  1. Punktar scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

A good whisky. I'm more of a connoisseur of smoky whiskys so it's easy because I like smoke, but it's also hard because I've had my preferences for a long time. The Barrow will certainly not throw my previous favorites from the throne, but may like to be near the throne. I'll definitely try that more often.
    • Nose
      90 90
First smoke - pleasant smoke, quite strong and spicy. Leather? Smells good and invites you to taste.
    • Taste
      87 87
Good! Wood smoke and some ash. But completely in the frame. to something citrus fruit. I like it! This citrus fruit like Ardbeg, paired with subtle smoke - a very tasty whisky and certainly also suitable for smoke beginners. Do not get it wrong - it already has smoke!
    • Finish
      75 75
Pleasant and warming at the beginning, but unfortunately not very long.

Interesting, albeit rather rough and with rough edges. One can certainly guess what potential this whisky would have with a little more years under its belt.
    • Nose
Farmhouse butter, heather, cumin, grassy green barley, unripe banana, spicy aromatic smoke, aniseed biscuits, green apples, freshly mown meadow, crisp ''Packhams Triumph'' pear, a steaming youth is recognizable, vanilla
    • Taste
Granulated sugar, lemon sorbet, vanilla and noticeable smoke, the buttery barley gains the upper hand, milky toffee, sponge cake with lemon curd and meringue topping, ''Fisherman's Friend'' aniseed, pineapple, ginger, black pepper
    • Finish
Relatively long, freshly bitten parsley, pineapple, a copper luster appears, the clumsy barley has noticeably fallen into the peat, cumin fried in butter and other spices, Turkish honey without nuts, a little vanilla, salted liquorice, aromatic herbal smoke settles

Ancnoc Barrow 46%. Sampled Feb 2020. Now that's a pale whisky! About as pale as whisky can get given that it has to sit in a barrel for 3 years by law. Aroma is new make spirit, estery slightly peachy. Has that young estery dried apricot and nectarine oddness of some new make (e.g. Clydeside new make). Taste is quenching and watery up front, moving to salty and papery wood, then some buttery notes before an abrupt smoke note and a finish that suggests estery fruits, oak and smoked salt in equal measure. It's ok. It's a bit interesting if a lot immature and under-delivering on smoke. It's very drinkable but I'm pretty underwhelmed.

  10. KayMeertens scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Very standard but enjoyable, certainly for its price class. Could have been a standard bottling from Islay. More Islay-ish than the Tushkar and the Rutter in fact. Also more barley-driven.
    • Nose
      83 83
Peat, vanilla, apple, barley, mocha and caramel.
    • Taste

      Peat and gingerbread.

  11. Robinzon25 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Young "bored" smoky whisky, somewhat strongly reminiscent of 10-year-old Ardbeg. It would be interesting to compare them ...
    • Nose
The aroma is very high in iodine, peat, algae, spices and salt. In the background - black soil, engine oil, overripe berries and a metallic shade.
    • Taste
Oily, salty, peppery, with citrus acidity and a good proportion of phenols.
    • Finish
Long-lasting, oily and at the same time dry, completely smoky, filled with spices, salt, iodine, with a taste of chewing tobacco.

  12. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Drier than the Rascan and looking a little younger. I liked the Rascan a little better. Since the overall differences are not earth-shattering, you don't have to buy both.
    • Nose
also sugary sweet and nice peat smoke. Citrus, grassy and possibly a little younger than the Rascan. But only nuances.
    • Taste
In the mouth rather on the dry smoky side, the sweetness is still there, but very pushed into the background.
    • Finish
Pepper, sweet, spicy, dry peat smoke.

Very bright, but surprisingly tasty. You don't get off your stool, but it's not a bad whisky
    • Nose
      84 84
Flavors of cereals and vegetables, light notes of fruit, fine smoke lies above everything
    • Taste
      84 84
At first only smoke, then there is a lot of sweetness and some fruit, hints of custard and almond notes
    • Finish
      82 82
In short, but now surprisingly sweet, in the end the smoke and a little oak

    - very light white wine (almost water)
    - good NAS whisky,
    - is great to drink, surprisingly soft, tasty and tasty (if you like smoke), the 46% are barely noticeable, great surprise, a bit rougher and edgier than the CUTTER and not so sweet
    - P / L: approx. 50 € the liter is fully in order for the quality
    • Nose
medium-strong smoke, liquorice, spice, citrus, soft, light character
    • Taste
softer but intensely smoky onset, slowly increasing smoke with a lot of campfire smoke
    • Finish
      soft medium length finish,
long soft cold smoke in the aftertaste

  16. schengel10 scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

A good Highland Malt - liter bottle - inexpensive!
    [Color] almost clear;
    • Nose
      [N] aromatic smoke, sour lemons, wild herbs, trace vanilla;
    • Taste
      aromatic, citrus-rich gentle onset, pleasant smoke, ash, a little sweetness, vanilla, spice comes up, still young;
    • Finish
      medium-length, aromatic, dry finish; Spice sounds;

  17. M134481 scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

A fruity busy whisky. Press together in the sense of having multiple flavor notes. Not wrong. Give this whisky time to air and waltz for so long that it starts to get warm. Very soft and accessible for anyone who likes a little peat.
    • Nose
      84 84
Caramel and peat. That at first. After letting the whisky air for a while, you can smell pepper and orange peel.
    • Taste
      85 85
A striking mild taste ... in the beginning alone, but after a second or so you immediately taste the peat. Orange, caramel, pepper and sugar-sweet. While the alcohol pricks on your tongue and you search for more tasting notes, you quickly taste a coffee flavor. Also fruit is indispensable in this whisky, as well as wood from the barrel.
    • Finish
      85 85
Fruit, coffee with sugar, peat and caramel. Well .. nice! It is unfortunate that 70% is quickly gone from the finish, but the other 30% is nice and stays longer.

