Nice speysider, but little bitter note I did not like.

  2. lincolnimp scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

This is an easy sipper, I remember the first time I tried this was at the Fiddichside Inn, Craigellachie and I really liked it.
Fruity, creamy and spicy, simple profile but it really works.

Oh Aultmore... why don't we become friends?
You have so many beautiful flavors.
But by the way, there is always a bad grade that bothers me :-/
    • Nose
Creamy sweet. pear and green apple. Herbs. herbal Apricot. Cool (Ethereal). Light nut.
      Later wood and earth.
    • Taste
Creamy-sweet and cooling onset (mint?). Slight spiciness of white pepper. Very subtle vanilla.
    • Finish
Medium - long. A lot of oak leaves a tingle on the tongue. getting dry.

  4. ffmdino did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

since it is mostly dry, it is not a malt for me
    • Nose
earthy, raspberry becomes stronger, vanilla pastry (tart), young malt, vanilla + grass, some oak

from the 1920s: very fresh, slightly lemony, malty, moist wood, slightly mineral, becomes earthy, minimal leather, mushy berries
    • Taste
      round and creamy
very tart!!, sugar (burnt), oak, malt older, somewhat bitter, pressed cardboard
    • Finish
      short to medium long
      tart, chocolate ~55-60%, late spicy

      slightly astringent on the tongue

Indeed a nice surprise at a small blind tasting recently. Never considered buying this one myself for some odd reason. Maybe too expensive in comparison to other good 12 yo's?! Anyhow, it is said this one's about to disappear from the European market. Maybe I'll snatch a bottle while it is still there. :-)

This is quite simply a great buy at the price. Accessible yet rewarding for the patient sipper.
    • Nose
      86 86
Bread and malt dominate with a little sourness following up.
    • Taste
      84 84
Not overly complex, bread and malt again are the main notes. Well executed. A summer dram for the fall months if that makes sense.
    • Finish
      83 83
Oak, more malt and grapefruit peel. Decent length.

Very dry with notes of dry hay and dry wood. A note of vanilla with a hint of lemon. Very herbal with green herbs all over. Such as parsley, chives and oregano. A strange note of eggs. Followed by hints of hops and grass and at the end a note of barley.
    • Taste
      86 86
Less herbal, but pretty sweet. Vanilla complemented by caramel and applecrumble. Followed by sweet notes of anice and white sugar. A hint of galia melons. Dry notes of hay, oak and malt. At the end a note of white pepper.
    • Finish
      82 82
Fairly short. Spicy notes like vanilla and ginger. Followed by notes of grass and mint.

Quite basic and bland to my taste, weirdly aggressive palate
    • Nose
      83 83
ice, mild sweetness, orange, milk, flowers, apples, vanilla, plants, malt, cereals, meadow honey, salted caramel, yellow fruit
    • Taste
      80 80
creamy, soap, intense vanilla, apples, dark chocolate, yogurt, later bitter malt, especially hot
    • Finish
      80 80
raisins, cucumber, intense vanilla, roasted almonds, fruit brandy, fades in apples and crosses

  15. ChrisSym did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

    • Nose
The first impression is very perfumed with a little honey sweetness, fine vanilla and oak in the background. With pear, if not yet ripe. A touch of herbs compliments the sweetness pleasantly. Overall very mild and calm.
    • Taste
Again the perfumed sweetness, floral. Then comes the oak seasoning, which gives a nice contrast. The honey can also be felt again. No rough edges. Would definitely do well as a summer whisky.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long with floral notes and oak. Distant impression of aromatic campfire smoke. Getting dry in the end.

  16. hafssol scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

Pale colour and thin body for a Speysider. Actually "foggy" and wintertime dram, with warming oak notes and lot of grass-vanilla-lemon flavours. Its round, warm, somehow understated taste, can be fully appreciated on a cold winter night, but I bet its light body can fit also in a warmer season. Balanced and remarkably complex for its age, it also displays a good quality/price ratio.

    Less is More

In an attempt to promote their distilleries, John Dewar & Sons launched the series ‘The Last Great Malts’ in 2014 with releases from Brackla, The Deveron (aka Glen Deveron, so basically from the Macduff distillery), Aulmore, Craigellachie and Aberfeldy. This Aultmore 12 years old Foggie Moss is named after the hills to the north of the distillery where the Burn of Auchinderran springs, the big burn Aultmore uses the water from in their production. Aultmore actually means ‘big burn’ so the circle is complete.

