dusty aromas that come close to leather. Some honey sweetens the whole thing again.
Beautiful and varied nose, makes you want more.
    • Taste
Decent start, immediately show up on the sherry casks. But they also quickly make room for a good portion of oak flavor. Now it gets bitter, the sweetness steps back. A slight hint of pepper, peat smoke, nuts, a little sulfur and again the leathery notes from the nose.
After the first moment here much tart than the nose, not a malt for the rather sweet faction of sherry lovers. Instead spicy, strong, nutty and slightly dry.
    • Finish
Pleasant, powerful finish, medium length. Also here peat smoke, spicy notes and tannins. Slightly astringent. The sweetness of the sherry casks and the light honey are now completely gone.

Sort of disappointed. In my opinion and over-rated (and definitely over-priced) whisky, yet very drinkable. Presentation seems to be key here.
    • Nose
Sherry-led for starters. Barbecued meat, Christmas pudding, toffee, charcoal
    • Taste
Less sweet than expected, sweetness plays a secondary role here. Pepper, salt and spices take the lead. Sulphur. Cherry syrup, hint of tobacco, ginger, oak. Personally I find it rough and unpleasantly bitter.
    • Finish
      Dry and ashy.

  22. Sandman scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

It is a whisky that is good taste and nicely complex. However, overpriced for me.
    • Nose
Orange, raisins, figs, cherries, sulfur, dark chocolate, hints of rubber, leather, honey, banana, smoke and sea salt.
    • Taste
Ginger, dark chocolate, cherries, raisins, oak, figs, orange, toffee, tobacco and little sea salt.
    • Finish
Long, dry, toffee, orange, a hint of smoke, dried fruit, tobacco and pepper.

The punchy power on the palate convinced me immediately. This is my favorite of the Valhalla collection.
    • Nose
Sweet nectar and honey, little smoky and leathery notes, pineapples, papaya, green bananas and soy sauce?
    • Taste
Powerful punchy burning, well balanced between wood notes and sweetness, leathery and tobacco notes again, faint peat and smoke, some ripe fruits
    • Finish
Long and burning, a tad bitterness from the oak wood

Yep, this is a big whisky with powerful aroma’s. It can be a bit overwhelming and overpowering, especially on the palate you could argue that it’s to rough. It’s less balanced than the rest of the Valhalla series but it offers a more challenging drinking experience than the rest of the whisky’s. I rather like a good challenge in my glass, for me this is one of the best of the Valhalla series but it is in very close contact with Loki. If I had to choose between them I really don’t know which is my favorite.

    • Nose
A rich, creamy, full, powerful, sweet and complex whisky with aroma’s of herbal sherry, sulfury, dried fruits (apricot, raisins, dates, figs, prunes), macerated cherries, orange peels, forest berry jam, dark forest honey, a hint of balsamic, molasses, antique polish, beeswax, old books, leather, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, concentrated sweet ginger, toffee, vanilla, lightly salted caramel, stout, overripe banana, roasted nuts?, spicy oak, cereals, barley sugar, licorice root, coal, hidden smoke and sweet tobacco
    • Taste
A powerful, strong, pungent, spicy and complex whisky with aroma’s of spicy ginger, pepper, big oak (must have been very active casks), bitter tannins, dark chocolate, dried fruits (dates, prunes, raisins, figs), candied orange peel, earthy peat, soft smoke (like smoldering oak), red berries, old books, furniture polish, wax, marmalade, muscovado sugar, gingerbread, earthy tones, mocha, hint of salt, tangy tobacco, cigars, a soft savory tone (maybe like Marmite), walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, caraway seeds, a hint of cumin, rum and more spicy oak.
    • Finish
A long, spicy and slightly drying finish with aroma’s of pepper, brine, orange peels, molasses, gentle smoke, dried cherries, sweet tobacco, bitter chocolate, spicy oak, lingering sherry, plums, dark honey and at the end an ashy dryness.

