Balmenach is one of those distilleries that does not appear on my radar very often. This is only my 11th encounter with this noble unknown from the Speyside. It’s one of these young malts that appeared in the Connoisseurs Choice series, a few years ago by now. In 2014 and 2017 I tasted a similar vatting from Gordon & Macphail, but was not very impressed. I confess that my expectations are in the same vein.

A light sour nose on apples, pears and gooseberries, white bread and even some cardboard and wood shavings as if I’m standing in a carpenter’s workshop. Stale ale. Dry. I’m afraid this nose does not rock my boat.

On the palate I can taste the influence of the sherry casks with sultanas and some honey, but at the same time it’s quite bitter on agrums, zest included. White pepper and some liquorice. Again fairly dry and even makes me reach for a glass of water. That’s never a good sign.

That drying effect continues in the medium long finish and the pepper also makes itself felt once more. Some gooseberries at the death.

Well, expectations were low and even those were not met. I’ve had much better Balmenach. This had better be blended away, I’m afraid. Thx for the sample, Benny!

    • Nose
Fresh butter, whipped cream, caramel. A little alcohol. It evolves but a style of "light sherry", with a little chocolate.
    • Taste
Fruity, young, straight, simple, both fresh and greedy with its small batch of spices.
    • Finish
Lack of evolution, a little monolithic.

Overall, it's still a "daily dram deluxe".

Vanilla, grain, dough, meat broth, salt, lemon juice, underserved cherry, duchess, yellow apple, sawdust. Fluffy and flowery!

A young and damp temper, but quite diverse, with rudiments of complexity, will go for a beginner tasting lover; The sherry refills are certainly felt, but I was sure that the bourbon was here too, but no.
    • Nose
Open, dry, first nose - apples and light beer; processed board, fruit and berry notes, wood dust, malt, carpentry workshop, thinner, raisins, herbal shades.
    • Taste
Sharp with pronounced bitterness, then raisins, sweetness, oak, grapefruit crust, coniferous-resin shades.
    • Finish
Spicy, fresh, grapefruit crust, cereal notes, a little berry berry, yeast dough, sweet and sour berry tints.

It reminds me of the Inchmurrin 18, which I tried some time ago, sweet, but also sour, light sauerkraut notes, as the Loch Lomond whiskys often have. The tannins are also quite strong, the alcohol is restrained. Overall, quite flat

He gets better with water, but not really good. As part of a blind tasting tasted.
    • Nose
a touch of alcohol, sour, citrus notes, fresh
    • Taste
sweet and sour, vanilla, citrus here, a touch of malt, then tannins from the oak
    • Finish
slight sweetness and the tannins remain from the oak

  7. NamorX68 scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
fruity, spicy, light fruits, pear, apricot, vanilla, slightly sweet but also slightly sour.
    • Taste
      Creamy, light sweetness, spicy, fruity
    • Finish
      medium long, dry, liquorice

Big, fast drops indicate a drinking strength. The whisky is light and unfortunately shows a slight alcoholic pungency, the taste and the finish unfortunately do not have the complexity of the nose. The whole thing affects me unfortunately very Obstler-haft

    blind tasting
    • Nose
red apples and an alcoholic note are the first impression, sweet, malt, light sherry
    • Taste
Light body, slightly sharp onset, light sherry notes again, sweeter, a hint of strawberries and plums, slightly oaky spicy, sour, acts like a stone fruit brandy
    • Finish
In the finish, the oak dominates, cereals, again the almonds, slight bitterness, alcohol and ... he is gone. Only the bitterness stays for a while.

Straw yellow, reminiscent of a Riesling, so laughs the Balmenach from the glass.
Sherrynoten are immediately visible in the nose. There are dried fruit and rum raisins, but also dark chocolate and some toffee. In the background there are still light, grassy notes and a hint of citrus flavors.
First, a peppery pungency surprised, then a slightly sweet side comes to light, There are also malt and cereal, while the mouth is slightly oily. With every sip, a feeling of dryness becomes stronger.
The finish is long and leaves the sharpness on the tongue.
An altogether very light whisky. The taste does not follow the promises of the nose. Surprisingly, the sherry does not take place in the mouth.
