SMWS Tasting Notes: Built by Dewar's in the 1890s, this distillery is now owned by Baccardi and has just been grandly refurbished with a state of the art visitor centre. Pale gold in colour, the nose is very sweet and gentle considering the whisky's strength. It's like Samson's riddle to the Philistines: 'out of the strong came forth sweetness'. Tasted neat, there is a concentrated fruitiness, like grilled pineapple or baked apple. When water is added, the fruit one can taste is tinned in syrup and the flavour develops into thick, buttery pastry with a spice. Perhaps apple pie with cinnamon? The aftertaste ends on a bitter note, like Samson captured by the Philistines at a blind tasting The overall experience, however, is balanced and enlightening.
