- I’ve had this Komagatake quite some time, and straight out of the bottle it was so explosive it was almost like my grandma’s smelling salts. Time, and oxygenation have calmed things down, but I’m still struggling with this one to be honest. Whilst displaying a 3 year old age statement is commendable, it’s hard to get over the raw youthfulness of this whisky and the strange collection of aromas and flavours. The vegetal and meaty notes are certainly interesting but, I find them rather imbalanced and jarring without water and meshed better but dulled down with. I’ve seen some very good reviews for this bottling, but alas, it’s not one for me.
Fairly acrid and arguably raw. Once you get beyond the initial notes of new make spirit and copper there are some more interesting aromas to discern - fresh barley, corn, mushrooms and cabbage all provide a really umami-driven experience. There’s little discernible sherry influence here barring some light honey sweetness and perhaps unsmoked tobacco. Resting lessens the youthful elements and adds a layer of meatiness and maltiness to the affair.
On the one hand light, grassy and with fresh fruit salad, on the other, syrupy, meaty and with a heavy underlying varnish flavour. A dash of water greatly improves the balance here – there’s some buttered corn, vanilla and mossy earthiness. Quite some salinity going on for a good salty tang.
Medium to long, very salty and fairly astringent.
- Honnemment I do not know what to think ... It's special, but it's only 3 years old, the distillate behind seems nice although removed from the influence of ripening ... In short, this whisky leaves me perplexed ...
It's young, but the alcohol is not too aggressive. By cons, it's damn pain! I do not know if it was voluntary or not, and although it does not bother me personally, it may not please everyone ... Otherwise, a light peat out of the bottle, which fades gradually to aeration. We are more on the side gourmet Sherry / chocolate than fruity. In the end a rather special nose I must say.
More peaty than the nose, we also find the chocolate and coffee aromas of the nose. Mostly drinkable without dilution. Powerful and affirmed. The water reveals even more peat but also more this side suffers / foul.
A bitter side and acid unpleasant. Salt too. Average length.
- a bit thin, but if you have nothing else nearby, you can drink it. Slight sherry flavor, could be that the wood dominates. Be sure to drink first if you have a degus, unless the others are worse. It goes down compared to big Japanese whiskys.
in German: when saufe vil with kollega confused for probire, you the crass at first, because afterwards nothing good. little water vil drunk, vil water little drunk. that is the phrase of Claudio, almost like Pitagoras or Euclid-Sazz, which you do not understand anyway. You look awesome shit, if vil drink this, because vil strong. can start your black BMW instead of with bensin, the same tastes, if 1 cherry pure, and Musse shake, understand nothing? that is pure make 1 monscherrii, without chocolate, only the driin for pure make is no matter the bensin crass, dude.
- an uncompromising young whisky for powerful peat lovers who are not afraid of sulfur!
Rather austere and young and too much suffering
much more peaty in the mouth and quite explosive
- very seppial, not disgusting but dispensable ...

- Shinshu Mars 3 yo 2011/2014
'Komagatake' (57%, OB, Japanese malt, 5200 bottles) This baby ex-sherry cask and American white
oak cask. Absolutely love it that they proudly state 'aged 3 years' on the
label. I must add that the 'Revival' version ad been much to my liking in April
this year (WF 85). Colour: deep gold. Nose: of course it's young, and of course
the casks have done a large part of the job, but if you're not firmly against
custard, you'll enjoy this. White chocolate, praline, vanilla, malt bar, honey,
maple syrup, cake. You see what I mean. With water: raw malt, lilies, perhaps a touch of cooked
cabbage (I'm not saying sulphur, not all), a pleasant mustiness… Smells a bit
of spent lees at times. Dead yeast? Mouth (neat): yes. There's an honest youth
in this, some caf? latte, some buttered popcorn, some Virginia tobacco, some
salted butter caramel (in Breton fashion), and an oaky grassiness in the
background that puts it straighter - or it would have become too
smooth/rounded. With water: very good. Earthy, grassy, pleasantly beerish, with
a little mandarin to add pleasures… Finish: long, and really salty. Where does
this salt come from? From the oak? Comments: only one word, smart.SGP:552 - 86