Fresh nose on apples and vanilla, honey and yellow fruit, devoid of spices. A bit of lime, pebbles in the sun, fresh rhubarb. It’s not complex, but it certainly smells good.

The body is just fine. Immediately sweet and fruit on lime and rhubarb again, joined by honey, pear drops, fresh pineapple juice and green garden herbs. All of this around a malty heart. Some soft pepper appears to give it some power.

The finish lingers surprisingly long. Again on apples, but now some nuts appear. A light bitter note at the death.

Less is more. Fine entry level Aultmore, around 50 EUR.

    knitted quite simply
    nice fruity sweet
thanks to the slightly dirty nose and the tingling oak in the taste and finish, it won't get boring
I like it very much, on a par with other 12yo OAs
    • Nose
quite sweet and fruity, but also a bit dirty o musty, like refill sherry
      behind it vanilla, cream candy
the sweet malt comes out more strongly with water
    • Taste
      milder, quite oily and sweet
then tingly and again the cream candies
with water the paint becomes even more oily and malty
      hardly any oak
    • Finish
      short to medium length
      fruity-sweet with the sparkling oak
with water, the sparkling is missing here too

Strange thing...first opening and tasting after being uncorked - way too much of spice and bitterness. After two weeks of bottle relaxing aaand - here we are, the delicious Speyside single malt) Fruity, so fresh, the meadow honey and no bitterness at all. What a tricky scotch!

  25. Koning scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

This was my favourite bottle of last summer! It's incredibly fresh, certainly a high quality entry level OB! Made me try other Aultmores, but this is still the best for me so far.
    • Nose
      86 86
Spring in a glass: grassy, lemon, green apple, hops, and freshly cut flowers. A bit sweeter after a while with apple juice, limoncello and malt sugars, but also some coriander, fresh laundry and kiwi's appear.
    • Taste
      88 88
Full and clear on rhubarb, citrus fruits, redcurrants and yogurt. Various herbs, almost like a sterrenmunt tea. Vanilla fudge and honey provide sweetness, while it also has a mineral edge.
    • Finish
      84 84
More fruity now (citrus, apple, strawberry). Fennel seed, roasted peanuts, a bit mineral again. Maybe some cardboard, which brings it down.

If you like Speyside whiskies (like I do) and you want to try a decent priced standard bottling (I paid €35) at 46% of a lesser known distillery then this might be a good option. To me it stands out from the pack as it's less fruity-honey but instead has a very herbal side to it.

Entry level whisky but in the top of it’s class. A high quality, convincingly bottle of Aultmore. It is NCF and it got a very light level of normal filtration, if there has been any. With water and a little time a beautiful thick Scottish mist will appear!
    • Nose
Soft, sweet and herbal. Apple, pear, lime, almonds and butter at first. It is really a very full flavoured nose. Entry level wise this is a complex and tastefull whisky. Without water a little hard and mineral, with water clearly more subtle and the sweetness comes through in full. All of a sudden there is a full experience of honey and vanilla.
    • Taste
Without water a tough spicy fellow. With water it gets more smooth and more rounded. It starts with some dried wood influences. After that, herbs and nuttiness dominate the palate. Also some white pepper. The sweetness is more in the back, while it’s more present on the nose. Also a wee hint of lime peeks around the corner.
    • Finish
Suprisingly long for a 12yo with a light maturation. Mild wood influences are followed by sweet herbs and spices and a honeylike sensation. Dried spices at the very end for quite a while.

Nose: strong and light-fruity, some cereals. Straightforward. Mouth: fresh, slightly bitter
Finish: fresh, light bitterness, slightly mineral - lick granite, then you have it, but wash the stone well before. In conclusion, it can be said that this is a very crisp Speysider, little barrel, a lot of freshness, not somehow new-makig artificial. Has something, but is not a ripper.

Clean and fruity, what I expect a classic speyside/ highland whisky to smell like. The only downside, is the spice grows with intensity, the longer it's in the glass.

Sweet blossom, green apple, biscuit, pineapple juice, nuts and dunnage warehouse.

Aultmore 12YO is a good initial malt. It’s an enough sweet with pear note, with strong notes of wood and cereal, with spices. The palate appears with sweet pear note, and goes with grass, wood, black pepper, hay notes. The finish is a middle, spicy and dry with green pears note. It’s a quiet good for drink with friends during patties.

