To be completely honest; I’m not blown away by this as I was by the Sherry Solist (which I have yet to give another go, so fingers crossed). Not complaining, though, this is a good whisky. I like the complexity and ‘weird’ character of this, which makes it very interesting to taste. But, saying that I absolutely must have a bottle of this, would be a lie.
    • Nose
Vanilla sweetness at first, then a bit of sawdust. There’s another explicitly sweet aroma here; something like gummy bears or jelly beans. I get a bit of coconut now too. Big malt as well, really the kind I would expect from a whisky in an old, first fill bourbon cask. A perfume-like note now, as if walking into a woman’s dressing room right after she sprayed some on herself. Ah yes, clear coconut now again. Trying to discover some more fruit here, but other than (maybe) a slight hint of banana I don’t really get any. Interesting, weirdly complex nose this has.
    • Taste
Quite a big hit of alcohol, even with water added. Vanilla sweetness is first to arrive again, and now I get quite a bit more fruity things; Tropical (not surprising) fruits like pineapple, banana again and maybe something like mango or papaya. Creamy on the tongue, with some good oak tingling through. Really quite sweet now, with again vanilla and maybe even some sweet chocolate. Hard to find the coconut now. A hint of pepper too, quite spicy suddenly. Maybe even ginger or lemongrass, that same prickly sensation.
    • Finish
Warming and sweet. Quite long. Vanilla leading the march, with the tropical fruit and light spice following. The big malt returns at the end, leaving a nice and lingering, sweet finish.
