Great to taste a Ardbeg from long ago. This one is more into the tar kind of peat than just smoke. Sweet malt, with cooked fruits and a rather gentle character. This abv should be a bit higher, but not a weak body.
    Tasting Van der Boog, Rijswijk.

In the nose unmistakably a Ardbeg long gone times, clear smoke with beautifully integrated sweet malt notes. In the mouth he is a bit weaker than in the nose, maybe 43% would have done him rather well. The malty sweetness comes out clearly. From the body, he does not approach the OA's, who came to the market a short time later. The 1975-he, which was first bottled under Glenmorangie brings here in comparison significantly more oiliness. The here tested 74 of GM would have done here a few percent more alcohol good.
And please always note: These are personal, subjective taste impressions.

    Ardbeg 1974/1996, 40%, G & M Connoisseurs Choice
Blessed old Ardbeg without a peat explosion but with a lot of fruit. In the nose that gives pear, peach and apricot, with salt, iodine and also a nice tuft of soft peat. In the taste wood joins the fruit and the peat. Seaweed also and a slight spiciness. Elegance in the superlative! Long finish on sweet peat and herbs. Nice balance between fruit, salt and peat, and everything so soft ... clean! Maybe he would score higher on a higher alcohol percentage, but the subtle soft character of this whisky is perhaps his greatest 'strength'. 91/100 http://onversneden.com/2010/03/30/twee-ardbegs-1974/

An interesting bottle I once tasted at place where they serve a luxurious/rare selection of whiskies. Some smokiness, but yet that salty sweetness with some nice hints of oak.

    Interesting mild furniture policy note