Nose: floral and slighty vegetal, fruity with fresh pears and apples, butter. Water and breathing time brings out vanilla and some roasted almonds.

Taste: light but not a thin mouthfeel, vanilla with a fresh fruitiness of pear and ripe galia melon, some vegetal oiliness and black pepper.

Finish: buttery and nutty with a spiciness of black pepper and bitter white grapes.

A real nice entry level Aultmore, fairly priced considering quality and presentation of what's in the bottle.

    • Nose
Pretty freshness for this nose dominated by lemon and green apples. Vanilla, smells of cereals honeyed and embellished with fruit in syrup (peaches), plant aromas (wildflowers, hay, eucalyptus) keep them company with a certain happiness.
    • Taste
Surprise!. The mouth is sweeter than envisaged, taking up the spirit of the nose: fruity and herbaceous notes so, with a little more spices (pepper), a bit of anise, and a kind of effervescent bitterness (beer blonde?) underlying.
    • Finish

    Whiskyfun:
    Aultmore 12 yo (46%, OB, +/-2015)
I have to say I find the packaging totally superb. Well done Stephen
and gang! The strength is cool too, and so is the colour. Colour: white
wine. Nose: starts with cider and beer, in a very fresh,
country-inspired manner. It’s not one of these
sexy-commercial-travel-retail Speysiders at all, rather a pure and
slightly raw expression of all things malty, grassy, and mineral. Apple
peelings, rhubarb, wet limestone, candle wax… This is malt whisky!
Mouth: it’s full and fresh, with oranges and, once again, rhubarb, plus
some honey and a drop of tinned pineapple juice. Rather fruitier, but
body and structure remain firm and ‘honest’. Excellent maltiness.
Finish: quite long, maltier, with roasted peanuts, cider apples, and
malty ale. Malty and mineral aftertaste. Comments: it’s funny, but this
feels like an independent bottling. Very malty and pretty elegant. Kind
of un-commercial, in a way. Beats many entry-level Speysiders in my
    book. SGP:452 - 83 points.

A very nice spring whisky that you can enjoy in a sociable round - I had the same association with a long old wooden table on a lawn in an orchard with many good friends around it. But it also offers interesting and complex flavors to discover that one does not immediately expect. For me, a surprisingly nice new discovery and he will probably become a standard in my closet. After all the heavy sherrylastigen whisky of the last time it is very pleasant, once again to enjoy a pure Bourbon cask whisky. I seriously consider saving on the rather expensive 25 year old Aultmore ...
    • Nose
As soon as the bottle is opened, fruitiness flows directly into the nose, reminiscent of a sweet compote. In the glass then I have mirabelle plums and crunchy apples, honey, a grassy flower meadow with spicy herbs including buzzing bees, fresh hay, alcohol is barely perceptible despite 46%.
    • Taste
In expectation of a light and airy whisky am surprised by the strong start then already! A spicy tingling spiciness with sweet fruit, some licorice, again the herbs, light oak notes make it drier to finish.
    • Finish
Aromatic herbs, anise, warmth and fruity sweetness make for a very pleasant and very long finish

Well, that's young, I would say. The barrels were certainly not bad, but that does not tear it out.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Really interesting, even the second blind tasting, where he does not convince me. Last time he had gotten 79 points, this time it was only 75, on average 77. Granted, this time it was the seventh malt in the series, not the very best condition, but he just can not really like me.
The lax impression of the first time has also confirmed by the way, I have typed here again to 40%.
    • Nose
Right typical bourbon notes immediately, yellow fruit in honey, the alcohol is well integrated. Clean, round, without surprises. Heated the fruits disappear, what remains are caramel and honey. On the second try a light but clear, salty sweat note and tons of malt, very grainy, rather little fruit and sweetness.
    • Taste
Fairly sweet, honey, gruff alcohol, bitter notes at the end, metallic crackling. The second time less sweet, a little more mellow, still young.
    • Finish
The sweetness goes, bitterness stays a bit longer, medium.

