    Refined

    The Balvenie Thirty, the 30 years old from this well-known Speyside distillery, was launched in 2014. I had the fortune of trying this at the whisky festival in Ghent. The label proudly claims ‘Traditional Oak & Sherry Casks’. When Balvenie says traditional oak, they mean American bourbon casks;

Oooh… yes, this is divine. A delicious panoply of sweet fruit with apricots, plums, baked apples and sultanas. The whole is drenched in flowery honey. A leaf of mint. Hints of coffee with chocolate. Beeswax. Gooseberries and nectarines kick in. Even some raspberry in the background. Mild, elegant and simply grand. Refined is the word I am looking for.

Good body. Oily to creamy. Immediately honey-sweet with a lovely spicy edge. Intensely fruity on the same fruit as the nose, joined by bitter oranges, mocha, lime and mirabelles. The fruit evolves towards the caramelized and dried variety. The oak delivers some cloves and black pepper. Great balance.

The mint and honey return in the long finish.

A grand Balvenie that again demonstrates the importance of good casks. If the whisky is still this lively and fruity after three decades, then you know what you are doing. Top dram. Between 750 and 1.000 EUR, depending on where you look. Google is your friend.

N: Perfumed fruits [apricots, apples and plums - proper summer ripe orchard collection] in a sweet floral-honey glaze, Brora like.
T: That rich concentration of sweet>bitter is just what id hoped for on the nose. With a big arrival and presentation, we are talking intense fruit sugars, a touch caramelised - somewhere between fruit~to~jam with some syrup-treacle notes also.
F: There’s a distinctive spearmint note before the fruits come back coupled with honeyed tannins. Vibrant yet relaxed, medium-long finish
C: Let’s not speak of casks and grain balance with this one, this Balvenie has become way more than the sum of its parts.

Molt slightly disappointing at first, with a very long time of aging, the fragrance is subtle, not rich, the depth is missing as a class; the taste is more consistent with age, the finish also tries not to drop the bar, but in general - not a fountain, with time the fragrance is barely revealed, mainly due to the enhancement of bourbon derivatives, the taste becomes more honey, live. As a result, the price / quality ratio is not encouraging, for such money you can buy a whisky class higher, and if you want it, it's better to pay attention to Tun'y, the same 1509 I got more positive emotions than 30-ka
    • Nose
Restrained, processed wood, furniture varnish, cinnamon, nuts, pickled cucumbers, needles.
    • Taste
Powerful, rich, sweet and sour, tart oak, lemon peel, limoncello, lollipops, creamy notes, honey.
    • Finish
Spicy, creamy-oak, a little red pepper, cinnamon, pencil Koh-i-nor, orange peel.

My experience of this is that it is foremost a nosing whisky. In general many Balvenies have all the makings of true greatness but always so mild, like in a lilliputian, miniature -quantity. I give this an 88 because of the really great nose and good aftertaste: the taste as such would be closer to 85 than knocking on the 90 threshold.
    • Nose
Honey and faint fruitiness, a very light toffee, coffee and chocolate, some bitterish fresh fruit: nectarine, cloudberry, raspberry and cranberry. A hint of beewax. Good and balanced though rather mild. Refined oak, dried fruit, maple syrup, dark and delicate coffee.
    • Taste
Faintly bitterish, honey. With time the initial pungency gives a bit hose but lacks behind the superb nose. Some dried fruit, toffee and mocha. Lime, a bit of oystery savouriness, fresh yellow plums. Tends to be quite short.
    • Finish
Pleasant, but very tender: fruits and berries as in the nose, mild honey. Turns very delicate with time.

A very balanced and elegant dram, on the palate honey, oranges, quinces and mirabelles, in the medium long finish some chocolate. On the other side I hoped for more sherry flavours, more richness and more depth
