There is a weird smoke resembling burnt plastic. Peat. Faint sulphur note. Brown sugar, honey like sweetness, clear red wine notes in the background (bitter/tart red berries). Most definitely, this is not a whisky for every occasion, you really need to be in the mood for it! It is not a bad whisky per say, but for sure, it is not great either. Very, very challenging...
    • Nose
      81 81
Burnt plastic with faint sulphur (not my cup of tea) mixed with honey and tart red berries.
    • Taste
      85 85
Nice sweetness, medium complexity, wood tannins are quite present, peat. Nose and taste are a little bit disjointed. A chameleon whisky. Not for beginners!
    • Finish
      82 82
      Short to medium, bitter.

The smell is more extraordinary than the taste.
    • Nose
      40 40
Slightly smoky, some honey, some milk and milk chocolate.
    • Taste
      40 40
Taste is distinctly woody for only ten years.
    • Finish
      40 40
Becomes medium bitter on the tip of the tongue.

Not bad, but also not for me at all. The cask swallowed the distillate whole. Compared to the rest of the evening's lineup (see below), this one was the least Benromach of the lot.

    Tasted with Benromach 10yo 100° proof (85 pts.), Benromach 2006-2018 for Van Wees 59,2% (86), Benromach 1998 20th Anniversary 56,2% (85), Benromach 30yo bot. 2011 (89) and Benromach 35yo bot. 2015 (89).
    • Nose
First nosing reminds me of strongly port-influenced whisky. Dry leathery notes, and some cigars. Meatiness, dried paint, dry red wine, allspice and wine-y butter. I'm not a big fan of this overdone leatheriness. Sulfite, cardboard, and extinguished matches that have already gone cold.
    • Taste
Flattish, except for the dominating wine. The body is kind of limp for a 45 % bottling, but it certainly is filling on account of the assault of dried plums, leather, allspice and syrup. I could see myself enjoying the wine that used to be in this cask, but this whisky not so much. A drying, rough tail.
    • Finish
Hollow except for all the cask-related tastes.

Clearly more cask-driven and more sulphuric than the 2001 version.
    • Nose
Peat, salami, blueberry and salted caramel.
    • Taste
      Peat, salted caramel and blueberry.
    • Finish
Peat, dark chocolate and salted caramel.

On the nose, Bayonne ham from the light peat and on the other side, with sweet red fruit from the 27 months of aging in Hermitage. The two marry well. On the palate, the subtle notes of sweet red wine are balanced with distinct spice. With a mouth feel very Speyside, always. Enthusiasm 4/5

  8. Mannheimer scored this whisky 87 points Expert Junior

Very elegant malt, very balanced, quite complex with great chocolate note
    • Nose
Fruit, vanilla, some mint. Wine influence clearly there, very light smoke in the background
    • Taste
Very complex, oranges, chocolate, strawberries, mint again but rather peppermint
    • Finish
Medium to long, characterized by milk chocolate

Color RussetmuscatNosequite a spectacular combination of smoke and fruits. Not really peaty, but smokey. vanilla and some spiced which i cannot fully place Tastethe tastes is a bit dry, both due to the smoke, but also this dryness you experience with a good heavy red wine. next to the smoke the i find some nice fruits: apples and oranges and some milk-chocolate (which isn't a fruit i guess). nicely balanced. Finishfinish: quite long and a bit dry CommentsWB user Falnor poured me a glass of this one, thank you my friend!

A great use of wood finishes to a whisky. Not your every day dram because of that, but to me extra points.
    • Nose
      A great
mixture of different fruits and smoky touches. Canary melon, apples and tangerines.
A piece of leather. Baked apples with some cinnamon rigth out the oven. Vanilla
cream. Flambé oranges. The smoke isn't dominant, but never leaves and gives it
      something extra.
    • Taste
      The smoke
is much more present in the front, butt the fruit reigns here as well. Sweet
apples, pear, kiwi and some passionfruit. Some spices, very drinkable. A great level of complexity for such a young one.
    • Finish
      Orange
pealings, walnut and brown sugar. The smoke is almost gone.

    Nose:-
Attractive red hue colour. Initial waves of new leather, soft earthy
notes reminds me of Dalmore. Deep ripe fruit note, lightly decay. Palate:- Energetic and expressive. Sweet Orange liquor notes fill up
the palate. With ripe semi sweet raisin, cocoa and vanilla in the
    middle. Delicious.

Finish:- Caramel and chocolate, gently smoke. Echoing.

Complex for less than 10 years. The moderate smoke level of Benromach does not mask the other flavors. Very nicely done.
    • Nose
Intensive and hard. Sandalwood, campfire smoke, honey, red apples (braeburn?), Fresh notes (menthol?), Tangerines, milk chocolate, with a few drops of water, the fruit notes are intensified, cherry and a butter note are added.
    • Taste
Strong onset, sweet, oily, butter, camp fire smoke, BBQ sauce, sandalwood, tobacco, now a bit salty, with water Orange and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), milk chocolate
    • Finish
The smoke lingers and develops into cold ashes, slight tobacco and oak notes. Medium to long

Aroma: ripe fruit, vanilla, cinnamon, eucalyptus / mint
Taste: Intense, sweet and spicy, fruity, light smoke, malt, chocolate
Finish: long, spicy, smoke fades, oak comes up

  16. Mr.Edradour scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Typical wine cask finished whisky, not a simple day by day dram.
    • Nose
Smoke, several fruits, vanilla and some spices in the background
    • Taste
Rich and full bodied, dark fruits, dark chocolate or cacao, peat smoke
    • Finish
      Long lasting

A very enjoyable dram with an amazing colour! Very impressive, delicate
with a pleasant balance of peat smoke, fruit and spice. Dangerously
    quaffable.