A beautiful elegant nose with no junk and alcohol. The taste is stronger than expected after the smell, but good. The finish fits in harmoniously. I like it.

    blind tasting
    • Nose
Hay, malt, caramel, lime, as tightly woven and rather discreet. The lack of intensity makes the smell elegant. Something oak, lemongrass, everything gets a little more acidic.
    • Taste
Cool and despite the soft body strong onset, sweet vanilla fight with acidic citrus notes, mixed with delicate oak, white pepper is also present, later come slightly bitter notes
    • Finish
Soft oak and malt, a reminder of the citrus fruits, medium long

As far as entry-level whiskies go, this is pretty good. No cask wizardry, just good straight forward malt whisky.
    • Nose
Lime and sweet apple are performing a balancing act. In the background there's some honest maltiness. Also honey, vanilla and a hint of shoe polish.
    • Taste
In a nutshell: citrus fruits and spices. The arrival is a bit peppery, what follows is are limes, but also some oranges, to be a bit more specific. Less prominent, but also noticeable are sweet apples and peaches.
    • Finish
This whisky ends on malty and grassy notes. Finish is on the shorter side.

Slightly lax, the nose is beautiful, but taste and finish can not go along. Drinking Malt.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Amazing that I felt so weak at 46%. Maybe day shape.
    • Nose
First apples, slightly fermented, malt, a little salt. Later tropical fruits are added, lychees and papayas. Warms strong vanilla. An interesting, fresh and slightly dirty nose.
    • Taste
Slightly fruity, then comes honey, not too sweet, oak joins.
    • Finish
In the finish, the honey sweetness is slow, the oak underlines the finish and in the background is still slightly fruittic acid. Short to medium long the whole thing.

    (Rating interval 83-86)
    • Nose
Soft vanilla, creamy mineral, citrus and honey. After a
few minutes in the glass there is peaches, vanilla fudge and wine gums.
    • Taste
the arrival is slightly cold, vanilla ice cream and nutmeg, some additional wood
spice. The vanilla becomes more floral and intact during the development with
more mineral, oak and citrus, both grapefruit and lemon.
    • Finish
It finishes of with vanilla, black pepper and some bitter
grapefruit and wood. Even some soft hints of metal or coins.

I have tried many whiskies neat at 46%, this one wasn't at it's best at that volume and needed a touch of water to bring it to life. I bought this in Cost Cutter in Dufftown Scotland. A very pleasant dram at a very reasonable price.
    • Nose
Like standing in a meadow at midday and taking in what's around you like thistle, rapeseed oil, barley, straw bails and wild flowers. There are hints of toffee and apple pie and custard.
    • Taste
Neat it is quite astringent, dry and has a slightly bitter aftertaste. Adding a little water certainly takes the edge off and makes it more palatable with notes of toffee, honey and apricot.
    • Finish
A medium dry, nutty floral finish.

A very pleasant surprise! Lovely summer whisky: great nose of fresh grass, herbs and spices. Fruity sweet taste, quite some initial alcohol which comforts into warming hints of almonds and milk chocolate with an ever so sweet and quite long finish. My first Aultmore and definitely not my last.

Nose: Green. This is what comes to mind first. Fresh cut grass. Honey and some vanilla. Citrus. A slight new make note and a bit of an alcohol bite too. It does feel youngish.

Palate: Rather spirity on entry. Then getting sweeter. Honeyed and citrusy. With lots of sugar. Some milk chocolate, cereals and more sugar and tons of vanilla. Grass. Quite a bit.

Finish: sweet. Drying with grass and traces of sweet chocolate, and cut grass.

    Conclusion:

This is a lovely malt, grassy and herbal, light and sweet with the right combo of honey spice and chocolate, yet it does feel a bit spirity at times, and not as well rounded as one would expect. It is a nice entry level Aultmore. The pricing is a bit over the top, in my opinion, especially if you’re shopping for it in the UK where you can get it for about 50 quid ( a bit less in other places, but stock seems to gone [TWE had it for around 41 quid but it’s gone], which is a lot of money for a 12 year old, when you think of it. Yes, the bottle looks lovely, and all but when you think about other options which are just as worthy (some even better) which cost you 10-15 quid less (HP12, Benromach 10, Talisker 10, just to name a few) It’s really hard to explain why this 12 year old should be priced the way it is. Surely bacardi can try and sell this for a premium, but I do hope the market will force the price to go down and be in par with other 10-12 year olds of the same “league”.

Very happy with this effort of John Dewar's. Great to see another natural coloured whisky on the shelves. A real spicy Speysider this one. Together with the nice packaging and the decent price (we paid 41 euros) we'd quote our friend Paul: "Cannie go wrong with dat!"

Aultmore is one of these lesser known Speyside distilleries. It was founded in 1896 by Alexander Edward (who was also behind Benrinnes and Craigellachie). The name Aultmore is derived from Allt Mòr, the water source of the distillery.