  18. LittlePeat scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    Color: light straw
Nose: wood smoke, pine nuts, ornamental quince fruit (spicy & aromatic). The fruitiness is "bright" and just spicy.
Palate: strong, spicy, clear wood smoke, light fruitiness, pine nuts.
Finish: medium to long, smoky, fruity, slightly metallic.
Comment: I can not say exactly what I think of that, but I like it. And for years, although my taste otherwise changes constantly. Two other smoky AnCnocks did not convince me.

  19. Jambon scored this whisky 81 points Expert Junior

Peaty but not too heavy. Nice long finish.

  20. Bosi scored this whisky 78 points Specialist

No whisky, where the world stops drinking, but not the worst from the peated range of AnCnoc.
    • Nose
It rises to Ardmore-like mineral smoke in the nose. This is relatively strong for the low ppm number. Below are honey, some linseed oil, lemon juice and chalk.
    • Taste
A touch of ash quickly gives way to a chocolaty sweetie and some pepper. The mineral elements remain.
    • Finish
Unfortunately, the finish is relatively short and lets the youthfulness shine through.

  24. HunterRomario scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Yeah, this is solid whisky, sitting more than An Cnoc Rutter.
    • Nose
Lighter style whipped whisky, fresh, grassy, strawberry, with citrus influences, but we also find festive delight (chestnut, sugar wool). And, of course, peat, that's enough. (87 b)
    • Taste
The smell I like, but the taste is even better. A good portion of peat, citrus, ash, a little bit of white wine (she and that color is like white wine), pepperiness and oiliness. There is also a honey sweetness, a bitter and salty, and it dries out. (89 b)

I like this, I think it is worth the money
    • Nose
Smells really peaty, like a stronger Kilkerran 12 and its a sweet peat and sweet cigar smoke type of peat smell mixed with brine. The peat grows and there is masses of cream with bitter apple.
    • Taste
The peat is all at the front then the cream arrives followed by a little bitter apple so the palate gives what the nose indicated here.

The cream and peat mix well together and the fruit is just about right, mainly apple with a little plum
    • Finish
      Approaching medium

For me also falls into the category "interesting experiment, nice to have tried the times". The collector is happy, 'I do not have to drink a whole bottle of it, for ~ 60 € certainly not.
    • Nose
dry white wine, slightly sour, cold ash, isopropanol, new plastic, some vanilla and milk chocolate
    • Taste
Pepper, overripe white grape, pepper, milk chocolate, pepper, slightly tingling, fairly dry mouthfeel
    • Finish
quite long, pepper, milk chocolate, very dry, slightly bitter smoke

  28. rottendon scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Compared to the Rutter a much more interesting nose, in the mouth then very similar, on the finish even shorter and without any accents. Here, too, is a somewhat ambitiously acclaimed Schlabber Whisky.

Notes from an online chat tasting.
    • Nose
Amazing, 2.5ppm more smoke and the first is not felt. For a nice sweetness of roasted almonds. Now comes the smoke with a sour component. Acts completely different than the Rutter. I do not have any more menthol, but it is also more prominent and the weaker smoke makes it even more prominent. The smoke will become more apparent over time, but remains completely different in profile. No plaster, but cold campfire or house fire. The acid is not a lemon, rather a bit of a disinfectant. Heather yes, pine needles, not really, rather wet day in the mixed forest with rotting leaves and mushrooms. Definitely more interesting than the Rutter. Heats up even more disinfectant, lysoform. Actually nothing else ...
    • Taste
As gentle as the rutter. Do they also use alcohol? The menthol is more pronounced here, the sweetness much more restrained. The mouthfeel here too rather watery. The Fehlnede bitterness is positive!
At the second swallow, more sweetness than the opposite, but rather dry. At the end, it adds a hint of bitterness and some black pepper.
    • Finish
Even shorter, even less concise than the rutter. At the second sip, the mixture of light acidity and bitterness on the palate, as well known by the Rutter. Here he also warms the chest again. Nevertheless, he goes faster and "residue-free" than the Rutter.

Interesting thing, but the price of a bottle is a ride, it's not that good either. The taste is very good, the smell is good too, but the reverie is pretty flat and insignificant.
    • Nose
Combination of smoke, light floral tones, pineapple, oranges and malt.
    • Taste
In the smell of smoke, pungent spice, then gum, skin, green sour apples, peaches, oranges and a pinch of salty. The taste is quite full and surpasses in its complexity the fragrance with an emphasis on fruity acuteness - good
    • Finish
The mouthpiece is short and smoother - again, of course, it smells like smoke in combination with skin, bitter coffee with milk and a salt finish.