    • Nose
Vegetal at first, but that quickly makes place for fruit. Cherry syrup (lots of it), rum soaked raisins and ripe banana. Slightly burned, some smoke, but it stays very much in the background. Good balance.
    • Taste
Ginger and cherries with lots of spiciness. Cloves, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. There's a smokiness behind the spicy layer, and not much is left of the sweet fruits that were there in the nose. The palate has a rubber-y edge to it, not a very pleasant aspect. This is a lot rougher than the nose led me to believe.
    • Finish
Dry and some of the sweetness does make a return here. There's rubber (sulphur) still, with pepper and a hint of smoke.

Small note on the whisky-antique price:
Stand until 24.03.15 for 488, - € in the portfolio - then it has been loosely increased to 610, - € - something called then probably profit maximization!

    first impressions:
N: Strong alcohol, leather, musty sherry, dusty raisins, lots of strong spices, some salt and a hint of smoke

    Serge says:

Highland Park 16 yo 'Odin' (55.8%, OB, Valhalla Collection, 17000 bottles, 2015)  From a combination of firstfill sherry casks and refill hogsheads. As usual, all this Norse paraphernalia tends to leave us Latins rather cold, but after all, it’s the content that counts. I mean, the bottle's content, not the marketing content. Colour: deep gold. Nose: the sherry feels, and comes with some raisins soaked in kirsch as well as touches of gunpowder and nutmeg. Then we find more eau-de-vie-soaked cake (fruitcake with dates and figs), charcoal, burning pipe, struck matches and strong mead, with a fermentary side. It’s a little rough, perhaps, and may lack a bit of the luscious complexity of older sherried Highland Parks. With water: some kind of smoked stout, smoky mustard, walnuts… A wee feintiness, perhaps, but after tne minutes, more biscuits do emerge and it rather gets rounder. Mouth (neat): rather hot and spicy. Cumin, pepper, bitter oranges, raisins, slivovitz, ginger. Rather gritty, with a slightly acrid smokiness. With water: the spices keep singing (nutmeg, caraway, ginger) and suggest some active oak’s been used. Smoky walnuts and more bitter oranges. Ginger liqueur. Finish: rather long, peppery, slightly salty/smoky. Bitter oranges again in the aftertaste. Comments: very fine, rather powerful, but not very ‘polished’. The oak’s spices are a tad loud for my taste. Was that Odin’s personality? SGP:462 - 86 points.

Good stuff, and the change a splash of water brings is really interesting. A bit raw, this is, made me think of eau de vie which is not really a compliment. But hey, it would have been a bit boring only on sweet fruits an spices as well.
And no, I don't drink 250 EUR+ out of this one. But that was, as well as the hype about it, no criteria.
    • Nose
sweet, raisins and stewed figs, overripe bananas, wild honey. Slightly dusty and mineralic. The striking surface of an matchbox. Kirsch.
+H20: still sweet an full of raisins. Nuts, wholemeal-cookies.Rounder now, but at the same time, some rubbery notes (slightly burnt) emerge from the background. Still fruity, but not of the heavy kind any more.
    • Taste
Raisins, gingerbread and even more ginger. Metallic and earthy with some smokiness hidden behind all that. Eau de vie.And yes, spicy.
+ H2O: Surprise! Allmost all sweetness vanished. Still spicy: ginger, cloves and nutmeg. Salted toffees. Orange peel.
    • Finish
long, still sweet, but drying now. More wood and a bit herbal now.Turning salty. Campari Orange.
+H2O: turning salty and smoky right away, but it's the spices and the oak that dominate here.

    • Taste
Thick and sticky with muscavado, fruity coffee, metallic tinned peaches, and crystallised ginger. A rising edge of smouldering tangy peat that brings sea salt and dusty dark chocolate powder.

     Distillery Tasting Notes

    Colour: Vivid burst of sunlight

Nose: This intense whisky possesses a fierce spice; cinnamon
bark and nutmeg rise from Odin’s spirit. Behind the spice, toasted walnuts
smoulder with pulsating explosions of smoke. Odin cuts an ominous figure and
    this whisky is no different.

Palate: A huge, powerful palate draws on the complexity of
Odin’s character. Layers of peat uncover thousands of years of wisdom. Dense oak
and still smouldering away are the rich charred walnuts.

Finish: Throughout is a subtle sweetness, sharing the
knowledge of well-seasoned sherry wines. Plums and soft fruit disappear into
the dark as the peaty embers glow into a smoky finale.