    • Nose
Once you open a new bottle there is immediately peat smoke coming
through! Poured into a glass, there's lots of fruit, red apples and a
touch of citrus. A hint of delicate vanilla emerges, underlined by
spice, cinnamon, all complemented by a whiff of peat smoke.
    • Taste
Yes, this is bold, intense and voluminous. Succulent red fruit,
cherries, red gooseberry at the beginning, displaced by a short kick of
bitter orange peel, and finally complemented by creamy chocolate,
lingering spice, vanilla and gentle peat smoke. Very delicate.
    • Finish
The finish is long, warm and mouth-coating with delicate spice, milk chocolate and orange blossom honey with a hint of smoke.

WITH WATER: Now the wine cask is coming through with red wine flavours
and pink grapefruit on the nose, increasing spiciness along with bitter
orange peel on the midpalate, complemented by a sweet fruity finish with
      honey and subtle smoke.

  20. JohannesB scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Very complex and multi-layered but not easy. As is so often the case with whisky from the red wine barrel, this malt also has a very special wood note that will not be for everyone.
    • Nose
Very soft smoke surrounds a sweet and sourish fruit note. Very complex and difficult to differentiate. Granny Smith apples, gooseberries, cranberries and later pineapple and some marzipan. In addition a woody note of the used wine barrels.
    • Taste
Very powerful and spicy with cedar wood, cinnamon, cardamom and slightly stronger smoke, which turns easily into medical. Again cranberries, blackberries and some sweet raspberries.
    • Finish
Ash, menthol, and some grilled marzipan. The fruit notes fade and make room for powerful spice from the oak.

A new one from Benromach tasted at Whisky Festival 2015, ripe in barrels barrels and matured in wine barrels. I would take the whole bottle.
    • Nose
Stronger aroma, orange jam, overripe fruit, lime, cinnamon. There is a light haze of peat smoke above it, a bit of flesh. Warm impression. (86 b)
    • Taste
Nectar, a very juicy flavor, I can! Hardly fruity, sweetish, then spicy. Toast flavor, cinnamon, long, with a little peat. Excellent. (90 b)

  23. p4blo scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

I am not convinced by the wood experiments, perhaps a non-peated spirit would give a clearer impression of what the maturation did.
    • Nose
Very fruity with notes of apples, pears, apricots, oranges and pineapples. Less smoky than the 10YO but some smoke is there too.
    • Taste
Quite thin, although relatively complex. Sweet with sugar cane, vanilla, white chocolate, notes of toffee and a hint of smoke.
    • Finish
Quite dry, spicy turning bitter and smoky towards the end. Long enough.

  24. Kaltduscher scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Complex. Fruity and sour. Apples. Pears. Citrus fruits. Currants. Honey. Campfire smoke. Spices. Peppermint.
    • Taste
Sweet. Vanilla. Caramel. Creamy. Hazelnut brittle. Bananas. Milk chocolate. Fine smoke. Malt. Sour currants in the background. After a while, associations come to Trolli-Apfelringen.
    • Finish
Long. Honeydew melon. Creamy. Campfire smoke. Espresso. Dark chocolate. Apples.

    Tasting Notes and Comments by Benromach;

Pour yourself a dram...as the whisky slips into your glass, observe its rich ruby red colour imparted by oak casks that once matured wine from the Hermitage Appelation d'Orgine Contrôlée, in the northern Rhône region of France, famed for the Syrah grape. Lift your glass and take in the AROMA WITHOUT WATER. Swirl your dram around and enjoy those scents of summer... sweet summer fruits, refreshing red apples, and zesty lemon and lime. A touch of vanilla emerges and cinnamon notes develop, underlined by a touch of peat smoke and a peppermint edge. Now take a sip. The TASTE WITHOUT WATER is sweet and bursting with intense fruit... succulent dark cherry and orange, sharper kiwi and gooseberry... and these combine wonderfully with creamy milk chocolate and a gentle smoky edge. Now enjoy the AROMA WITH WATER...  nose your dram and you may detect lime and grapefruit at first, with hints of delicious toasted malt and sweet vanilla with eucalyptus notes in the background. Take a sip and savour the TASTE WITH WATER... at first it's gently spicy, quickly followed by sweet raspberry and tangerine flavours, and hints of almonds complementing the underlying peat smoke edge. The finish is gloriously long and fruity with a hint of smoke.

Our Hermitage wood finish is matured in first fill bourbon casks and is finished for 27 months in hand-selected casks from the Hermitage Appelation D'Orgine Contrôlée, in the northern Rhône region of France.
