Whisky Reviews for Glen Albyn 1975

32 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.33 points

  1. Dirk scored this whisky 88 points Super Administrator

The nose might put you off in the beginning but it quickly develops into a nice whisky. I wanted to go higher with this one but it lacks complexity additional complexity. The citric, acidic / glue element is nice in some occasions but might just lean towards the wrong side.
    • Nose
Pears, malty and a freshly opened bucket of glue. Weird combination but not unpleasant. Faint smoky notes which is adding a nice additional layer. Develops into sweet oranges. Others mention acidity, I get more of a sour mineral note.
    • Taste
Surprised by the sweet flavours, pears, honey, small amount of lime. Thick mouthfeel, oranges, mango. Grapefruit giving it a bit of a slightly bitter element. Some apples.
    • Finish
Spicy, malty and a bit of glue. Cooked mash, mineral, spicy. Short to midlong finish. Bitter grapefruits return in the finish. Some pepper / spices again in the finish.

  2. Oldpultnie scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

I gave this whisky 90 points in a review in 2016 and today it's still worth the 90 points for the full 100%.

Strange to me is that the overall rating in 2016 just was a poor 80.91 points. Perhaps it's go to do something with the difference in price for some people where 200 € can make a difference in taste.

    Almost perfect !!
    • Nose
It took some time to open up. At first it was just oil and some pepper, but after a while it was getting sweeter and smoother with a light touch of smoke, soft pears, vanilla and barley sweets.
    • Taste
A subtle sweet entree, not really that oily but very smooth with a nice amount of non overwhelming spices. A well balanced and smooth palate. Fantastic sensation all over the line.
    • Finish
Long finish, sweet, light spicy and very Little wood tones at the end.

  4. wisekycourse scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

On the nose, rather oily sensation, slightly maderized fruits, and lemon on top, some strong spices, then a little dry wood and a floral side appears.
    • Nose
encaustic, waxy, cooked yellow fruits, peppery spices,
then glue, it's airy, wood, fine smoke, lemon, slight mint back

  5. Luigisim scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

It takes some times to open up ..... but then it comes a sniff of clay becoming more and more smooth.

In the body mature pears and mush mallow, very nicely combined. Becoming pleasant and pleasant.

The finish runs through like pure water from a mountain source: fresh and amazing.

N: Given the balloon glass, nosing was next to impossible. It smelt fairly straight ahead/natural, doped/supercharged by a strong & oily abv.
T: Rich, glassy, natural dram. Adding water in the mouth gave for a hugely oily, herbal and sublimely clean/refreshing palate experience. Neat or not, it widened, developing notes of runny toffee.
F: A light finish after a long diminuendo with notes of heavy mineral, herbal liquorice and porridge from neutral/clean/refill wood with a light saline tail.
C: i found this rather sublime in an archetypal kind of way and sourced a bottle [reasonably priced at auction], as soon as i returned home. A style i like.Scores a B+

  7. Whisky-Connaisseur did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

An old but surprisingly fresh dram of
the demolished Glen Albyn distillery. Very attractive and well balanced
with sweet fruit, malted barley, spice and a little
smoke. A splash of water clearly enhances the pleasant mix of
flavours of this single malt. A sophisticated whisky from the past.

I thank Björn Lahmann from Whiskyplaza for the sample!

    • Nose
Fresh and clean on the nose with mint and a flowery (heather?) touch.
Sweet with dried fruits - apricots and pears in particular. Hints of
      smoke in the background with
      a slightly peppery note.
    • Taste
Malty sweet on the palate, accompanied by vanilla, orange marmalade and
liquorice. Slightly smoky with a warming mix of pepper, oak and a whiff
      of cardamom towards
      the finish.
    • Finish
The finish is long and creamy sweet with malted barley. Becomes drier on
the tail with pepper, oak spice and a hint of peat smoke.
With water: Fresh and slightly sweet on the
nose when a few drops of water are added. Increased notes of liquorice
and damped wood in the back. Bold and intense on the palate
with sweet malted barley, orange marmalade and an increasing
warming spiciness of pepper, oak and nutmeg. The finish is of
medium-length, sweet, warm and slightly spicy. Very nice!

  8. The Macallan scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

This rare beauty is a classical example of a Highland malt should be like. No fuss but very straight forward. ACE!!
    • Nose
Full, intense, aromatic and sweet (reduced: heather honey, light smokey and chocolate).
    • Taste
Full, intense and warm (reduced: some peat and very flavorish).
    • Finish
Tasty, sweet and spicy, nice long after glow.
