Highland Park 22 yo 1992/2014 (59.6%, Cadenhead, Sherry Cask, 234 bottles)
Colour: full gold. Nose: hold on, Cadenhead, there’s a typo, this must
have been a rum cask! And a ‘heavy’ one, Trinidad or Jamaica or
something, because I find these olivy dried fruits and these orangey
bananas… or something. And earth, tobacco, wee whiffs of cow stable,
fermenting oranges, almond oils, walnuts, mustard… Now maybe was it some
sherry wood-matured rum? Forgot to tell you, I love this nose. With
water: clean earth and leather, if you see what I mean. Mouth (neat):
a.m.a.z.i.n.g. Green lemons, yellow tobacco, pink olives, blue peat and
strong agaves (rather than sugar cane). I may have muddled up my
adjectives, apologies. With water: maybe was it a sherry cask indeed.
Tart oranges, salt, a touch of antiseptic and always quite some tobacco.
Finish: long, on the same notes plus an earthy/leathery side. Fresh
limoncello in the aftertaste. Comments: how embarrassing, Cadenhead did
it again. To be very honest, the last thing I want is to sound as if I
was biased toward those good people, and I’ve even considered not
reviewing the new ones for a while, but that would be just… stupid. And
rather masochistic. Between us, the best thing that happened to Scotch
malt whisky in the last two years was Cadenhead’s incredible revival.
Not that they were down, of course, not at all, but there… Loud (albeit
    uncomfortable) applause! SGP:552 - 91 points.

Tasted at day 5 of the Usquebaugh Society blind tasting competition 2015. Only had 15 minutes to taste. Tasted with water.

My guess was a Arran, 08yo at 57%.
    • Nose
Sweet honey, hay, pears, grapes, some hints of red fruit
    • Taste
Full, sweet, red fruit, honey, malty, some banana, peppery, oak, grassy
    • Finish
Not that long, malty, peppery, some oak, grassy

    Blind tasting of a sample.
    • Nose
Hazelnut, caramel and raspberry. Pepper and a whiff of peat smoke. Oily and slightly grassy. After a while quite some honey. With some cherry and citrus.
    • Taste
Pepper, caramel, orange, peat, honey, wax and cherry. With water some leather.
    • Finish
Caramel, peat, hazelnut, salt, honey, cereals, pistachio and a whiff of cigar leaves.

just one drop of water does a lot of good and upgrades this whisky from a masterpiece to a great masterpiece. Ganz grosses Kino.

  8. Bishlouk scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

The sherry sublimates here the markers of Highland Park, and does not occult them at all. A perfect whisky at Christmas time. And not a trace of sulfur, in addition. A high class HP.
    • Nose
Dry, candied smoke occupies the main place at the beginning. Yellow fruits (apricot head) stewed. Notes of caramelized almonds. Candy sugar Christmas spices; and after aeration a very slight coastal breeze.
    • Taste
At first sweet and sweet, the flavors rise in power, carried by alcohol that is well integrated. Peppery tingle, mineral smoke, dry slate. But also caramelized yellow fruits and dried apricot. A very complex mouth.
    • Finish
Average. Swirls of mineral smoke rise up into the nostrils. A pinch of salt, and apricot peel.

    Cadenhead's own tasting note:

Nose: red berries, tangerines, cocktail cherries. Very fruity: marzipan, marshmallows, dunnage and earthy.

Palate: Earthy. Red peppercorns, dried fruits; dunnage, melon, winter fruits and oily.

Finish: medium long: oily with refined hints of peat
